Stage 5 looks like a stage that the breakaway may like. There is category 1 climb near the end, but then another 10 km of descent before the finish. We will see if it will have a major impact on the GC battle.
Wow! First attack of the day and it comes from Borges?! Duolingo perhaps not all in on Gesink anymore.
Borges already with over a minute advantage before we see the next move from Girdlestone and Dyrnes.
Hayter attacking now followed by Ssabagwanya, Jensen and Bellis. The Dane is an even bigger surprise here because he's only 26'' down on the GC.
Abreu, Abdurrahman and Badilatti also trying to bridge across. It seems teams saw the success of Farfetch and are trying to put multiple riders in the breakaway.
So we have a group of 10 riders now with Jensen having a teammate as well as Abreu and two cycleYorkshire riders. Hayter most likely to target the KOM pts.
We have another big group going away now, 11 more riders going up the road! The peloton either can't or doesn't want to control this. For example Tryg aren't at the front despite having the race leader.
Well they tried for a bit, but it just wasn't possible. We now have a group of 21 riders in the breakaway with a current gap of 2'23''. Let's just see who is here:
Jensen
Abdurrahman
Phodingam
Borges
Bagioli
Hayter
Bellis
Holmes
Dyrnes
Krizek
Girdlestone
Ssabagwanya
Main
Badilatti
Abreu
Bouchard
Dunne
Cuming
Vendrame
Sergis
Eenkhoorn
Over the first the KOM it's Dyrnes who takes 6 pts, which are his only pts so far. Krizek and Hayter take the rest. The Brit started the day 7 pts behind the KOM leader. Almost 70 km into the stage now and the gap is stable at 2'38''.
The next KOM follows shortly. This it's Hayter that just pips Vendrame for maximum points. Eenkhoorn the only other rider interested picks up the last 2.
We have a look in the peloton and it's a familiar site of Villella at the front doing another tremendous job today. He either missed the breakaway or simply wasn't allowed to defend his KOM lead today, but he's keeping the breakaway at 2 minutes with some help from Moser, MOL and Popo4Ever.
We're into the final part of the stage now. Two more KOM sprints in the last 30 km. The 21 riders are still together for now with 1'36'' ahead of the peloton.
Cuming started the first acceleration and Borges is continuing as he wins the KOM sprint over the top of the climb and the group is breaking apart. It's time to fight for the stage now.
We have 9 riders left as they start climbing the final cat. 1 climb of the day. The breakaway have a sizeable gap over the peloton and it seems likely the winner will come from this group:
Dyrnes
Borges
Cuming
Jensen
Abreu
Hayter
Eenkhoorn
Girdlestone
Sergis
Last part of the climb and Jensen puts in a dig. Remember he gains the most today, because he will surely become the new GC leader.
He's opened up a small gap, but there are still l1 km to get the finish line. Sergis and Hayter have been dropped and the latter hasn't gotten any KOM pts, which means he's on point behind the lead.
Jensen maintains a lead in the final kilometer, behind him we see the others launch their sprint in a desperate attempt to catch up.
And they almost managed it as Jensen was at the end of his strength, but he just managed to outlast them. Fantastic stage win for him!
Dyrnes wins the sprint for 2nd with Borges 3rd. He probably wanted more from today, a wasted opportunity for him.
The peloton with the favourites finishes 2'39'' behind the winner. It's puzzling why they would allow a good rider high on the GC like Jensen the freedom he got today. Eenkhoorn is 4th, Cuming 5th, Abreu 6th, Girdlestone 7th and Hayter in 8th.
So Kristian Haugaard Jensen is the new GC leader. The Dane is also the new points leader, but Borges will wear that jersey tomorrow. Hayter misses out on the KOM jersey which is kept by Villella, but he will wear the young rider's jersey tomorrow.
