Ronde Van Nederland

Stage 1
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/P.jpg

Stage one of the Ronde van Nederland is a flat one on paper, but don’t be fooled: The final kilometer features some pretty steep sections with only a very brief flat stretch close to the finish, so quick puncheurs have a shot here as well. There are a lot of bonus seconds available on all three stages in this race, 25 for the winner down to 1 for 10th place, something to keep in mind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/01.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Erdenesuren and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Culey are the first attackers of the day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/02.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Resell and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Mudgway try a bit later, but Festina’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Vila shuts that move down quickly.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/03.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Generali then establishes a big presence at the front of the peloton. They have no strong contender for any stage here, is this their way of getting some TV time? Or are they hoping to bring the original duo back to start an attack themselves? They keep the gap at 1’30 for the moment.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/04.jpg

It’s a tight race for the first mountain points, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Culey comes out on top. The two haven’t worked all that well together and weren’t able to get a meaningful lead on the peloton so far.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Nikiema attacks from the peloton to take the remaining 2 points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Christensen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Debesay both tried to get away, too, but again it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Vila who chases all three of them down. The pack, and Festina in particular, seems to be set on allowing just two riders ahead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/06.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Culey takes the second mountain sprint as well. They have three minutes on the peloton now, where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Restrepo takes 2 points simply by riding at the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Culey is simply the better puncheur, he makes it three for three a few kilometers later, now even distancing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Erdenesuren for a bit. 2 points to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Vila at the front of the peloton, which is now 5 minutes behind the leaders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/09.jpg

Alongside Festina for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Coquard, we have Isostar riding for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Gaviria (or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Lutsenko?), Evonik for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Eislers and ISA likely for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb. They seem to be confident that their pure sprinters can handle the finale.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/10.jpg

Missed by the cameras, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Erdenesuren finally gets the better of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Culey at the intermediate sprint. However, this one is maybe more interesting: There was still 1 point (and bonus second) available for the peloton, which pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Eislers takes ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Coquard.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Culey might be running out of energy after all, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Erdenesuren takes the final KoM sprint of the day. Still, the 22 points the Australian collected today mean that he can only be toppled by his companion tomorrow, where there are just 3 KoM sprints available.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/13.jpg

A few kilometres later, they get to the first of five crossings of the climb to the finish and we get a first impression of how steep those slopes really are. For the most part, they range between 6 and 8%, but there’s a small section that goes up to 13%!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/14.jpg

At the third crossing, and with the peloton in sight, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Culey attacks to cement his claim to the most combative rider of the day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/16.jpg

This prolongs his time in the spotlight a little, but almost exactly one lap later, it’s over for him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Isostar and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Festina are still the driving forces in the pack, and they now have some 13 kilometers to set up the finale as they wish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/17.jpg

And here’s what they came up with 3 kilometres from the finish. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Gaviria is already very close to the front with just pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Per ahead of him. He’s followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Grosu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke.

Two more clean trains emerge. On their right, it’s ISA with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Baska and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Santos for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Sagan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Petit and, slightly boxed in, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Eislers and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov.

On the left, it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Koretzky and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Farantakis for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Coquard, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Kasperkiewicz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Hagen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Vesely. A bunch of puncheurs are in that vicinity as well, including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Lutsenko, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Mohoric, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png De Bie, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Vakoc, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png McCarthy and French Champion pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Demare.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/18.jpg

Those three trains execute well and clearly lead with 2 kilometers to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Petit, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Vesely and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Eislers have latched onto pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke, everyone else is a bit behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/19.jpg

The leadouts leave their captains in the wind with some 800 meters to go, but now is where the steep parts begin, so it’s a very long 800 meters. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb on the right is furthest ahead, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Gaviria, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Grosu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke, who’s best suited for this finish, following closely.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/20.jpg

Behind them, the puncheurs and some other sprinters make their way to the front, trying to catch up. In that first line, we have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Lutsenko, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Waeytens and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Sagan, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png De Bie and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Demare is very fast on the bottom left, but he’s got a lot of road to make up, as do pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Enger and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Swift to his right.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/21.jpg

The leaders are in the steepest parts now and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb is already heavily struggling. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Vesely and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Eislers on the left are currently the fastest, but the puncheurs come closer quickly.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/22.jpg

300 meters! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Gaviria and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Eislers try to hold on, but the puncheurs attack. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Sagan comes with great speed in the middle of the road!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/23.jpg

He takes the lead and looks set for the stage win, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke makes his move now on the right and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Demare has one final push in him on the left as well!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/24.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Sagan celebrates, he wins stage 1 of the Ronde van Nederland! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke is second, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Eislers holds on for a very strong third place.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/25.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Demare ends up in 4th place. This finish was taylor-made for him, but he messed up the positioning coming into the final kilometer. Still, he holds all the cards with two more stages that suit him well. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Gaviria also sets himself up well with a 5th place here and rewards his team’s efforts. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Vesely with a surprisingly strong 6th place ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Coquard. A good effort by Festina on a finish that didn’t suit their leader perfectly, but by getting ahead as far as they did, he was able to hang on.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/26.jpg

At the very last second, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png De Bie outsprints pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Petit to finish as the third best puncheur (if you include pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Demare in that list) in 8th place. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Gidich beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Grosu to take the final bonus second and the white jersey with it. Defending champion pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb only manages 13th place, he’ll have to have a top finish tomorrow to come even close to a repeat.
