Baltic Chain Tour

Stage 1 Report

The Baltic Chain tour starts its circuit of the Baltic Sea in Estonia. Stage 1 is a 3k prologue in Tallinn. The Estonians have punished the riders for only spending 3k of a roughly 750km race in Estonia by making them ride large parts of the course on cobbles.

Nevertheless, the leaderboard is dominated by the TT riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/BalticChain/S1/favs.jpg

6th man on the course is one of the top time-trialists, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Viviani. Bu he loses 11 seconds to the current leader, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Zepuntke (one of the top cobblers) in the opening 700 meters of cobbles and finishes 14 seconds behind. Like last year cobbles are going to matter.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/BalticChain/S1/01.jpg

Soon after pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Räim, who is a solid cobbler and prologue rider sets the new best time 1 second ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Zepuntke. A blend of skills is needed.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/t3a.png Matthews fits that profile and is a former winner of the stage. He takes the lead by fractions.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/BalticChain/S1/02.jpg

Next similar rider is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Sweeck. But he only manages 3rd, 3 seconds off.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/BalticChain/S1/03.jpg

But the cameraman is having trouble figuring out which riders to follow as he misses pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ccc.png Beka Nareklishvili matching the best time (4’28) although 3rd on the fractions. We will have another Nareklishvili, Giorgi, later.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/adp.png Thomas is a TT rider who isn’t good on the cobbles but he manages to minimize his losses on that surface and finishes just 1 second behind, good enough for 4th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/BalticChain/S1/04.jpg

Podium Ambition has the lead and in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/t3a.png Edmondson they have another rider with a nice balance of skills. But he is unable to overcome a poor opening cobbles sector and finishes in 7th, 3 seconds behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/BalticChain/S1/05.jpg

The other pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Nareklishvili doesn’t have a great time at the first check, but he does have a very cool NC jersey. He finishes 11 seconds off the pace.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/BalticChain/S1/06.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Lindeman is more of a pure cobbler and he rocks the first 700 meters just 1 second behind the best time which was set by his teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Zepuntke. But his prologue skills aren’t good enough and he finishes 8 seconds behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/BalticChain/S1/07.jpg

The next cobbler, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Fenn, sets the best interim time. But his other skills aren’t good enough either, he finishes 4 seconds behind in 11.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/BalticChain/S1/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/t3a.png Cataford is one of the TT riders with solid cobbles skills. He got his jersey very dirty in the first 700 meters but is only 2 seconds off the pace at the check.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/BalticChain/S1/09.jpg

But he can’t make it up on the rest of the course, 7th, 2 seconds behind for him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ino.png Gani had the same deficit at the time check but he manages to make it up. He is the 4th rider on 4’28, currently showing 2nd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/BalticChain/S1/10.jpg

But right after him pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Bush becomes the first of the cobblers to overcome his poor TT skills. He is the new leader on 4’27. The weather has improved so that might be helping.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/BalticChain/S1/11.jpg

The next big cobbler to ride is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/t3a.png Altur, he sets the new best time at the intermediate and the finish. He is ahead of Bush on milliseconds. Podium Ambition have 1st and 3rd right now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/BalticChain/S1/12.jpg

Most teams have saved their sprinters for last. One of the sprinters with the best skills for this stage is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Van Asbroeck. He is 3 seconds down after the cobbled section but nails the second half to tie the top time and take the top spot on the leaderboard.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/BalticChain/S1/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Saber is better on the cobbles than Van Asbroeck worse in the prologues. He has the best time at the intermediate.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/BalticChain/S1/14.jpg

And he drops the best time by 5 seconds. A huge ride for the Moroccan.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Kennaugh is the last man on the course but he isn’t here for this stage, he loses 23 seconds. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Saber is the stage winner.

The final judges decision move pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Van Asbroeck down to 4th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Bush up to 2nd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/t3a.png Altur stays in 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ccc.png Beka Nareklishvili leads the young rider competition. Cedevita takes the team lead, given all the rest of the stages are likely to result in sprints, they should be able to hold that jersey.
