Tour Down Under - Stage 1
roturn
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/TdU/mg21_tdu_01_PCM0001.jpg

Stage 1 of the Tour Down Under starts with a sprinter stage. There is a late Cat.2 mountain, but those aren`t the most difficult here and shouldn`t bring many sprinters into trouble.
The beginning as well one of the harder parts and seeing it`s the time of high speed breakaway forming, it surely could see some having a tough time early on already.

Other than that the Aussies clearly hope for a home win. With pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/t3a.png Ewan and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ino.png Howard chances couldn`t be much better. Though pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lph.png Manninen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Van Stayen as also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Guardini and couple more will try to get started with a win as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/TdU/mg21_tdu_01_PCM0004.jpg

One team clearly decided to go the breakaway tactic here despite having a pretty decent sprinter, who on paper doesn`t look fastest, but in reality last season scored lots of points, in especially in higher rated HC races. Obviously talking about pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Reinhardt, who always seems to find the perfect wheel and has a great finish in the end. Though they are allowed to let other teams work and instead go into the break.

Today even with 2 riders in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Tediashvili and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Bissegger while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/akm.png Hansen is the only other rider from Aker and on paper the strongest as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/TdU/mg21_tdu_01_PCM0008.jpg

The Dane showing this as well. Eventhough Bissegger was getting some support by his team mate Hansen is taking the early sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/TdU/mg21_tdu_01_PCM0012.jpg

And same goes for the 2nd sprint. Maximum points and bonus seconds for the Danish alrounder.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/TdU/mg21_tdu_01_PCM0016.jpg

This was as well the last time pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Tediashvili saw his companions as he couldn`t make it back to them and is now caught by the peloton.

A lot of work is done by Podium Ambition for Ewan, Binance for Guardini and Indosat for Howard.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/TdU/mg21_tdu_01_PCM0024.jpg

The remaining duo is still getting to the KoM sprint ahead of the peloton and for the first time Hansen is beaten, which means pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Bissegger will be the first KoM leader after todays stage.

Climber Valls was doing most work at the front on the peloton and also taking some points with Mayer and Yates being the last to grab some points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/TdU/mg21_tdu_01_PCM0029.jpg

Hansen with ~17km and Bissegger actually another 10km later are caught. So 7km left for the sprinter teams to organize themselves.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/TdU/mg21_tdu_01_PCM0031.jpg

UBS though has different plans and the sprinter teams clearly not liking this as their star cobbler pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Spengler attacks with 4km to go. With 3 top puncheurs, one cobbler and no sprinter, they try to surprise here on flat ground.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/TdU/mg21_tdu_01_PCM0035.jpg

It wasn`t successful though as the sprinter teams organized quite well, though they clearly have spent more energy with their first rider than hoped.

The three most working teams also have formed their sprint trains today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/TdU/mg21_tdu_01_PCM0052.jpg

The high pace lately did lead to a split in the peloton. Around half of all riders are in a second group. By a quick look the main GC riders and sprinters are all on hte save side, but some notable riders behind and actually working themselves now trying to make it back:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Bellis
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Hoelgaard
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Siskevicius

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Asgreen

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/TdU/mg21_tdu_01_PCM0062.jpg

With 2km to go the sprinters really go for it and hard to see them closing the gap again behind due to the high pace.

Page now moving ahead of Howard as last leadout while Guardini still has 2 riders ahead.

Podium Ambition looking a bit unorganized but now Edmondson moved up into the first spot with Alaphilippe trying to follow him with Ewan and Manninen behind.

Most riders though decided to move over to the Guardini train.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/TdU/mg21_tdu_01_PCM0066.jpg

1,6km to go and it`s the moment where Gabburo has finished his job. Silva now starting as last leadout for Guardini while Page already has done lots of work.
Edmondson as well doing great here but he is almost too fast for Alaphilippe, who is a lot in the wind himself and not following well.

Reinhardt as sole sprinter in the middle behind Howard and for some reason also Gebrezgabihier in between as well as puncheur.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/TdU/mg21_tdu_01_PCM0071.jpg

Flamme Rouge and Indosat kind of collapses. Podium Ambition finally looking good with Alaphilippe going into the lead but how long can he still hold it?
Manninen dangerously sitting behind.

Next to Reinhardt, who is behind Howard the only sprinters left on the other side are Silva with Guardini as Haller lost contact and ruined the sprint for most others it seems. Halvorsen and Nizzolo the fastest behind now but with a notable gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/TdU/mg21_tdu_01_PCM0082.jpg

700m and Ewan in the win! A long sprint for him and same for Howard, who still is up there but also passed by Manninen as well now and attacked by Reinhardt.

Guardini had the longest leadout and only goes into the wind now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/TdU/mg21_tdu_01_PCM0086.jpg

Howard is done! Reinhardt and Guardini having a gap to the top2, which are Ewan vs Manninen now.

Halvorsen, Van Asbroeck, Nizzolo all passing Howard now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/TdU/mg21_tdu_01_PCM0091.jpg

But with 200m to go it`s definitely about those 2. Their gap is big enough and question is if Ewan can defend the small lead. Manninen already was one of the best sprinters 2020 and looking a tad faster now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/TdU/mg21_tdu_01_PCM0093.jpg

And indeed he in the end easily takes the win for Los Pollos Hermanos, who seem to have found a big sprint leader there this offseason.

Ewan takes 2nd whil ethe fight for 3rd is still on.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/HC/TdU/mg21_tdu_01_PCM0095.jpg

Halvorsen takes it for his new Red Bull Zalgiris team and showing his potential here as newly maxed rider.

Veteran Nizzolo behind in 4th ahead of Van Asbroeck and Afewerki, then already last years GC winner Van der Sande and Kragh Andersen, who are the last to gain bonus seconds!

Guardini and Reinhardt dropped out of the top8 in the very end just like Cullaigh, Liu behind with Howard in 14th only beaten by Coutinho as well.

Even worse day for Van Stayen in 19th, who never really showed up fully, which obviously is good news for all puncheurs, who wouldn`t like to see him getting sprint bonus seconds as well.

The second peloton in the end losing around 2min which means, those riders likely will go for breakaways now instead of the GC.
