Volta a Portugal - Stage 3

Stage Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/profile.jpg

Stage 3 is the first of four hill rated stages. The final part of the stage doesn't look overly difficult so we will see what kind of GC impact today will have. Lots of KOM points on offer including a category 2 climb in the early part of the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/PCM0001.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Nepomnyachsniy starts the breakaway attempts today. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lph.png Ulloa sets off after him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/PCM0002.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Eeckhout launches the 2nd wave of attacks with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Dyrnes and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lph.png Quispe further behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/PCM0003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Hirschi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/brs.png Vendrame and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Hayter have also made it across to make it 8 riders in the breakaway. There was another attempt, but the peloton is allowing 8 and no more.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/PCM0004.jpg

The 1st intermediate sprint is actually uphill. They could've made it a KOM at the same time, save us some trouble. Nevermind, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Hayter wins it ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/brs.png Vendrame and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Hirschi. The gap to the peloton has opened up to 2'34''.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/PCM0005.jpg

The 1st cat. 4 climb of the is soon after. All the riders here are on 0 pts, their target today is 15 to take the jersey. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Hirschi just beats out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/brs.png Vendrame for the 5 pts. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Nepomnyachsniy takes the last one.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/PCM0006.jpg

The peloton is about to start the cat. 2 climb. They are 3'11'' behind as we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png UBS, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Isostar, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Moser, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Popo4Ever and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Tryg setting the pace.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/PCM0007.jpg

A top the climb we have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Hayter taking 10 pts, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Hirschi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/brs.png Vendrame, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lph.png Ulloa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Nepomnyachsniy. The other 3 riders have lost contact for the moment, but get back on the long descent.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/PCM0008.jpg

At the end of the descent there is the 2nd intermediate sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Hirschi wins it ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Dyrnes and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/brs.png Vendrame.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/PCM0009.jpg

We have a flatter cat 3. climb next and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Hayter powers through to win it. That's 16 pts for him, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Hirschi comes 2nd and that brings his total to 17 pts, making him the current KOM leader. The gap to the peloton is still around 3 minutes with over 70 km left of the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/PCM0010.jpg

The breakaway is approaching the last intermediate sprint, but our focus is on the peloton or what is left of it. There's been a split. We have a front group of 45 rider with most of the favourites and the a larger group of 88 including some bigger name like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Rodrigues and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gcn.png Carapaz.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/PCM0011.jpg

The peloton is back together, but we saw some strong riders having to put in efforts to bring this together. The terrain is bumpy and if you lose position you will lose contact. 30 km as we see the back of the peloton which looks like it could break again at any moment.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/PCM0012.jpg

Mayhem!! The puncheur are trying to make this difficult and we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Lutsenko and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Sagan at the front. They have broken the group to only 23 riders with 25 km to go. The group behind them contains pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Rodrigues, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Slagter, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Ranaweera and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Tvetcov. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gcn.png Carapaz and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Henao Montoya and in the 3rd group that is around a minute behind the favourites.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/PCM0013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Lutsenko keeps pushing the pace and he's getting some help from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ino.png Jensen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Gidich as they've pretty much caught the last of the breakaway riders. 16 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/PCM0014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Olivier makes a move now on the cat. 4 climb with 14 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/PCM0015.jpg

1 km to the top of the KOM. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Waeytens is chasing working for his leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Choi, but we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Chiarello and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Bennett struggling at the back of this group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/PCM0016.jpg

Those two blow up by the top of the KOM as does pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Gesink who is just ahead of them. Duolingo still have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Borges in the front group though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/PCM0017.jpg

This move by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Olivier isn't really going anywhere. The other favourites are working together and are just behind him. 11 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/PCM0018.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aab.png Monsalve made the final effort to bring things back together as they go into the final climb. There is a small descent and flat finish after the climb. We also see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Borges has gotten team orders to go back and help his leader minimize his losses today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/PCM0019.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Choi doesn't waste much time and puts in an acceleration. Everyone can follow as the last domestiques and breakaway leftovers are distanced.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/PCM0020.jpg

No one has cracked here and we even see those riders from the breakaway which are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Dyrnes and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Nepomnyachsniy making their way back along with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Waeytens and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Ackermann who have both been doing excellent work for their leaders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/PCM0021.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin now puts in a dig at the end of the KOM. 3 km to go, exciting racing!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/PCM0022.jpg

Oh no! That last acceleration has dropped the puncheurs pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Lutsenko, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ino.png Jensen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Sagan and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Gidich have all lost contact. They must have done too much work earlier.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/PCM0023.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin leading under the flamme rouge we have all the big favourites here including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Carthy who's had an excellent ride.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/PCM0024.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Choi with less than 400 m to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/PCM0025.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Choi looks like he had in the end as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin ran out of gas, but on the inside line was pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Wellens who just pipped him for the win!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Choi has to settle for 2nd and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Carthy manages to finish 3rd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aab.png Monsalve is 4th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin 5th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Schelling 6th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Olivier 7th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Lutsenko brings in the puncheurs in 8th and the judges are generous with the time gaps as they get the same time as the winner.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/PCM0026.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Gesink comes in 1'42'' later which is a big blow to his GC hopes. Behind we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Chiarello and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Bennett who also had a bad day, but at least get the same treatment from the judges and get the same gap as Gesink.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/PCM0027.jpg

The even bigger losers today are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Ranaweera and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Rodrigues who lost 2'38'' today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Tim Wellens is new GC leader and he is also the points leader. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Hirschi is new KOM leader, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Gidich takes over the best young rider jersey.
