Tirreno-Adriatico
Stage 2 of Tireno-Adriatico is the simplest road stage of the race. Two Cat 3 bumps early to hand out the KOM jersey and then flat roads to what should be a sprint finish.
The stage favorites show up as:
As the riders leave Camaiore Leung shows off the Blue Jersey, which looks a lot like the King Power jersey of Petelin next to him. The first KOM point is just 13k away so look for a quick fight for the break.
3k to the top of the first climb and 3 riders are out in front: Cannister, Lampawog, and Stoltz. The two chasers are Peters and Geniets.
But the pack isn’t willing to let this group go and with 1.7k to the top the attack is shut down.
Cannister and Lampawog attack again and the EA Vesuvio rider wins the sprint under the beautiful KOM banner.
Goncalves takes the last two points from the pack.
The riders will climb that hill again but in between there is a sprint point which is won by Cannister.
The pack is only 1’06 back because Festina are setting up Coquard to try and snatch the rest of the points.
He does in a heavily contested sprint. Perhaps most importantly that is 2 seconds he gains towards grabbing the race lead.
Lampawog drops his companion and take the 2nd KOM. He will wear the jersey tomorrow.
Cannister is caught and the remaining points go to the peloton.
After the KOM, Peters and Debesay bridge across to create a 3-man break of the day, they have 2’43 with 100k to ride.
Debesay easily takes the 2nd and final sprint ahead of Lampawog. The pack is 2’07 behind with 65k to go. Aegon, Mapei and Festina are chasing.
The race finishes on a circuit around Cascina. So with 20k to go the riders are getting a preview of the finish. The break lead by 42 seconds, Lampawog has been dropped and is almost back in the pack.
With 13km to Frison shuts down the last hold out, Debesay.
3k to go and the sprint begins to take shape. On the left of the picture Coquard is behind Karatzios. His lead out man, Farantakis is out of position and trying to get across the road from the right. Petit is on Coquard’s wheel.
In the center Mapei are more organized with Grosser and Cisse ahead of Bewley.
To their right are Aegon with Frison pulling off. Their lack of a full lead out means that Olivier has been drafted in to do the work. He is followed by Vermeersch and Groenewegen. Immediately behind him is Harrison and then Frantakis and the rest of the sprinters lined up behind him. Most of the other riders in the picture are the GC guys and their attendants.
The Mapei train proves it superiority and with 1.7k to go they have a clear lead. But can they hold the speed to the line? Behind them are Aegon with Olivier pulling off. Coquard has found Farantakis but at the cost of some ground. Of the rest Harrison, Trondsen and Petit (left to right) are best positioned.
Mapei have left Bewley a lot to do as with 1k to go he is in the wind. Groenewegen to the left and Coquard, behind and slightly to the right, still have their lead outs. Festina might benefit from the delay in getting organized. Trondsen has dropped back but Kemboi is making up ground behind Harrison on the left.
500 meters to go and Groenewegen leads. Behind him left to right are Harrison, Kemboi, a fading Bewley, Coquard and Petit. Of those the Kenyan is moving fastest. The grouping behind on the left includes Enger, Moser, Rowe, and Holloway. Trondsen has also got going again. The other sprinters are further back and Swift must not be feeling good today as he is sitting this one out.
300 meters and Kemboi goes rocketing to the front. The group behind had made up ground.
100 meters now for Kemboi and he still has a clear lead. Trondsen is now in second and Holloway is still moving up on the right but Enger has more speed.
Kemboi has time to celebrate.
Enger snatches second ahead of his countryman Trondsen.
Holloway fourth, then Coquard, Petit, Groenewegen, Moser, Rowe and Kragh Andersen complete the top 10.
Bewley slips to 12th.
The stage win is enough to give Kemboi the leader’s jersey as well. Leung holds on to the points jersey, Moser the team jersey and Larsen the young rider jersey.
