The famous Corkscrew stage Down Under. High speed downhill just to go into a steep uphill section afterwards with the finish coming after another downhill again.
It`s rewarded Cat.1 therefore leading to a chance for a new KoM leader today as Bisseger had a rather easy last 2 stages in that shirt.
As officials made it a flat rated stage, the bookies apparently didn`t look onto the profile and go for the sprinters, led by the better puncheurs Van Stayen and Ewan. First really seems to be made for that stage and could take a big win for his new team here.
Other than that the pure puncheurs must have a look onto the stage with Ponzi being the one with the biggest sprint advantage but Skujins, Van Garderen and McCarthy must be named of course.
4 riders in todays break. All of them being 2'30 behind in the GC.
Cepeda Hernandez
Tennant
Mosca
Bravo
Later two clearly the best puncheurs in there.
Carrefour and Podium Ambition the two main teams working right now. The top2 bookie favourites, let`s see how well Ewan is handling the Corkscrew then. His team at least really using the downhill section to keep all together and want to guarantee an early catch here it seems as it`s just 50s with 18km to go.
Though with 8km to go and the start of the climb, the quartet still have a bit of a gap. 2,8km on average 8 % with the middle and late part being the most difficult.
Most sprinters are in the first positions with Howard and Halvorsen actually right behind the 3 chasing riders. Many puncheurs as well in the mix with Van Stayen well placed but also Prevar, Ponzi, Van Garderen etc.
The first attack comes from Van Garderen. Behind him GC leader Manninen doesn`t want to give up easily and tries to follow whereas Borges kind of was expected to show himself again here. And also Van Stayen shows his ambitions and joins the move.
They quickly have passed the former breakaway but rather expected Manninen struggles to hold on and now looks rather exhausted dropping back to the peloton. Also Van Stayen did not go 100% now sitting next to him.
Only Van Garderen and Borges being a bit ahead now.
Borges takes the KoM ahead of Van Garderen. This means, the KoM lead for the Portuguese.
13s behind them a group of 6 has formed and opened a small gap to the rest of the peloton:
Van Stayen
Ponzi
Prevar
as puncheurs.
Mayer as support for Ewan actually having tried to control the gap.
Mosca, who somehow found second air after just being caught.
Manninen, who just trying to keep contact again but again struggles a bit having a few meters to them.
Manninen getting some support now though as Bilbao attacked and has joined him now. Will they make it in time to close the gap to the first group?
Missing are in especially Skujins, McCarthy, Schreurs, Bakelants, Betancourt, Jensen, Edmondson and all the sprinters. Those are in a group of 28 sitting 30s behind and ahead of a group of 147, where the biggest names are Guardini, Bonifazio, Coutinho, Haller or Pelucchi.
Indosat being the team to work behind now. Bolor-Erdene working for Howard right behind. Even when not making it back. Every second counts in this race if you want to get a decent GC position in the end. Cullaigh, Ewan, Van Asbroeck, Reinhardt, Halvorsen, Van der Sande, Afewerki, Nizzolo or Skujins/McCarthy sitting right behind.
Before the Flamme Rouge, the two first groups merged which means Van Garderen and Borges are caught by them. Good news for Van Stayen and Ponzi being the best sprinters there.
Mosca and Mayer still up there. Huge news for them. Though Mosca as said 2'30 down in GC won`t make a big jump, Mayer though being in the regular 50s group and is allowed to stay there as potential new GC rider for the team after first working for Ewan before.
Only 13s behind Manninen/Bilbao, so it might still be enough for him.
500m and we see Ponzi in the lead. Behind him Borges and Van Stayen and also Prevar making himself ready.
16s now for Manninen, can his fast sprint be enough to make the catch in time?
250m and Van Stayen struggles. Maybe his first attack did make him tired already?
Ponzi under attack by Borges now. Neither Prevar nor Van Garderen being as far up right now while Mayer and Mosca can`t repond really.
But the Italian makes it. He takes the stage and GC wise most important the 25 bonus seconds.
Borges following, same order as yesterday, which shows, those 2 might be strongest here but today no solo break rider ahead.
Van Stayen takes important bonus seconds, something he wasn`t able to to on flat stages so far.
Mayer surprisingly up to 4th today, big result, Van Garderen and Prevar behind him with Mosca at 7th. This actually even means the U25 lead for Podium Ambition!
Manninen at 8th including bonus seconds just 14s off. Great performance by him. Bilbao behind him. Though GC wise this still means a change. 3s in between Ponzi and Manninen with the Italian taking over.
Borges in 3rd ahead of Van Stayen now.
Then unshown, Reinhardt up to 10th winning the peloton sprint, 43s later is still not too bad for some to keep their top15 GC positions. Howard and Ewan next then. GC wise Halvorsen as first sprinter from that group in 9th ahead of Afewerki with Kragh Andersen, Cullaigh, Ewan just behind.
Main losers of todays stage the top puncheurs missing out that move such as Skujins, McCarthy, Schreurs, Jensen etc.
