Tour of Ukraine
Stage 3 of the Tour of Ukraine is a 26k time trial, mostly flat but with some bumps that might have an influence. The GC will likely be decided between Pluchkin and Bobridge. The Moldovan starts the day with a 10 second edge.
The TT riders are the stage favorites. Of those only Keizer (4th at 59 seconds) and Cataford (7th at 1’41 ) are in the GC battle.
Robert is the lantern rouge and therefore the first to finish the TT. He is a pretty good TT rider, his time of 33’20 will be a marker.
Viennet is the first of the really top TT guys to finish and sets a new best of 33’03, 16 seconds better.
Fiedler finishes 22 seconds off the pace.
Marchewka took a surprise lead at the interim check but can’t hold it and finishes 1 second behind the leader.
Same story for Kittel, 1 second ahead of Viennet at the time check, 1 second behind at the finish.
Norsgaard also ahead at the interim but behind at the end, by fractions, he is 2nd.
Haugard makes it stick. He is the new leader at 32’52, 10 seconds better.
Gonzalez Salas takes second, 9 seconds behind.
But almost immediately he is passed by Archibald, who, surprisingly, is the new 2nd, 2 seconds behind the leader.
But then we get a surprising new leader, Henttala, he improves the best time by a massive 32 seconds. He is more of a climber, maybe that is important.
Or maybe the conditions have changed because immediately Stoenchev and Golovash set new 2nd and 3rd best times. Then Sterobo takes over the hot seat with a time of 32’17.
After that things settle down a lot with most of the one-dimensional TT riders gone. The conditions may also have reversed as when Coppel finishes he is well off the pace: +1:24 (32nd). It is raining now.
Gesink has had a disappointing race but is the first man to come anywhere near the interim time. He was third at the time check and finishes in 3rd, 19 seconds off the pace.
Durbridge can’t match that, he finishes in 5th 27 seconds off the pace. But the TT’ers who climb are doing well, Bernal, was only 2 seconds behind at the time check.
And at the finish he has the lead, by 1 second.
Foss is already 43 seconds behind Bernal at the first time check so he will be handing over the White Jersey to Bernal at the end of the stage. ( Oliveira and Munoz, who started the day in 2nd and 3rd in the young rider competition have also finished well behind the Polar rider).
Zmorka will have hoped to gain ground today. But given how the stage has favored climbers so far that may not be possible.
He is 44 seconds down at the time check. The 2nd half is more favorable to the TT guys but he isn’t winning today.
We are in the top 15 now. Laengen crosses the time check 9 seconds behind Bernal.
He finishes in 4th, 13 seconds down. Next home is Uran who loses 22 seconds. They will both pass Novak who loses 51 seconds.
But not Spilak who loses 23 seconds.
Getting to the top 10 now, here is the GC situation before the stage:
Rider Behind in GC Behind Rider in Front Aleksandr Pluchkin - 0 Jack Bobridge + 10 10 Ion Izagirre + 41 31 Martijn Keizer + 59 18 Jan Bakelants + 1'20 21 Jose Fernandes + 1'23 3 Alexandor Cataford + 1'41 18 Omar Fraile + 1'57 16 Pello Bilbao s.t. 0 Kristian Dyrnes + 2'09 12
Bilbao, Dyrnes and Schreurs started the day in 9th, 10th and 11th. They will all be losing a stack of places as they are all well over a minute down at the intermediate check.
Fraile one of the race favorites hasn’t been great so far, and his 23 second deficit at the first check is good but not great.
He finishes at +35, he won’t lose places but he probably won’t gain much either.
Next home is Cataford he is 17 seconds behind Bernal. He won’t lose places but he isn’t likely to gain the time he needs on Fernandes who was only 3 seconds slower at the time check. Although they will all pass Bakelants who is weak in the TT.
Fernandes finishes 30 seconds down in 13th. He holds off the Canadian by 5 seconds and he will move past the Belgian into 5th in the final GC. Great race for him.
Keizer is next man home, he has passed Bakelants on the road. At the split he was 19 seconds down, he will hope to improve on that at the finish.
He doesn’t, he finishes 15th, +31 to Bernal.
Bakelants is next to finish at +3’17 he drops down to 66th in the GC. He knew today would be tough for him but would have hoped for better than 156th on the day.
No disappointment for Izagirre he finishes the stage in 4th at +0’12. He puts time into Keizer.
Bobridge is out on course. The course has really favored the climbers today and he was already 38 seconds off the pace at the time check. Catching Pluchkin seems unlikely.
Pluchkin can see Bobridge up the road. He was just 3 seconds off the pace at the time check, gaining 35 seconds on Bobridge. The GC is safe, a he can focus on a 2nd stage win to go with the GC and the points jersey.
Bobridge finishes under angry skies.
He loses 59 seconds on the day, 52nd on the stage. He will lose 2nd but hold onto the podium thanks to a mediocre ride from Keizer.
Pluchkin powers home in yellow. A great home tour for Popo4ever.
He is 5 second behind, 4th place today. But the GC will be his by a comfortable margin and Popo4ever also take the team jersey.
Bernal is the surprise stage winner. No doubt there will be many more to come. A good race for Polar as he moves up to 11th overall and they are 2nd in the teams competition.
But in terms of surprises Henttala’s 3rd place on the stage takes the cake, Phillips won’t have expected those points.
