Giro d'Italia - Stage 4

Stage Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/profile.jpg

Stage 4 is another hilly rated stage. Not long at 144 km and not too bumpy, but it should be more suited to the breakaway with a category 2 climb that will likely decide the next KOM leader. After that a long descent and a short climb to the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/PCM0001.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Jang is the first rider that manages to get away from the peloton and as of now nobody else is able to join him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/PCM0002.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Cabrera and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Kastrantas try, but the peloton is not having it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/PCM0003.jpg

More unsuccessful attacks follow and the rampant pace eventually brings pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Jang back into the pack. But Festina really want to be in the breakaway today, so it's now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Kastrantas with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Smit up the road.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/PCM0004.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Sulvaran bridges across and actually beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Kastrantas to the intermediate sprint, but the peloton is lurking close by still.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/PCM0005.jpg

Could it be that the peloton wanted these sprint points? Well pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Scully, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Yates and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi pick up what was left. Will things calm down now?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/PCM0006.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Fouche makes a solo effort to make it to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Kastrantas who couldn't hold pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Sulvaran's wheel. But these two only have a minute ahead of the peloton and are still 40 km from the KOM. This just isn't the breakaway's day it seems.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/PCM0007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Sulvaran continued on his own, but even he is now caught well before the climb really begins.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/PCM0008.jpg

Gazelle and Mapei are targeting this stage and setting the pace. As a result pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Peters, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Konrad, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Neuman and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Lemus Davila taking the KOM points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Peters is therefore the new KOM leader.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/PCM0009.jpg

Everyone takes it relatively easy on the descent and are now ready to tackle the last 2 km uphill. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Yates is at the very front, flanked by fellow puncheurs pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Buchmann and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Izagirre. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Herklotz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Meintjes and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Areruya are behind them. The 3rd row so to speak then has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Morton, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Kudus and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Barguil.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/PCM0010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Yates picks this up early, but unlike yesterday he can't create a gap. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Buchmann is right on his wheel and everyone else as well. It's going to be a bunch uphill sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/PCM0011.jpg

Mapei have a lot of riders in great position, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Buchmann on the left is now moving backwards. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Izagirre still looking good on the right side of the road.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/PCM0012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Yates is still looking strong with less than 300 m to go. He has a surprising pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Groselj alongside him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Areruya behind and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Guldhammer is making his move on the right.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/PCM0013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Simon Yates knew exactly what he was doing! He holds off pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Areruya to win his 2nd stage of this Giro. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Buchmann in the end just denies his countryman pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Herklotz for the final podium spot.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Barguil is 5th in what was a strong team showing from Mapei. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Guldhammer 6th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Meintjes 7th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Sicard 8th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Dombrowski 9th and rounding out the top 10 is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Izagirre.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/PCM0014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Yates's 2nd stage victory brings him level with Kemboi, but he will wear the maglia rosa tomorrow due to better results in all 4 stages. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi though still holds the points lead and will wear the ciclamino tomorrow. By winning today's stage which had the final uphill as a cat. 3 climb pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Yates actually leads or is tied with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Peters, who will get to wear the jersey. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Areruya remains in white.
