Tour Down Under - Stage 3
roturn
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/TdU/mg21_tdu_03_PCM0163.jpg

The first of 2 hill stages this race with another flat rated hill stage in between.
Todays stage doesn`t look that difficult and has the main toughness on the final 5 kilomters. Depending on positioning, the sprinters might be able to hold on avoiding a lot of time loss here but the favourites clearly are the puncheurs.
Skujins, McCarthy, Van Garderen, Ponzi in especially as also Borges, who showed his skills in the TdU finishes in last two editions.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/TdU/mg21_tdu_03_PCM0167.jpg

A group of 9 riders, which aren`t too much of a danger GC wise are sent out early.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lpu.png Covi
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Sulvaran
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/akm.png Wohrer
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/voy.png Shirota

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aab.png Mosca
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aab.png Gesbert

Most interesting the last 2 as not only belonging to the better puncheurs in the group, but also being team mates, which obviously should help as also Lopez, one of the weaker rider but team mate of GC leader Manninen and this shows, that Los Pollos Hermanos might not want to spend energy today in the chasing and instead let others work.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/TdU/mg21_tdu_03_PCM0178.jpg

So who is working?
Duolingo obviously for Borges.
Popo4ever for Prevar (as also Ackermann after losing time already is working).
UBS for Ponzi
Red Bull Zalgiris for Betancourt (or Halvorsen?)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/TdU/mg21_tdu_03_PCM0190.jpg

Basically the majority of todays stage can be summarized like this:
Breakaway worked well until 5km to go. Peloton though came closer and closer.

So with 4km to go and it being a 50:50 decision between them and the main field, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aab.png Gesbert attacks.
Sulvaran and Wohrer trying to follow but they have a gap already. The peloton 40s behind them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/TdU/mg21_tdu_03_PCM0194.jpg

And just when the climb on Torrens Hell Road starts and as you can see, the early parts are most difficult until the steepest part at half time and then a rather easy second half, the first attack.
It`s Indosat`s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ino.png Jensen. He consistency improved in the last couple years but so far did not have the biggest palmares. Maybe today he can take a big win for his new team. The break and also Gesbert not far ahead but also just 1,8km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/TdU/mg21_tdu_03_PCM0196.jpg

Behind him Carrefour has taken over. Due to their depth advantage, which only UBS could match, this makes sense.

Though TdU legend Gautier not there really, it`s their two leaders Bakelants and Van Stayen.

Then already Ponzi ahead of the strong Popo4ever trio Prevar/Gladysh/Budyak.

Borges, Skujins, Van Garderen, Bilbao, De Plus, Schreurs, McCarthy, Müller, Gebrezgabihier, Reichenbach, Betancourt, Gaudu, Siskevicius.

But the later the name, the further behind in the bunch actually.

Easy to see though that none of the top sprinters is in the first 20 positions and also missing are the Brits. Edmondson a bit behind those and also Dowsett later on.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/TdU/mg21_tdu_03_PCM0210.jpg

The last kilometer and it`s still steep but soon going to flatten.

Gesbert is the last rider ahead of the top puncheurs. Just 20s though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/TdU/mg21_tdu_03_PCM0212.jpg

Van Stayen can`t follow the pace set by his team mate Bakelants, who still is in the lead and now having caught Jensen!

Ponzi right behind followed by Borges and Prevar.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/TdU/mg21_tdu_03_PCM0216.jpg

Skujins surprisingly dropped a bit sitting in ~15th position only and this way no easy moving forward anymore.
Also McCarthy next to him not ideally placed and Van Garderen even 1-2 rows behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/TdU/mg21_tdu_03_PCM0220.jpg

Ponzi as probably biggest name on the startlist shows his skills despite his age. He accelerates and immediately small gaps open up. Only riders able to follow are Bakelants and Borges!

Prevar, Betancourt, Jensen, Van Stayen lead the next group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/TdU/mg21_tdu_03_PCM0225.jpg

Gesbert still leading but the pace behind is a lot higher!
High enough for Bakelants to capitulate. It`s Gesbert vs. the duo Ponzi/Borges, where later is now attacking trying to outsprint the Italian.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/TdU/mg21_tdu_03_PCM0227.jpg

But Gesbert has it. Knowing it`s just a couple meters left and seeing the small gap behind, he has time to celebrate. Big big win for Assa Abloy, in fact one of the most successful teams (under new name) here, despite not having Guarnieri here again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/TdU/mg21_tdu_03_PCM0229.jpg

Ponzi is the more complete rider and better sprinter and shows this. He stays ahead of Borges while behind some fast riders close the gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/TdU/mg21_tdu_03_PCM0232.jpg

Actually it`s Skujins! From far behind he had the fastest finish by far and taking care of no time gaps for Ponzi/Borges plus taking a few bonus seconds as well.

Bakelants, McCarthy, Prevar, Shirota next for the small bonuses.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/TdU/mg21_tdu_03_PCM0235.jpg

De Plus then stops the first 19 to get a time gap as he is just in between Gaudu and Teuns as gap breaker.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/TdU/mg21_tdu_03_PCM0237.jpg

And this continues with any small gap later on. In fact Manninen himself with a late push avoids a gap to be given with Asgreen ahead of him.

This means, the sprinter remains in the GC lead despite missing the top100 today! Not sure this was expected but they entered the final 3km too fast for big gaps to open. With bonus seconds though Ponzi moved up to 5th, Borges 8th and Skujins 9th mixing the sprinters a bit.
