Stage 6 Report

The final stage of the Tour of Eritrea is for the punchy riders. The climbers will need to fight to hold their GC positions. 180km in total with 5 cat 3’s and a cat 2 and a Cat 3 at the finish, so the KOM jersey will be up for grabs.

The stage favorites are the top hill riders:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S6/favs.jpg

10km gone, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tlt.png Krasnoperov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Seibeb out front. A very pink chase as BNZ and BWT Hyundai seem to want to get their riders into the breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S6/01.jpg

27km gone, and there are 4 more attackers: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Henao Montoya, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Campero, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bns.png Schleck and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Schmid. BNZ represented but BWT is not. They have 21 seconds on the peloton and they need to make up 59 seconds on the front two.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S6/02.jpg

Unsurprisingly pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bwt.png Robov is the next attacker as BWT makes their move. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Chhetri has also been trying to get away, no doubt to contest for the KOM, but he has been stymied so far.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S6/03.jpg

1k to the top of the KOM. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Seibeb has dropped pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tlt.png Krasnoperov who is all the way back in the third group with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bwt.png Robov. Seibeb has 22 seconds over the 4 chasers.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S6/04.jpg

But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Seibeb had already spent a lot of energy and by the top he has been caught and passed. Points go to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Campero (6), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Henao Montoya (4), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Schmid (2).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S6/05.jpg

Schmid is now 1 point off the Virtual KOM lead, there is another Cat 3 in just 11k but there are also a lot of riders trying to bridge across to the front.

The Swiss rider drives the pace but can’t stop many other from joining the front. With 138k to ride and 5k to the next KOM there is an 11 rider group 4’21 clear of the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Seibeb and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tlt.png Krasnoperov are able to rejoin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bwt.png Robov also makes it across. They are joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/brs.png Ndayisenga, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Kennaugh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bwt.png Sakalou, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Bizkarra. None of those are particularly close in the KOM competition (Bizkarra has 14 points in 9th) but worryingly for Schmid, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Chhetri (3rd in KOM) is just 53 seconds behind them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S6/06.jpg

700 meters to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bns.png Schleck ramps up the pace. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Schmid is in fourth wheel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Chhetri has reached the group but is right at the back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S6/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Schmid leaves it too late and doesn’t take any points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Bizkarra takes the maximum putting him on 20 points, just 12 points off the lead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/adp.png Fernandez.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S6/08.jpg

Over 50k until the next KOM and the resumption of that competition. The lead is just about 5 minutes.

100k to go for the peloton, the lead is down to 3’18. Carsberg, Aramco, Lierse and Phillips have been working. 1 rider, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Rowe, has been dropped. The riders are being blessed with some rains down in Africa.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S6/09.jpg

Movign forward to the next KOM, with 80k to ride.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Schmid 2nd wheel this time as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Kennaugh launches an attack 700 meters from the top. The peloton is at 2’16.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S6/10.jpg

It was neck-and-neck at the top but judges give it to Kennaugh. 2nd is enough for Schmid to take the lead with 35 points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Bizkarra takes third and is on 22 points. Still a maximum of 22 points to be scored.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S6/11.jpg

66k to go, 1.4 k to the top of the Cat 2. This time pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Chhetri is best positioned of the KOM hunters. The peloton is at 2’23. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tlt.png Krasnoperov has been dropped from the break for the 3rd or 4th time, seems unlikely he will make it back this time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S6/12.jpg

500 meters and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Schmid has been distanced. He is going to have to rely on the kindness of strangers to keep his KOM lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S6/13.jpg

As they near the top pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Chhetri is in 4th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Bizkarra out of the points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S6/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Seibeb takes maximum points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Chhetri hangs on for 4th giving him 32 points, tied with Fernandez 3 behind Schmid. BIzkarra doesn’t score. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bns.png Schleck and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bwt.png Sakalou are both also dropped.

52k to go as the remaining 8 breakaway riders pass the 2nd sprint. The peloton is at 2’24 and all the dropped breakaway riders have been caught. The peloton has been splitting and reforming. 23rd place pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gct.png Salinas is the most prominent rider who has been permanently dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S6/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Chhetri launches the first attack at the next Cat 3.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S6/16.jpg

And he holds off pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/brs.png Ndayisenga to take maximum points and the KOM lead. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Bizkarra doesn’t score which means the Nepalese champion will be the King of the Mountains at the 2021 Tour of Eritrea.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S6/17.jpg

40k to go for the peloton which is now 76 riders. They trail by 2’01. Carlsberg and Los Pollos Hermanos on the front. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Seibeb and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Campero were dropped from the break on the last hill and are struggling to rejoin.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S6/18.jpg

30k to go for the break, lead is holding steady at about 2 minutes with many of the chasers looking tired. This could still go either way. The two dropped riders aren’t going to make it back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S6/19.jpg

The last KOM goes to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/brs.png Ndayisenga, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Bizkarra scores 4 points moving him into 4th place. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Kennaugh is dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S6/20.jpg

The peloton can’t agree on who should work and the lead has gone to 2’36. Kraftwerk would be happy for the break to take the bonus seconds.

13k to go for the peloton. Attacks from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Carthy and
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/adp.png Mas energized things and now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse on the front and the lead is down to 1’48.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S6/21.jpg

7k for the 5 surviving breakaway riders. They have this short ramp, a downhill, and the climb to the finish. 76-rider peloton at 1’12. It is going to be close. Aramco working in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S6/22.jpg

Over the top pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Henao Montoya, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bwt.png Robov, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/brs.png Ndayisenga get a gap on the other two. 5.4k to ride.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S6/23.jpg

The breakaway has reached the bottom of the final 3k climb. The two dropped riders were able to come back. The peloton at 1’17.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S6/24.jpg

1.4k to go for the break. The peloton is at 56 seconds. Nobody has committed in either group yet.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S6/25.jpg

1k to go. That gap is down to 38 seconds. Still no attacks. Best placed among the GC riders are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Padun, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Penasa, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/adp.png Mas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/brs.png Eyob and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kmm.png Arndt. Too hard for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Van Stayen today, he is well back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S6/26.jpg

600 meters, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/brs.png Ndayisenga grinding away on the front. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bwt.png Robov tried to accelerate but had nothing. The peloton almost to them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S6/27.jpg

400 meters for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/brs.png Ndayisenga. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Chhetri is swamped by the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Raileanu is the Phillips rider to his left. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Liphongyu is the Sauber rider to his right. The other two in the front row are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Padun and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kmm.png Arndt.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S6/28.jpg

200 meters, it looks like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/brs.png Ndayisenga is going to hang on. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lpu.png Novak is moving fast towards the right.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S6/29.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/brs.png Ndayisenga is going to take the stage. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Bizkarra looks good for 2nd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kmm.png Arndt tearing up the hill on the lefthand side. The peloton has split further back but all the top GC guys in the first 30.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S6/30.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kmm.png Arndt takes 3rd and secures the overall GC. He also takes enough points to win that competition. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lpu.png Novak 4th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S6/31.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Padun 5th, he wins White. Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Raileanu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Alarcon, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Penasa, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Frankiny and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Liphongyu complete the top 10.

The team jersey stays with Assa Abloy.
