Tour of Southland - Stage 4

Stage Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Southland/S4/profile.jpg

Stage 4 is usually the big GC decider. 136 km today so another short stage with a small category 4 bump right before the final climb to the finish. The Crown Range climb is 3.9 km long (avg 5.9%, max 12.3%) and rated as category 2.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Southland/S4/PCM0001.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gla.png Martin who isn't a GC factor attacks first, followed by two familiar names in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/adp.png Castrillo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bwt.png Kochetkov.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Southland/S4/PCM0002.jpg

We have constant attacks from riders trying to join the breakaway, but for now the peloton is not allowing anyone else to go up the road.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Southland/S4/PCM0003.jpg

Two riders finally managed to time the counter attack to get away. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tlt.png Pibernik and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/vlf.png Mudarra make it 5 riders in the breakaway, but given the high pace so far they only have a small gap over the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Southland/S4/PCM0004.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/adp.png Noia and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lph.png Ruiz are two other riders now trying to bridge across to the front of the race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Southland/S4/PCM0005.jpg

They are unsuccessful though and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gla.png Martin also couldn't keep up with the high pace on the flat and is back in the pack now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Southland/S4/PCM0006.jpg

We've seen pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gla.png Haas do this before and he's doing it again. A late move to get in the breakaway as he's caught up with a struggling pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bwt.png Kochetkov.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Southland/S4/PCM0007.jpg

One more move now that looks like the peloton are allowing with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Tediashvili going away solo also.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Southland/S4/PCM0008.jpg

Just about 50 km into the race we now have a group of 5 riders in front with 2'21'' over the peloton and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bwt.png Kochetkov in no man's land in between. The young Kazakh would never catch up and would eventually drop back into the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Southland/S4/PCM0009.jpg

We rejoin the race 35 km from the finish at the intermediate sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/adp.png Castrillo has been contesting these all race long and wins this one as well. The 5 riders' advantage is just over 1 minute now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Southland/S4/PCM0010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gla.png Haas's strategy had to be to win the category 4 KOM before the last climb, but the breakaway gets caught sooner, 13 km to go now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Southland/S4/PCM0011.jpg

The KOM points go to the pace setters as we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Zalgiris, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Duolingo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mck.png McCormick at the front of the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Southland/S4/PCM0012.jpg

Here we are starting the climb and we have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png McCarthy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Kelderman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Borges and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Betancourt as the favourites who are near the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Southland/S4/PCM0013.jpg

Under 3 km to go now and we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Van Stayen has moved up with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hlf.png Kump in his wheel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Moscon is behind Kelderman. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Hagen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Prevar and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bns.png Edmondson are further back in the picture.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Southland/S4/PCM0014.jpg

Less than 2 km to go now. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png McCormick has been leading this group all the way up this climb and is still going. We now spot the UBS duo pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Müller and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Dall'Oste.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Southland/S4/PCM0015.jpg

It's still very cagey. They've dealt with the steepest section. A few more 100 m of uphill, then it's a flattish finish to the line. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mck.png Boswell has made the effort to find a better position now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Southland/S4/PCM0016.jpg

We are now in the final 500 m on the flat road and we are going to have a sprint! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Borges goes early, but this is also a great outcome for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Van Stayen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hlf.png Kump who are both launching their sprints.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Southland/S4/PCM0017.jpg

200 m to go and it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Borges ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png McCormick. Can Duolingo make it a 1-2 finish?! They also have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Oliveira who's close by next to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Van Stayen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Southland/S4/PCM0018.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Borges puts the icing on the cake. Great win for him after some great work by his team. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Van Stayen outsprints pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png McCormick for 2nd place. This was close to a perfect stage for the Belgian.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Southland/S4/PCM0019.jpg

The same time as the winner is given to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png McCarthy in 4th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mck.png Boswell 5th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hlf.png Kump 6th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png De Gendt 7th. Zalgiris with some nice depth today, but not as good as Duolingo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Oliveira in 8th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bns.png Edmondson in 12th heads the group which is given a 19'' gap. Including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Betancourt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Kelderman and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Hagen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Southland/S4/PCM0020.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Borges takes over the GC lead before the final stage. He has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hlf.png Kump and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Van Stayen both only 8'' behind him, which means a 3rd place finish on the final stage would put either above Borges. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn stays in green, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Borges tied has in the KOM classification, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gla.png Haas will continue wearing the jersey. As will pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Oliveira as the best young rider.
