Stage 1 Report

The Tour of California starts with a flat 8.4k TT in Los Angeles. Some of the greatest riders in mangame history have won this race, names like Phinney, Herklotz and Pluchkin. Who will walk in their footsteps?

The organizers think the first stage is too long for the pure prologue guys so it is the TT riders who dominate the favorites list:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C2/California/S1/favs.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/t3a.png Redy shows off the Podium Ambition jersey as the first rider off the start ramp.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C2/California/S1/01.jpg

The first rider with a significant time is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/taf.png Pavlic, his time of 9’22 is enough for a 37-second lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C2/California/S1/02.jpg

The first of the favorites on the course is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mck.png Van Winden. With its drop to C2 US-focused McCormick are making their debut in the race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C2/California/S1/03.jpg

Van Winden won’t be delivering any glory, he is 22 seconds behind the leader. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hlf.png Vingerling crosses next he is 28 seconds down (3rd), he is more of a prologue rider so they will at least be competitive. Then comes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ccc.png Vandousselaere, a solid allrounder, who is the new 2nd, just 2 seconds off the pace, Pavlic clearly put up a great time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pns.png Ratiy is the first of the top GC riders through and he was 26 seconds behind, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gla.png Martin loses 48 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hlf.png Stash is among the best of the pure prologue riders. He finishes 23 seconds behind, in 4th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C2/California/S1/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Ligthart does slightly better, taking 3rd, 17 seconds back. Pavlic’s time is looking better and better.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/vlf.png Herrada does better, he is 7 seconds off the lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C2/California/S1/05.jpg

The first of Glanbia’s challengers is next: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gla.png Downey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C2/California/S1/06.jpg

He takes 4th, 11 seconds behind. McCormick’s other hope, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mck.png Keough, is the best of the pure prologue riders but he weakens a lot as the distances increases. He only manages 10th, 24 seconds behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C2/California/S1/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Haga is the kind of rider who has been doing well so far, balanced TT skills and some climbing ability (the course is mostly uphill although the grades are very minor).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C2/California/S1/08.jpg

He finishes in 6th, 21 seconds behind, best time so far by a GC focused rider.

The 2nd head of the Glanbia 3-hedaed challenge is: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gla.png Cruz.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C2/California/S1/09.jpg

But he also falls short, 5th place 13 seconds behind.

Tafjord is enjoying a great day from Pavlic, their other GC threat, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/taf.png Henao finishes 1’25 behind his teammate.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/adp.png Borisavljevic is the next GC rider on the course, he finishes 41 seconds behind. Not a great time for him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C2/California/S1/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/vlf.png Amador is one of the top favorites for a GC win. He loses 29 seconds. That is a very solid result.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C2/California/S1/11.jpg

BWT’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bwt.png Barta is a favorite for the Young Rider competition. He finishes in 6th, just 17 seconds off the pace, which is the new best time by a GC-focused rider (other than Pavlic, who is also a GC outsider). He also puts 30-seconds into his American rival pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mck.png McNulty.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C2/California/S1/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hlf.png Diaz does even better, just 14 seconds off the pace.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C2/California/S1/13.jpg

The times are suddenly improving, does that bode well for overall favorite pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ccc.png Campenaerts, who is now on the course?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C2/California/S1/14.jpg

He can’t do it. 14 seconds off the pace as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pns.png Aru, another GC rider, but weaker TTer loses a respectable 44 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Cheyne gets the best time in a long time, 10 seconds off the lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C2/California/S1/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/vlf.png Brenes puts up a respectable time, 42 seconds off the pace.

Glanbia’s third and last hope for the stage win, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gla.png Craddock, is the next rider on the course.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C2/California/S1/16.jpg

He is 3 seconds behind, the best time in a long while, but not good enough to displace the top two of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/taf.png Pavlic and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ccc.png Vandousselaere. He is in 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/adp.png Mas loses 42 seconds, putting him safely among most of his GC rivals.

Perhaps fearing changes in the weather (it has been raining for all the recent riders), most of the last round of riders are not threats for the GC or the stage. So, the last significant rider on the course is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hlf.png Elissonde. He isn’t a threat for the stage win but will want to minimize his GC losses.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C2/California/S1/17.jpg

He loses 1’22, good for 89th, he will have some ground to make up.

A huge upset in stage 1 of the Tour of California as one of the first riders off the ramp, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/taf.png Pavlic, holds on to the hot seat for the rest of the day. Tafjord are in rebuilding mode and more focused on development than results but they will certainly welcome today’s unexpected victory.

Pavlic also gets the points jersey. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bwt.png Barta leads the young rider competition while Glanbia’s consolation is 3 in the top 10 and the team jersey ahead of Minions.
