Race Report

Welcome to the 2021 edition of Tirreno-Adriatico, a light day for the riders today with just 5.4km to be ridden. But it still counts as a stage win and the winner also gets to wear the blue leader’s jersey tomorrow.

The stage favorites show up as:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S1/favs.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Parra Bustamente is the first man down the start ramp on a sunny day in Italy

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S1/01.jpg

The second man down is one of the top prologue riders. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Tanfield sets the time to beat at 6’10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S1/02.jpg

A few riders later is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Zakarin, he goes 2 seconds slower.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S1/03.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Prado is the first of the GC-type riders to finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S1/04.jpg

He is good in the prologues and loses just 6 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Yates is the first true GC rider at the finish. He is solid but unspectacular in the discipline, he loses 17 seconds (6’27). That seems manageable.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S1/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Padun is the next notable rider. One of the weakest IT riders among the top contenders he loses 26 seconds to Tanfield and 9 seconds to Yates.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S1/06.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Guldhammer beats Yates by 1 second.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S1/07.jpg

Kiwi Champion pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Sergent is the next TT specialist to cross.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S1/08.jpg

He is 6 seconds slower than Tanfield.

But Tanfield’s time on the hot seat comes to an end as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Kukrle beats him by 2 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S1/09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Olivier is the next GC rider.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S1/10.jpg

He loses 20 seconds to the leader but that is just a single second behind Guldhammer, Aegon will be satisfied with that.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Leung on the course. He is one of the top favorites.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S1/11.jpg

He sets the new best time at 6’06, 1 second up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Chavanne crosses soon after but it is not his day as he is 5 seconds off the pace.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S1/12.jpg

Two more of the GC riders go through, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Areruya will be happy to lose just 7 seconds to Guldhammer but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Berhane less so, as he loses 18 seconds on his GC rival. He is the weakest of the top GC guys so far.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Stoltz is another prologue specialist for Evonik, but he can only manage 8th, 8 seconds behind, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Goldstein has finished as well, he is 6th, 7 seconds behind Leung.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S1/13.jpg

King Power may have the stage lead but they don’t take the lead among GC riders as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Roglic loses 9 seconds to Guldhammer.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S1/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Godoy finishes soon after and is 11 seconds behind Guldhammer.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin is next, he should set the new best time for the GC riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S1/15.jpg

And he does, 16 seconds behind Leung and 4 seconds ahead of Guldhammer.

The top favorite pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Andersen finishes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S1/16.jpg

He is 1 second behind, only good enough for third.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi disappoints, 13 seconds off the lead, only good enough for 20th. That will mean he needs a stage win to take the Blue jersey tomorrow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S1/17.jpg

Amaysim have a very colorful look this year, this is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Morton showing it off.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S1/18.jpg

And he does the kit proud, finishing on the same time and just 1 place behind of Pluchkin.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Dombrowski is also featuring a new kit but his time is much weaker, he loses 15 seconds to Pluchkin. Only Berhane was slower among the GC riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S1/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Cattaneo is with a new team with a new kit and he has the best time for a GC rider, 6’15, which is good enough for 11th on the stage and a 7 second lead over Pluckin.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S1/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Herklotz is the last of the GC riders on the course.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S1/21.jpg

And he matches Cattaneo’s time but is behind on the fractions. This is probably the only time one of his GC rivals will be ahead of him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Coquard is the last rider to finish and he loses just 6 seconds (6th place). He will hope to take the GC lead in one of the sprint stages.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S1/22.jpg

So the stage and the first leader’s jersey go to King Power’s Chun Wing Leung. For the GC riders it looks like this:
