Stage 2 Report

Stage 2 of Tireno-Adriatico is the simplest road stage of the race. Two Cat 3 bumps early to hand out the KOM jersey and then flat roads to what should be a sprint finish.

The stage favorites show up as:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/favs.jpg

As the riders leave Camaiore pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Leung shows off the Blue Jersey, which looks a lot like the King Power jersey of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Petelin next to him. The first KOM point is just 13k away so look for a quick fight for the break.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/01.jpg

3k to the top of the first climb and 3 riders are out in front: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Cannister, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Lampawog, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Stoltz. The two chasers are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Peters and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Geniets.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/02.jpg

But the pack isn’t willing to let this group go and with 1.7k to the top the attack is shut down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/03.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Cannister and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Lampawog attack again and the EA Vesuvio rider wins the sprint under the beautiful KOM banner.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Goncalves takes the last two points from the pack.

The riders will climb that hill again but in between there is a sprint point which is won by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Cannister.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/05.jpg

The pack is only 1’06 back because Festina are setting up pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Coquard to try and snatch the rest of the points.

He does in a heavily contested sprint. Perhaps most importantly that is 2 seconds he gains towards grabbing the race lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/06.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Lampawog drops his companion and take the 2nd KOM. He will wear the jersey tomorrow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Cannister is caught and the remaining points go to the peloton.

After the KOM, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Peters and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Debesay bridge across to create a 3-man break of the day, they have 2’43 with 100k to ride.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Debesay easily takes the 2nd and final sprint ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Lampawog. The pack is 2’07 behind with 65k to go. Aegon, Mapei and Festina are chasing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/09.jpg

The race finishes on a circuit around Cascina. So with 20k to go the riders are getting a preview of the finish. The break lead by 42 seconds, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Lampawog has been dropped and is almost back in the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/10.jpg

With 13km to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Frison shuts down the last hold out, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Debesay.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/11.jpg

3k to go and the sprint begins to take shape. On the left of the picture pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Coquard is behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Karatzios. His lead out man, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Farantakis is out of position and trying to get across the road from the right. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Petit is on Coquard’s wheel.

In the center Mapei are more organized with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Grosser and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Cisse ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Bewley.

To their right are Aegon with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Frison pulling off. Their lack of a full lead out means that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Olivier has been drafted in to do the work. He is followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Vermeersch and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen. Immediately behind him is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Harrison and then Frantakis and the rest of the sprinters lined up behind him. Most of the other riders in the picture are the GC guys and their attendants.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/12.jpg

The Mapei train proves it superiority and with 1.7k to go they have a clear lead. But can they hold the speed to the line? Behind them are Aegon with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Olivier pulling off. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Coquard has found pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Farantakis but at the cost of some ground. Of the rest pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Harrison, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Trondsen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Petit (left to right) are best positioned.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/13.jpg

Mapei have left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Bewley a lot to do as with 1k to go he is in the wind. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen to the left and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Coquard, behind and slightly to the right, still have their lead outs. Festina might benefit from the delay in getting organized. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Trondsen has dropped back but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi is making up ground behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Harrison on the left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/14.jpg

500 meters to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen leads. Behind him left to right are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Harrison, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi, a fading pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Bewley, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Coquard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Petit. Of those the Kenyan is moving fastest. The grouping behind on the left includes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Enger, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Moser, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Rowe, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Holloway. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Trondsen has also got going again. The other sprinters are further back and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Swift must not be feeling good today as he is sitting this one out.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/15.jpg

300 meters and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi goes rocketing to the front. The group behind had made up ground.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/16.jpg

100 meters now for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi and he still has a clear lead. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Trondsen is now in second and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Holloway is still moving up on the right but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Enger has more speed.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi has time to celebrate.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Enger snatches second ahead of his countryman pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Trondsen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Holloway fourth, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Coquard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Petit, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Moser, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Rowe and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen complete the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S2/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Bewley slips to 12th.

The stage win is enough to give Kemboi the leader’s jersey as well. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Leung holds on to the points jersey, Moser the team jersey and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Larsen the young rider jersey.
