Paris-Nice - Stage 1

Stage Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S1/profile.jpg

2021 Paris-Nice starts off with a 6.7 km prologue. We have some great specialists here, but the GC riders will also look at this as the first chance to put time into each other. Let the race begin!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S1/PCM0001.jpg

The first rider across the line is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Wohler. The Aussie is a decent time-trialer and his time should be a solid benchmark to start with.

8'26''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S1/PCM0002.jpg

We almost missed pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Wirtgen. He's one of the favourites for today and a big rider for the GC. He sets the new best time. Let's see how long it stands.

8'09''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S1/PCM0003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Oliveira is good against the clock and a good all round rider and he comes within one second of Wirtgen's time.

8'10''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S1/PCM0004.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Powless is another big rider for this race and he really doesn't concede much. Only 2'' slower than Wirtgen.

8'11''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S1/PCM0005.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Sepulveda comes through next. He's 7'' behind Wirtgen.

8'16''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S1/PCM0006.jpg

Oh, but we have a new best time now. It's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Vorobev who's a second faster than Wirtgen.

8'08''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S1/PCM0007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Vlatos specifically targeted this stage, but the margins are small and 2'' down means only 3rd place right now.

8'10''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S1/PCM0008.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Paillot comes into this fresh off a win in Portugal, albeit in the longer TT. He's good, but just misses out by a second which puts him in 2nd. It has started to rain by the way, but I don't think that should bother the riders.

8'09''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S1/PCM0009.jpg

Maybe the rain is helping?! This is a surprise, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Hussein is given the new best time! Judged to be a fraction faster than Vorobev.

8'07''

We're sorry, we have our new best time and we were caught off guard and our cameras missed it. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Dyball has set a new marker, a full 3'' faster than Hussein.

8'04''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S1/PCM0010.jpg

We have Portugal prologue winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Schomber coming across the line and he's nowhere near it today. 8'' slower is only enough for 11th place.

8'12''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S1/PCM0011.jpg

One of the favourites today and a GC hopeful is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Dennis, but he is 6'' slower than his teammate and will have to settle 8th currently.

8'10''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S1/PCM0012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Ganna is a budding TT star, but he can't quite reach the top today. 4'' down puts him in 5th for now.

8'08''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S1/PCM0013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Gidich puts in a very solid effort. He's only 4'' slower than Wirtgen who is still top among the GC contenders.

8'13''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S1/PCM0014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Yatsevich has a disappointing ride. He can only place 24th with this effort.

8'17''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S1/PCM0015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Würtz prefers the longer efforts and it really shows today. Only 55th is pretty bad for him.

8'25''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S1/PCM0016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Bobridge is a key GC rider and he is having a bad day as well. He concedes 16'' to Wirtgen.

8'25''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/ParisNice/S1/PCM0017.jpg

While others are floundering pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Phinney pounces. The TT world champion sets the new best time with aplomb. He beats Dyball by 12''.

7'52''

And he guess what? He was the final rider off the start ramp. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Taylor Phinney starts the race the way he wanted and wins the opening prologue.

He's also leading the points classification, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Dyball will wear that jersey in his stead. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Ganna is on the same time as Wirtgen and just manages to pip him for the young rider's jersey.
