Paris-Nice - Stage 7

Stage Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S7/profile.jpg

Stage 7 is the queen stage of this year's Paris-Nice. 215 km today including a double category 1 climb at the midpoint of the stage and constant up and down terrain for the final 40 km.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S7/PCM0001.jpg

The first attack is initiated by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Budyak followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png van der Poel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Jang.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S7/PCM0002.jpg

The first attack was chased down so pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Jang goes again, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png van der Poel again in the wheel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Zardini has latched on this time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S7/PCM0003.jpg

Another group is going away with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Hofstede, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Sergis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Budyak, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Shinnagel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Zakarin. The peloton are chasing furiously behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S7/PCM0004.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Zakarin has to make a 2nd attempt and as we see the gaps are very small as of now. We don't have a sure breakaway yet.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S7/PCM0005.jpg

The pace is very high across the board. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Zakarin has made into the breakaway group, but the pace is too hard for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Zardini who's been dropped and is now in between.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S7/PCM0006.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png van der Poel manages to pick up 10 more pts to extend his KOM lead. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Jang is 2nd, a strugglingpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Zakarin 3rd and behind we see a new group bridging over with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Barbin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Prevar, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Zwiehoff and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Van Niekerk.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S7/PCM0007.jpg

The peloton finally relents and let's the breakaway go, but look at this? pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png van der Poel seems to have overextended himself as he's dropping on this false flat section.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S7/PCM0008.jpg

There won't be any pts for him on the next KOM, he's still struggling back there. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Prevar, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Zakarin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Zwiehoff take the points, but it's the who was sitting 2nd in KOM classification and now has a chance to pounce.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S7/PCM0009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png van der Poel finally makes contact with the front, but we have the double cat. 1 climb coming up. He'll surely be in trouble again there. Speaking of trouble, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Zardini is still in no man's land trying to catch, but he can't seem to make any inroads and is getting closer to the peloton than the front group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S7/PCM0010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Zakarin is the most motivated rider here now and he grabs 16 KOM pts ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Prevar, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Van Niekerk and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png van der Poel who's lead in that classification is melting now. The breakaway has over 3 minutes advantage on the peloton at this point with 105 km left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S7/PCM0011.jpg

We saw it coming. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png van der Poel is dropped as he looks upwards and see's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Zakarin take another 16 pts and the virtual KOM now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S7/PCM0012.jpg

The peloton also passes the highest point of today's stage and there are still 100+ riders here. They are probably taking it somewhat easy after that frantic start.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S7/PCM0013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png van der Poel's day in the breakaway is over as he gets caught by the peloton on this narrow technical descent. The 6 riders remaining in the breakaway have 2'18'' over the peloton. 75 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S7/PCM0014.jpg

Final KOM of the day. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Jang has been dropped, but Festina still has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Van Niekerk who picks up 10 pts ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Prevar and a now more tired pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Zakarin. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Barbin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Zwiehoff are doing their best to hang on.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S7/PCM0015.jpg

We see splits in the peloton as they traverse more of these dangerous descents. All the favourites are in this front group, except on further inspection, someone is missing. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Sepulveda was poorly positioned and is 2 groups behind right now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S7/PCM0016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Sepulveda has made it back by the end of the downhill as the peloton is now on this bumpy final circuit, crossing the finish line. Two laps with a final rise to the line still remain.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S7/PCM0017.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Barbin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Zwiehoff have been absorbed by the peloton, only the 3 riders remain in front. They have 2'03'' advantage left with 25 km to go, but the peloton have them in their sights now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S7/PCM0018.jpg

Last lap. The 3 leaders only 1'16'' left with 16 km to go. It's going to be difficult to hold off the favourites.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S7/PCM0019.jpg

Back in the peloton we have an attack from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Gidich, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Guerreiro and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Errazkin.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S7/PCM0020.jpg

The attack doesn't quite stick, but the acceleration has completely broken apart the group that is now only 19 riders big. There are riders everyone across the road, but some of the names left behind are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Choi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Dennis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Tvetcov.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S7/PCM0021.jpg

Acceleration from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Rodriguez now as he creates another small group with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Phinney, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Errazkin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Gidich and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Wirtgen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S7/PCM0022.jpg

We forgot about the front of the race, but in reality they were pretty much just dangling in front of the favourites. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Van Niekerk is the last one trying to hold them off with 6 km left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S7/PCM0023.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Gidich uses him as a springboard and flies past him! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Wirtgen giving chase.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S7/PCM0024.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Gidich has the smallest of gaps going into the final uphill kilometer to the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S7/PCM0025.jpg

It looks to be between pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Bobridge and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Errazkin going into the final 200 m.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S7/PCM0026.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Bobridge shows his superior kick again, another stage win for him!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S7/PCM0027.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png De Bie manages to sprint for 2nd and some valuable bonus seconds. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Rodriguez is with a great ride today in 3rd place. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Errazkin just falters in the end, but still a very good 4th place.

Then a 12'' gap is given to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Gidich 5th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Wirtgen 6th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Geoghegan Hart 7th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Phinney in 8th, then breakaway survivor pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Van Niekerk in 9th and a surprising pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Palyi 10th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S7/PCM0028.jpg

GC wise pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Phinney takes minimum losses and is still comfortably the leader. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Bobridge moves into 2nd, while Paris-Nice surprise pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Dyball holds on in 3rd. A good day for the puncheurs as they move higher in GC at the expense of the TTers and some stage racers. Phinney continues as the points leader also. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Zakarin is the new KOM leader and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Wirtgen remains the best young rider.
