Ronde Van Nederland
--
Stage 1
Stage one of the Ronde van Nederland is a flat one on paper, but don’t be fooled: The final kilometer features some pretty steep sections with only a very brief flat stretch close to the finish, so quick puncheurs have a shot here as well. There are a lot of bonus seconds available on all three stages in this race, 25 for the winner down to 1 for 10th place, something to keep in mind.
Erdenesuren and Culey are the first attackers of the day.
Resell and Mudgway try a bit later, but Festina’s Vila shuts that move down quickly.
Generali then establishes a big presence at the front of the peloton. They have no strong contender for any stage here, is this their way of getting some TV time? Or are they hoping to bring the original duo back to start an attack themselves? They keep the gap at 1’30 for the moment.
It’s a tight race for the first mountain points, Culey comes out on top. The two haven’t worked all that well together and weren’t able to get a meaningful lead on the peloton so far.
Nikiema attacks from the peloton to take the remaining 2 points. Christensen and Debesay both tried to get away, too, but again it’s Vila who chases all three of them down. The pack, and Festina in particular, seems to be set on allowing just two riders ahead.
Culey takes the second mountain sprint as well. They have three minutes on the peloton now, where Restrepo takes 2 points simply by riding at the front.
Culey is simply the better puncheur, he makes it three for three a few kilometers later, now even distancing Erdenesuren for a bit. 2 points to Vila at the front of the peloton, which is now 5 minutes behind the leaders.
Alongside Festina for Coquard, we have Isostar riding for Gaviria (or Lutsenko?), Evonik for Eislers and ISA likely for Degenkolb. They seem to be confident that their pure sprinters can handle the finale.
Missed by the cameras, Erdenesuren finally gets the better of Culey at the intermediate sprint. However, this one is maybe more interesting: There was still 1 point (and bonus second) available for the peloton, which Eislers takes ahead of Degenkolb and Coquard.
Culey might be running out of energy after all, as Erdenesuren takes the final KoM sprint of the day. Still, the 22 points the Australian collected today mean that he can only be toppled by his companion tomorrow, where there are just 3 KoM sprints available.
A few kilometres later, they get to the first of five crossings of the climb to the finish and we get a first impression of how steep those slopes really are. For the most part, they range between 6 and 8%, but there’s a small section that goes up to 13%!
At the third crossing, and with the peloton in sight, Culey attacks to cement his claim to the most combative rider of the day.
This prolongs his time in the spotlight a little, but almost exactly one lap later, it’s over for him. Isostar and Festina are still the driving forces in the pack, and they now have some 13 kilometers to set up the finale as they wish.
And here’s what they came up with 3 kilometres from the finish. Gaviria is already very close to the front with just Per ahead of him. He’s followed by Grosu and Van der Lijke.
Two more clean trains emerge. On their right, it’s ISA with Baska and Santos for Degenkolb, followed by Sagan, Petit and, slightly boxed in, Eislers and Samolenkov.
On the left, it’s Koretzky and Farantakis for Coquard, followed by Kasperkiewicz, Hagen and Vesely. A bunch of puncheurs are in that vicinity as well, including Lutsenko, Mohoric, De Bie, Vakoc, McCarthy and French Champion Demare.
Those three trains execute well and clearly lead with 2 kilometers to go. Petit, Vesely and Eislers have latched onto Van der Lijke, everyone else is a bit behind.
The leadouts leave their captains in the wind with some 800 meters to go, but now is where the steep parts begin, so it’s a very long 800 meters. Degenkolb on the right is furthest ahead, with Gaviria, Grosu and Van der Lijke, who’s best suited for this finish, following closely.
Behind them, the puncheurs and some other sprinters make their way to the front, trying to catch up. In that first line, we have Lutsenko, Waeytens and Sagan, followed by De Bie and Kemboi. Demare is very fast on the bottom left, but he’s got a lot of road to make up, as do Enger and Swift to his right.
The leaders are in the steepest parts now and Degenkolb is already heavily struggling. Vesely and Eislers on the left are currently the fastest, but the puncheurs come closer quickly.
300 meters! Gaviria and Eislers try to hold on, but the puncheurs attack. Sagan comes with great speed in the middle of the road!
He takes the lead and looks set for the stage win, but Van der Lijke makes his move now on the right and Demare has one final push in him on the left as well!
Sagan celebrates, he wins stage 1 of the Ronde van Nederland! Van der Lijke is second, Eislers holds on for a very strong third place.
Demare ends up in 4th place. This finish was taylor-made for him, but he messed up the positioning coming into the final kilometer. Still, he holds all the cards with two more stages that suit him well. Gaviria also sets himself up well with a 5th place here and rewards his team’s efforts. Vesely with a surprisingly strong 6th place ahead of Coquard. A good effort by Festina on a finish that didn’t suit their leader perfectly, but by getting ahead as far as they did, he was able to hang on.
At the very last second, De Bie outsprints Petit to finish as the third best puncheur (if you include Demare in that list) in 8th place. Gidich beats Kemboi and Grosu to take the final bonus second and the white jersey with it. Defending champion Degenkolb only manages 13th place, he’ll have to have a top finish tomorrow to come even close to a repeat.
