Todays stage is the climb onto Willunga Hill. Often this route has changed from one climbs to two climbs, top finish, downhill/flat section finish.
The most difficult on paper is the one we have again this season with a double climb and then a top finish, which favours the puncheurs. And despite not being the hardest climb and basically being a flat stage other than those sections, sprinters usually not losing too much time here neither.
Top favourites therefore are some punchy sprinters such as Van Stayen or Ackermann alongside the top puncheurs where Ponzi and Borges looked strongest so far.
For Skujins or McCarthy it likely is a chance to improve after having failed yesterday.
Maybe the strongest breakaway so far including some decent puncheurs.
Gaudu
Watson
Dieteren
Mosca
Thiery
Ssabagwanya
Sulvaran
Podium Ambition, cycleYorkshire, Tryg, Carrefour and Sauber mainly working behind. So teams of those leaders that are far behind right now, seem to plan something today.
25km left and we start the first Old Willunga Hill Road passing. Gaudu só far looks strongest and takes over the lead. 90s later the peloton is joining the uphill fun with Sauber, Tryg, Red Bull Zalgiris and Kraftwerk showing up.
Gaudu, Thiery and Ssabagwanya take the points at the top. 6-4-2 which means that they won`t be of a big danger to Borges.
With the flat section slowly coming to an end here before the final climb, the gap is down to 40s. Still quite a bit to close.
Pellaud, Hayter, Sleen or Alaphilippe are working now to bring their leaders into position and the gap actually went down quickly.
3km left and almost no more advantage.
Most GC riders, puncheurs and sprinters are in the first rows. Some like Ewan very far up just like Van Stayen, some others a bit later such as Manninen in around ~25th position.
2,4km and still Pellaud keeping the pace very steady. Not really to the favour of the puncheurs as the pace is quite high and they don`t go for the attack, but very steady, so that not a lot of riders struggle too much.
Despite Podium Ambition is ambitious to bring Ewan into a good position, he starts to look exhausted in 6th position right now. Croers, who is putting the pace right now and reduces it a bit looking a lot better.
Then there is Betancourt and Skujins on the right, Müller and Bakelants behind them with Ponzi, McCarthy, Van Stayen next.
Prevar, Borges, Jensen, Van Garderen etc. all in around 15th position.
With Pellaud gone, Grossschartner is next to keep the pace high and steady. The support for Van Garderen is impressive and they haven`t even used Slagter yet. But the result isn`t really good.
a) Van Garderen should at one point attack or gap others and
b) the steady pace more helping the sprinters than the puncheurs.
Already 1,3km to the line and still no attacks and no gaps as Sauber is controlling it too much.
Great news for Ponzi obviously, who is not under a lot of pressure right now plus sitting nicely in 4th position. Ahead of him Betancourt and Skujins.
Croes, Bakelants and Müller following ahead of Borges, Jensen and then already Ewan and Van Stayen or Ackermann.
Next to the next puncheurs also sprinters such as Halvorsen or Manninen are still decently placed in the first 30-40 spots.
Behind the actual KoM the riders go around the corner and sprint for the win. Just 400m left and still no gaps.
Croes surprisingly still being up there having taken advantage from the shorter inner curve.
Then Betancourt and Skujins with Ponzi losing a bit contact.
It was close between those 3 but in the end Betancourt takes the win for Red Bull Zalgiris. Skujins surprisingly being beaten by Croes. Another random top performance by a Podium Ambition rider, who though is more than 8min behind in GC and not impacting the GC himself.
Bakelants outsprints Ponzi in the fight of the veterans for some bonus seconds with Ackermann, Müller and Jensen next.
Ewan actually in 12th, Van Stayen 15th and Manninen in 34th but most surprisingly no single gaps down there.
It was a big gamble as there was almost a gap around 25th position but it wasn`t supposed to be, so Manninen remains in the great GC position.
In the end an unfortunate stage for those that needed a gap really as mainly Sauber apparently did control it too much today.
