Volta a Portugal - Stage 5

Stage Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/profile.jpg

Stage 5 looks like a stage that the breakaway may like. There is category 1 climb near the end, but then another 10 km of descent before the finish. We will see if it will have a major impact on the GC battle.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/PCM0001.jpg

Wow! First attack of the day and it comes from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Borges?! Duolingo perhaps not all in on Gesink anymore.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/PCM0002.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Borges already with over a minute advantage before we see the next move from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Girdlestone and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Dyrnes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/PCM0003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Hayter attacking now followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Ssabagwanya, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ino.png Jensen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Bellis. The Dane is an even bigger surprise here because he's only 26'' down on the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/PCM0004.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Abreu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ino.png Abdurrahman and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Badilatti also trying to bridge across. It seems teams saw the success of Farfetch and are trying to put multiple riders in the breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/PCM0005.jpg

So we have a group of 10 riders now with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ino.png Jensen having a teammate as well as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Abreu and two cycleYorkshire riders. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Hayter most likely to target the KOM pts.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/PCM0006.jpg

We have another big group going away now, 11 more riders going up the road! The peloton either can't or doesn't want to control this. For example pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Tryg aren't at the front despite having the race leader.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/PCM0007.jpg

Well they tried for a bit, but it just wasn't possible. We now have a group of 21 riders in the breakaway with a current gap of 2'23''. Let's just see who is here:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ino.png Jensen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ino.png Abdurrahman
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ino.png Phodingam
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Borges
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Bagioli
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Hayter
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Bellis
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Holmes
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Dyrnes
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Krizek
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Girdlestone
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Ssabagwanya
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Main
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Badilatti
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Abreu
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Bouchard
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gcn.png Dunne
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gcn.png Cuming
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/brs.png Vendrame
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Sergis
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Eenkhoorn

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/PCM0008.jpg

Over the first the KOM it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Dyrnes who takes 6 pts, which are his only pts so far. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Krizek and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Hayter take the rest. The Brit started the day 7 pts behind the KOM leader. Almost 70 km into the stage now and the gap is stable at 2'38''.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/PCM0009.jpg

The next KOM follows shortly. This it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Hayter that just pips pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/brs.png Vendrame for maximum points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Eenkhoorn the only other rider interested picks up the last 2.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/PCM0010.jpg

We have a look in the peloton and it's a familiar site of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Villella at the front doing another tremendous job today. He either missed the breakaway or simply wasn't allowed to defend his KOM lead today, but he's keeping the breakaway at 2 minutes with some help from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Moser, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png MOL and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Popo4Ever.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/PCM0011.jpg

We're into the final part of the stage now. Two more KOM sprints in the last 30 km. The 21 riders are still together for now with 1'36'' ahead of the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/PCM0012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gcn.png Cuming started the first acceleration and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Borges is continuing as he wins the KOM sprint over the top of the climb and the group is breaking apart. It's time to fight for the stage now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/PCM0013.jpg

We have 9 riders left as they start climbing the final cat. 1 climb of the day. The breakaway have a sizeable gap over the peloton and it seems likely the winner will come from this group:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Dyrnes
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Borges
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gcn.png Cuming
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ino.png Jensen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Abreu
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Hayter
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Eenkhoorn
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Girdlestone
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Sergis

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/PCM0014.jpg

Last part of the climb and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ino.png Jensen puts in a dig. Remember he gains the most today, because he will surely become the new GC leader.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/PCM0015.jpg

He's opened up a small gap, but there are still l1 km to get the finish line. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Sergis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Hayter have been dropped and the latter hasn't gotten any KOM pts, which means he's on point behind the lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/PCM0016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ino.png Jensen maintains a lead in the final kilometer, behind him we see the others launch their sprint in a desperate attempt to catch up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/PCM0017.jpg

And they almost managed it as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ino.png Jensen was at the end of his strength, but he just managed to outlast them. Fantastic stage win for him!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Dyrnes wins the sprint for 2nd with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Borges 3rd. He probably wanted more from today, a wasted opportunity for him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/PCM0018.jpg

The peloton with the favourites finishes 2'39'' behind the winner. It's puzzling why they would allow a good rider high on the GC like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ino.png Jensen the freedom he got today. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Eenkhoorn is 4th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gcn.png Cuming 5th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Abreu 6th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Girdlestone 7th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Hayter in 8th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/PCM0019.jpg

So pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ino.png Kristian Haugaard Jensen is the new GC leader. The Dane is also the new points leader, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Borges will wear that jersey tomorrow. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Hayter misses out on the KOM jersey which is kept by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Villella, but he will wear the young rider's jersey tomorrow.
