Tour of Tasmania - Stage 1

Stage Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/profile.jpg

Time for the PT season opener as well. The Tour of Tasmania takes over that position on the calendar now. Stage 1 is a sprint stage that features two intermediate sprints and two KOMs to get that competition rolling. Let's start the race!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/PCM0001.jpg

The early move for the breakaway comes from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Kurianov. He is followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Goldstein.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/PCM0002.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Kanerva and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Herregodts are trying to get away as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/PCM0003.jpg

The latter two were shut down, so now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Christensen tries his luck, but it seems he's not getting anywhere also.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/PCM0004.jpg

It seems we will have only 2 men in the breakaway today. Interestingly we don't see a big fight between them for the first KOM points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Kurianov takes 6 ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Goldstein. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Stannard gets the last two from the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/PCM0005.jpg

We see more of a contest for the sprint points, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Kurianov is much the better sprinter and easily takes maximum points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png de Kleijn mops up the remaining points from the peloton that is only 2'17'' behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/PCM0006.jpg

There is almost 50 km to next KOM and we again see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Kurianov rolling through it. The Russian will wear the jersey tomorrow. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Miltiadis takes the final 2 points from the peloton that has slowed down a bit and is 4 minutes behind the escapees. 124 km remaining.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/PCM0007.jpg

The final intermediate sprint follows shortly after and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Kurianov again asserts himself and takes the 6 pts on offer. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Ferreyra is the first to roll through in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/PCM0008.jpg

We take another break and come back with 60 km remaining. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Festina, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Aegon and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png ISA are taking up chasing duties for the three big sprinters. They've reduced the gap to 2'21''.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/PCM0009.jpg

30 km to go now, the gap is just over a minute as we see the peloton stretched a bit at the front. They have a short descent before the final flat part and the finish is on a slight downhill as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/PCM0010.jpg

The catch of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Kurianov is made under the 10 km banner as we see the sprinter teams ramping things up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/PCM0011.jpg

Going into the final 3 km we see trains starting to form. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Festina for Coquard on the left and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Aegon for Groenewegen on the right. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Kalaba and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Enger are in the picture looking to follow, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb is slightly more back out of the picture for now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/PCM0012.jpg

This is the situation with 2 km to go. Festina has hit the front with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Lecuisinier no less, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Farantakis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Coquard.

Aegon has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Barbin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png de Kleijn in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Kalaba, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Enger, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Yates and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Bertilsson are trying to follow the wheels.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/PCM0013.jpg

The lead sprinters are released in the final km. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Coquard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Enger are in the front row.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/PCM0014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen still in front with 500 m to go, he has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Kalaba in his wheel. Next is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Coquard followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi. Alongside them is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Enger.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/PCM0015.jpg

Less than 300 m to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen still in front. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Kalaba has now moved out of his wheel and is moving up on the left. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Coquard still in 2nd and on the far right we finally see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb who is trying to salvage something from his poor starting position.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/PCM0016.jpg

Oh boy! You want some early season controversy? pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Coquard raises his hands in victory, although it's clear to see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Kalaba finished ahead of him. We have to wait for the judges and the official results.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/PCM0017.jpg

Yes, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Coquard is given the victory! Not sure how, but his celebration is warranted. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen is 2nd and funnily pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Enger is in 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Kalaba then in 4th. Minions can be happy they're just here on a wildcard. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi is 5th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Yates 6th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Bertilsson in 7th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Rowe 8th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb only 9th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Holloway rounds out the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Coquard takes the lead in the GC and points competition. The latter will be worn by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Kurianov will wear the KOM jersey and as he's also the leader in the U25 ranking he will lend that shirt to his breakaway companion pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Goldstein.
