Stage 2 Report

Today the Baltic Chain tour moves to its second stop. A 162k sprint stage around a circuit in St. Petersburg. Today and for the rest of the tour the sprinters will take center stage. Two of them, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Saber and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Van Asbroeck produced strong rides yesterday and have an advantage over the rest in the GC and points competition.

The favorites are the sprinters

One thing we seem to be learning about the Baltic is it rains a lot. Today, in the rain, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aab.png Vichot, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Viviani, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Leknessund, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/taf.png Urianstad don’t mind, as they are all quickly on the attack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/BalticChain/S2/01.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/taf.png Urianstad is dropped by the other three and joined by 6 more attackers who are then all reeled in by Aramco and Trans leaving just the other 3 originals out front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/BalticChain/S2/02.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/taf.png Andersen embarks on a valiant solo effort to restore Tafjord to the break but a combination of chasing from the peloton and attacks from other riders result in his failure.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/BalticChain/S2/03.jpg

There are a few more unsuccessful attacks but with 138k to go the 3 front runners have a 2-minute lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/BalticChain/S2/04.jpg

But the attacks aren’t done, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/t3a.png Owen is able to pry open a small gap but Tafjord pick up the chase and with 120k to go he has just 22 seconds with the other 3 at 1’35.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/BalticChain/S2/05.jpg

Clearly Tafjord have decided if they can’t be in this break it shouldn’t exist. They don't have a sprinter so the breaks are important. They catch Owen and with 107k to go the lead is 40 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/BalticChain/S2/06.jpg

With 101k to go the threesome are caught, pausing just long enough to give his original companions the finger, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/taf.png Urianstad counter attacks.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/BalticChain/S2/07.jpg

He is the only new attacker and with 90k to go his lead is 2’48. Pity there aren’t any sprints on this course to make his efforts worthwhile.

Fast forwarding to 30k to go. Binance, Minions and Aramco doing the chasing. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/taf.png Urianstad’s lead, having peaked at 3 minutes, is now 47 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/BalticChain/S2/08.jpg

With 14k to go the solo adventure is over.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/BalticChain/S2/09.jpg

2k to go and the sprint trains are trying to form. On the left is Trans with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tlt.png Korosec, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tlt.png McEvoy, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tlt.png Selig and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aab.png Coutinho behind them. Moving to the right it is Aramco with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/adp.png Sureda, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/adp.png Thomas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/adp.png Ovsyannikov, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/adp.png Jakobsen. A little behind them are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ino.png Yudha with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ino.png Howard on his wheel. Further to the right is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Noppe with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Kennaugh on his wheel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Halvorsen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ccc.png Krieger. The next set of riders are domestiques and the on the far right is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Hodeg with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Vesely and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/brs.png Silvestre behind him. The rest of the potential sprinters sitting this one out.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/BalticChain/S2/10.jpg

1.4k to go, the Trans train on the right and the Minions train on the left have a slight lead over the Aramco train in the middle. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Van Asbroeck and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gla.png Meyer at the bottom of the picture are coming late to the game.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/BalticChain/S2/11.jpg

Under the 1k banner the 3 trains have opened up a small lead with only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aab.png Coutinho and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/brs.png Silvestre able to stay on terms outside those 3 teams. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Kennaugh leading most of the rest in the middle.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/BalticChain/S2/12.jpg

600 meters and all of the front runners have started the sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Vesely in front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/BalticChain/S2/13.jpg

300 meters pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tlt.png Selig and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/brs.png Silvestre overhauling pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Vesely.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/BalticChain/S2/14.jpg

100 meters and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aab.png Coutinho is now in front. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Kennaugh is making up ground in the middle but may be too late.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/BalticChain/S2/15.jpg

Stage 2 goes to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aab.png Coutinho ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/brs.png Silvestre.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/BalticChain/S2/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Kennaugh snatches 3rd ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Halvorsen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ccc.png Krieger, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tlt.png Selig and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ino.png Howard.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/BalticChain/S2/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Vesely and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/adp.png Jakobsen complete the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/brs.png Silvestre now leads the GC. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Saber holds on to the points lead. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Halvorsen leads the young rider competition and Cedevita still leads in the teams competition.
