Stage 2 Report

Stage 2 of the Tour of Ukraine will dictate whether the puncheurs can rise up the GC standings, if it is selective they will, if it isn’t they will be buried tomorrow. Only 130k with two Cat 3s, then a 3.4k climb to the finish that carries Cat 2 KOM points, so the stage winner could well be the King of the Mountains.

Not surprisingly the stage favorites are the puncheurs

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/Ukraine/S2/favs.jpg

The breakaway seems like a pretty doomed effort today but that doesn’t reduce the interest level. With 120k to go there are 7 riders up front an another 7 trying to come across. Minions are chasing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/Ukraine/S2/01.jpg

112k and the 14 breakaway riders have come together, but the pack is right behind and with only 1200 meters to the first KOM point, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Asgreen decides to attack from the break.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/Ukraine/S2/02.jpg

Asgreen can’t get away and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/t3a.png Morales Ortega take over at the front. 300 meters to the KOM.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/Ukraine/S2/03.jpg

But he can’t hold it either and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/brs.png Schoonbroodt takes the points ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Manfredi with the Podium Ambition rider in third.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/Ukraine/S2/04.jpg

While the KOM stretches the lead the peloton isn’t willing to let this big a group go. With 100k to ride the lead is down to 19 seconds so pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Asgreen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/voy.png Natarov try to get some separation.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/Ukraine/S2/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kmm.png Stimulak closes down most of the break for Kraftwerk while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Manfredi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/t3a.png Morales Ortega and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Afonso bridge up to the front two.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/Ukraine/S2/06.jpg

But the attacks aren’t finished yet as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Poljanski leads a new round.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/Ukraine/S2/07.jpg

85k to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aab.png Gesbert jumped off Poljanski’s wheel to join the front leaving the Minion to claw his way across on his own. He still needs 9 seconds. Other attacks were shut down but the peloton was willing to let pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bwt.png Ludvigsson go solo, he is 54 seconds behind the front of the race. The peloton has eased off and is at 2’05.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/Ukraine/S2/08.jpg

At the first sprint point pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Asgreen takes the points ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aab.png Gesbert and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Manfredi. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Poljanski has reached them pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bwt.png Ludvigsson is 33 seconds behind. Pojanski is the best placed on GC at 1’04.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/Ukraine/S2/09.jpg

At the second sprint pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Asgreen wins again ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/t3a.png Morales Ortega and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Manfredi. Ludvigsson is now 1’06 back and won’t make the junction. The peloton at 1’45 with Red Bull, Los Pollos, Project Africa, cycleYorkshire, UBS and Aker all contributing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/Ukraine/S2/10.jpg

40k to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lph.png Spilak feeling good as Los Pollos are contributing heavily to the chase. Lead is 1’29

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/Ukraine/S2/11.jpg

19k to go and the breakaway is over. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Rodriguez Galindo putting the final nails in their coffin as the peloton tackles an uncategorized climb. Between here and the finishing climb they have a cat 3 to deal with. 11 riders have been dropped from the peloton, including some 2nd tier TT riders, but none high on the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/Ukraine/S2/12.jpg

But the high pace splits the peloton soon after with 37 riders breaking free. For some teams maybe an indication of team leaders as Los Pollos have Zmorka up front but not Spilak, Aker have Laengen but not Amezawa, Polar Izaguirre but not Bernal. Assa Abloy, Minions and Duolingo have just missed it as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aab.png Faglum Karlsson (3rd on GC) pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Uran (14th) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Gesink are behind. Many of the rest of the GC top 10 are also behind but not the race leader. The gap is 51 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/Ukraine/S2/13.jpg

10k to go, although pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Keizer is up front but Red Bull are leading the chase and the gap is down to 40 seconds. Maybe working for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Dees who is 9th in GC but missed the split. The cat 3 starts soon.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/Ukraine/S2/14.jpg

1k to the top of the cat 3, 7.6k to ride. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Rodriguez Galindo forcing the pace again for Polar in the front group. Kraftwerk have also been contributing. Chase group is still 41 seconds behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/Ukraine/S2/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Gunman takes the KOM points ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gcn.png Pantano Gomez and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Rodriguez Galindo. None of those riders scored before which means the stage winner will likely also be the KOM for the race as there are no points tomorrow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/Ukraine/S2/16.jpg

3.4 k to go as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Rodriguez Galindo leads them onto the final climb. The chase has lost momentum and is a minute back. The winner will come from this group. Some of the best placed leaders are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Fraile, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Bobridge, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kmm.png Bilbao

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/Ukraine/S2/17.jpg

2.7 km to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Dyrnes has moved pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Keizer into position. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Gebrezgabihier protecting pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Bobridge on his right. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Rodriguez Galindo is with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Izagirre. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Bakelants has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Novak and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Gunman with him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Fernandes and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/t3a.png Cataford well placed but on their own.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/Ukraine/S2/18.jpg

2k to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Izagirre attacks with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Bakelants on his wheel. The TT riders who were this group, like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/akm.png Lammertink and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Durbridge are being dropped. But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lph.png Zmorka is still hanging on.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/Ukraine/S2/19.jpg

1500 meters and the two attackers have a small gap as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Bobridge leads the chase.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/Ukraine/S2/20.jpg

Under the 1k banner the Australian makes his move, the Yellow Jersey on his wheel. They are 12 seconds behind the leaders and 15 seconds ahead of a chase group which still includes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lph.png Zmorka (just).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/Ukraine/S2/21.jpg

600 meters for the leaders who have come together as a group of four, although Bobridge and Pluchkin look stronger. They now have 27 seconds over a group of 8 which includes most notably pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Keizer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Fernandes and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/t3a.png Cataford. Further back pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Uran has made up significant ground.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/Ukraine/S2/22.jpg

The gaps look like this, but they are likely to be fluid.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/Ukraine/S2/sit1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Bobridge pulls away from the other 3 in sight of the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/Ukraine/S2/23.jpg

It is going to be another stage win and the KOM for the Project Africa man. He will have to wait and see what time gaps he has to work with in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/Ukraine/S2/24.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin will definitely have a shot at the GC in his team’s home tour as he take second ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Izagirre and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Bakelants.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/Ukraine/S2/25.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Dyrnes takes 5th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Keizer. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gcn.png Schreurs 7th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kmm.png Bilbao 8th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/Ukraine/S2/26.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Laas takes 9th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Fernandes completes the top 10, another good ride for him and he should be in line for a strong GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/Ukraine/S2/27.jpg

But the time gaps are what will matter for the GC. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Bobridge gets 8 seconds over the next 3, 30 seconds on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Keizer, 1 minute on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Fernandes and 1’09 on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/t3a.png Cataford, who finished 11th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lph.png Zmorka ends up in 26th 1’55 down 10 spots and 8 seconds behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lph.png Spilak, who was flying at the end. Los Pollos may have bet on the wrong horse.

So that means pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin has a 10 second lead in the GC over Bobridge. Those two are very evenly matched. If they both suffer then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Izagirre 3rd at 41 seconds and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Keizer, 4th at 59 will be ready to pounce.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin leads the point jersey and Red Bull takes the team lead. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/akm.png Foss leads the young rider competition but only barely.
