Tirreno-Adriatico
Stage 3 of Tirreno-Adriatico is the second and last chance for the sprinters. At 200km it is a longer than yesterday. It also features a Cat 2 climb mid-stage as well as a Cat 3. Still a bunch sprint seems likely. But as the finish is at the top of short grade with slopes of nearly 8% it might not be a text book bunch sprint.
The stage favorites show up as:
A lot of fighting to get in the break today. 14km in and Feng and Debesay have a small gap to Peters with Vanthourenhout and Van Niekerk trying to escape the pack behind.
With almost 30k gone only the front two above have been able to get a gap of just over a minute. King Power and Xero, and to a lesser extent, Gazelle, EA Vesuvio, Isostar and Grieg, have all been trying to get riders away. This attack includes the lantern rouge, Kipkemboi , 2nd on GC and points leader, Leung, and EA Vesuvio’s Bax.
That attack was closed down but finally Boonratanathanakorn gets away solo and the attacks calm down. With 165k to go he bridges up to Feng who has been dropped by Debesay.
Soon after the thee reunite and with 160km to ride their lead is 2’31.
At the Cat 3, Boonratanathanakorn goes first but Debesay sweeps by him to take the points. They have 142k to ride and a 2’53 lead.
117km to go and 1.7k to the top of the Cat 2. The lead is 3’15 having peaked at just over 4 minutes. Debesay attacks first, with 10 points for first, he has a good shot at the KOM jersey on this climb.
But he seems to have put out too much energy and with 300 meters to go the other two come past him.
And Feng takes the points ahead of Boonratanathanakorn and Debesay. All 3 riders are on 12 points as is the current leader, Lampawog, But there are still a few points for the pack.
Smartly Lampawog jumps out of the pack to take the last 2 points and retain the jersey. Cannister, who also scored yesterday, goes with him and take 4 points but he only has 8 total.
At the first of the two sprints, Debesay, grabs first place while Boonratanathanakorn almost gets run over. The counter-attackers continued after the KOM and are now 42 seconds off the lead. The peloton is at 2’34. 96k to go.
At the 2nd sprint with 62k to go it is the same order. The counter-attackers never got closer than 37 seconds and are now almost back in the pack which is at 1’35.
40km to go the gap is 1’21. Aegon, Mapei and Festina riding. The World Champion keeping himself near the front with Mager for company.
30km to go, the lead is 1’12. The peloton is on the finishing circuit, the steep slope to the finish can be seen, in 3 more laps the riders will be fighting for the victory up this ramp.
12km to and the catch is made. Around a few more corners the riders face the finishing climb for the last time before it is the finish. The pack has split the last two times around.
9km to go and the pack has split. The Xero rider at the front of the second group is Areruya and the Carlsberg rider on the near right is Guldhammer. They both look isolated. The other GC riders are all safely in the front group.
Higuita is working to close the gap and has pulled 12 riders, including the two GC candidates, clear of the 2nd peloton. But the gap to the front is still 1’05 with 5km to go. Riders have been falling off the front group so that might save them by bridging the gap between the front two groups. Up front Aegon and Festina are still driving the pace and most of the sprinters are there. Warbasse has made the split for Carlsberg.
3.3km to go the front group is still over a minute clear and the sprinters are getting in position, if they go too early today they will never make it. Herklotz is calm enough to be on the radio – is he thinking this could be a stage for him?
1.3km to go and Bewley is already on the front. Behind him the Aegon trio of Olivier, Vermeersch, and Groenewegen. Then Kragh Andersen, Rowe, Coquard and Harrison. The Blue Jersey in the pack right behind with a mix of sprinters and GC riders. Cattaneo is the Zwift rider up front, Swift in the front group but further back. Areruya and Guldhammer trying to bridge on their own now. Dropped riders might still prevent a gap.
The corners slow the pace and with 500meters to go it is still Bewley. The same riders behind him. The sections over 5% are about to start.
300 meters Bewley has the lead and the inside line but the riders behind are closing.
100 meters it is looking like the veteran Bewley read the finish perfectly and made sure he had the inside line by going from the bottom of the hill. Hofstetter is the Evonik rider trying to reach the front. The two dropped GC riders are still trying to close the gap.
Bewley takes Stage 2.
Kragh Andersen edges Groenewegen for a good second but will be hoping his GC leader can avert disaster behind.
Harrison ahead of Rowe and Coquard for 4rd, 5th and 6th. Again only a minor placing for the Festina rider.
Kemboi takes 7th and Hofstetter, Petit and Dombrowski complete the top 10.
500 meters for Areruya and Guldhammer, the trail of dropped riders leading all the way to the front group of the group is just ahead of them. Maybe the time gaps will go in their favor?
As they reach the finish that looks like a gap in front.
Kemboi retains the leader jersey with Leung still in 2nd. The Farfetch rider also takes the points lead on placings ahead of Coquard. Festina get the White with Giannoutsos and EA Vesuvio take over the team lead. Expect most of that to change tomorrow.
The first time gap is awarded after 61 riders, sitting in 62nd is Areruya. He and Guldhammer (63rd) lose 1’24. Neither of them was expecting a podium but that is a big blow in the fight to be the best of the rest.
