Tour of Southland - Stage 3

Stage Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Southland/S3/profile.jpg

Stage 3 is back to being about the sprinters. There are also two category 4 climbs, so we could see a big battle to get in the breakaway to contest those KOM points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Southland/S3/PCM0001.jpg

The first attack of the day comes from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gct.png Ulysbayev, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/brs.png Tesfatsion.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Southland/S3/PCM0002.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tlt.png Primozic, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gla.png Teggart and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Nieuwenhuis tag along.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Southland/S3/PCM0003.jpg

We have a bigger group now with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tlt.png Pibernik, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tlt.png Knox, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gla.png McCarthy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bwt.png Robov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Schäppi joining to make it 10 riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Southland/S3/PCM0004.jpg

The peloton weren't letting a group that big get away and brought everything back together. After some counter attacks pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bwt.png Kochetkov managed to get away. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Spengler also tried to bridge over, but both got brought back again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Southland/S3/PCM0005.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/vlf.png Barbero and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gla.png Haas are the next to try their luck today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Southland/S3/PCM0006.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Grand is trying to join those two up the road. The gaps are small and 40 km into the stage we still aren't sure about the breakaway of the day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Southland/S3/PCM0007.jpg

We have one more attack and it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/adp.png Castrillo who is trying to regain his KOM lead. The peloton seems to have finally eased up now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Southland/S3/PCM0008.jpg

The breakaway makes its way through the intermediate sprint with 2'32'' advantage ahead of the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/adp.png Castrillo wins the sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Southland/S3/PCM0009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gla.png Haas wasn't interested in the points sprint, but he is in the KOM sprint. He wins that ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/adp.png Castrillo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/vlf.png Barbero.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Southland/S3/PCM0010.jpg

69 km to go the breakaway's gap has risen to 3'39''. The main teams chasing are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Jura, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Minions and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Carrefour.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Southland/S3/PCM0011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/adp.png Castrillo knowing he can't beat pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gla.png Haas in an uphill sprint tried to go with a long attack before the incline began, but paid for that as he only managed to gain one point in the end. By winning both KOMs today pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gla.png Haas takes over the lead in that classification.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Southland/S3/PCM0012.jpg

The peloton completes the catch of the breakaway 13 km from the finish line. We will have a sprint finish as predicted.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Southland/S3/PCM0013.jpg

We have some cross winds and that has made train formation a bit more difficult and some sprinters poorly positioned with 3 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Southland/S3/PCM0014.jpg

2 km to go and this is a big mess. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Van Stayen looks the best right now with two teammates in front of him. Minions are all over the place with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Hagen on the left and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Vesely far behind him. We have quite a few sprinter that have lined up behind the green jersey of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/sva.png Bouhanni.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Southland/S3/PCM0015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Habtom is already releasing Reinhardt under the final km, which seems way too early. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Hayakawa still in front of Van Stayen. The other riders in good positions are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/sva.png Bouhanni, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gct.png Appollonio on the left and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gla.png Nelson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bns.png Wippert on the right.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Southland/S3/PCM0016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Van Stayen leaves the wheel now with 600 m to go with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/sva.png Bouhanni and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gct.png Appollonio right behind them. Late moves are now being made by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gcn.png Nizzolo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tlt.png Selig, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Vesely, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/adp.png Abdul Halil and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lph.png Maksimov.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Southland/S3/PCM0017.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gct.png Appollonio surges ahead with 300 m to go and looks to be in pole position here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Southland/S3/PCM0018.jpg

Oh boy! This is another tight decision pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn seems to have had a great last burst, but we have to wait for the official results.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Southland/S3/PCM0019.jpg

Yes, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Roman Lutsyshyn is confirmed as the stage winner! He just managed to beat pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gcn.png Nizzolo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bns.png Wippert on the line.

4th place goes to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tlt.png Selig, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gct.png Appollonio who ran out of gas is 5th. 6th for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/adp.png Abdul Halil, 7th pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/sva.png Bouhanni and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Vesely somehow managed to finish 8th.

No changes in the GC with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Kelderman as the race leader. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn's win today nets him the green jersey, polkadot goes to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gla.png Haas, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Oliveira stays in white.
