Stage 3 Report

Stage 3 of the Tour of Eritrea is the mountain stage. Riders will need a good performance today if they want to win the overall. Although they will still need to perform on the hilly stages (4 and 6). Today’s stage is 185k finishing in the long climb to Asmara. The finish carries 16 KOM points and there are 2 cat 2’s and two cat 3’s before then.

The big climbers show up as the favorites. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Alarcon will want to gain time today as the remaining stages don’t suit him as well.

30k gone and the break of the day seems settled with 17 riders. They lead by 2’05. Riders include:

2k to the top of the first Cat 2 and the first attack is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/adp.png Fernandez and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Bizkarra.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S3/02.jpg

And they stay away to take the first two spots.

At the first Cat 3, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Schmid leads a Jura sweep of the points. 5 riders dropped, they may be able to catch up on the downhill. The peloton is at 4’30, the lead peaked at about 5’30.

1.2k and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Schmid launches on the next Cat 2. His teammates behind him. 105k to go the peloton is at 3’20, a handful more riders dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S3/05.jpg

The young Swiss rider really feeling it today, he drags the whole group up the mountain and takes first again.

Schmid can’t do it again on the second Cat 3.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/adp.png Fernandez 6 (16) edges pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Bizkarra 4 (20).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Schmid grabs the last 2 points taking him to 29. There are 16 points at the finish but Bizkarra or Fernandez would have to win the stage for him to lose his lead today.

That is the last climb before the finish but after the descent it is one long gradual climb for the rest of the stage. There are 84k to go and the peloton is at 5’38. The break split on the last climb and there are just 6 riders left in the front group. The positions are shown below:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S3/sit1.jpg

The peloton down to 113 riders. Most notable dropped rider is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tlt.png Krasnoperov. The Yellow Jersey hanging on for now.

75k to go, the break is back to 13 riders. The lead is 6’24. Riders not rejoining yet are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aab.png Zukowsky, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bns.png Le Roux, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bns.png Muhindo, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bns.png Schleck.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S3/09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Schmid doesn’t like to lose but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/brs.png Tesfatsion beats him out at the lone sprint point. In the last 20k the peloton has closed the lead to 2’47. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bns.png Schleck is back in the front group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S3/10.jpg

50k for the peloton and the lead is down to 2’14. Cedevita, Aramco, cycleYorkshire, Popo, Los Pollos and Phillips working. The remaining dropped riders from the break are back in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S3/11.jpg

30k to go for the peloton, now 68 riders including the Yellow Jersey. The break has 1’20, a few attacks but nothing has stuck. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Gautier, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Saggiorato, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tlt.png Pibernik have been dropped by the breakaway. 11 left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S3/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Afewerki honored the jersey in his home tour but with 27k to go his time in yellow is over.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S3/13.jpg

With most of the break almost caught pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Alarcon and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lpu.png Novak attack. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Henttala leads the chase for Phillips. Up the road pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Bizkarra and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tlt.png Iino have opened up a 48 second lead. Alarcon has almost caught the rest.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S3/14.jpg

25k to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Kennaugh closes down the GC attacks and the remnants of the break. Just the two out front now, they have 1 minute.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S3/15.jpg

15k to go about the same, the front two lead by 54 seconds but it never went much above a minute and the peloton has them well under control. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Seibeb and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Kennaugh doing the bulk of the chasing. 52 riders still in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S3/16.jpg

Just as they catch the front two, with 12.7k to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Padun attacks.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S3/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Guldhammer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Penasa, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Garby, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/adp.png Mas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Rodrigues try to follow but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Kennaugh shuts them down and sets off after Padun.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S3/18.jpg

10k to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Padun has a small gap. Peloton down to 27.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S3/19.jpg

8k to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Henao Montoya is the first of the favorites to show weakness. Padun has opened his lead to 19 seconds. GC riders at the front now as most of the domestiques are gone.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S3/20.jpg

The main chase groups splits. 9 riders left, they are:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Alarcon
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Guldhammer
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Carthy
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lph.png Spilak
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Penasa
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Garby
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kmm.png Arndt
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lpu.png Novak
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Pomoshnikov
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Padun has 14 seconds over that group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S3/21.jpg

6.3k to go and they close down Padun. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Alarcon attacks. The others all respond but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Guldhammer is struggling.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S3/22.jpg

6.0k, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Penasa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Guldhammer crack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S3/23.jpg

5k banner. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Carthy on the front. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Garby has been dropped and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lpu.png Novak and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Pomoshnikov are in trouble.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S3/24.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lpu.png Novak recovers briefly but then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lph.png Spilak attacks and he is unable to hold on. 5 left up front: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Alarcon, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Carthy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lph.png Spilak, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kmm.png Arndt, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Padun.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S3/25.jpg

Full situation:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S3/sit2.jpg

Then a surprise as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lph.png Spilak’s attack dislodges two of the favorites, first pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Carthy and then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Alarcon. 3.5k to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S3/26.jpg

2k to go, not much change. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Alarcon has been able to hang on to the front group. They are all on the limit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S3/27.jpg

1k banner, it is going to be a slow motion sprint. Pretty much status quo at the front but the time gaps growing behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S3/28.jpg

400 meters to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kmm.png Arndt is the quickest in the group by some margin and has kept his powder dry the whole climb. He opens the sprint and gets a gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S3/29.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kmm.png Arndt wins stage 3 with a 23 second gap over the next 3. He takes the GC lead by 31 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S3/30.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Padun, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Alarcon, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lph.png Spilak are the next 3. The Ukrainian opens a big lead in the best young rider competition.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S3/31.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Carthy (+1.08), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lpu.png Novak (+1,42), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Pomoshnikov (+2’07), and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Garby (3’07) come across solo in 5th through 8th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S3/32.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/brs.png Eyob just beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Masnada for 9th (both 3’32) Those two passed pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Penasa (+4’00) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Guldhammer (+4’21). Not a good day for Phillips or Carlsberg.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Eritrea/S3/33.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Afewerki holds on to the points jersey. Cedevita lead Bralirwa by 9 seconds in the team competition.
