African Time Trial Championships 2021

For the African Time Trial Champs, we've moved to Namibia for the frequently used course around Windhoek.

There is no standout favourite in the field. South African contenders include Janse van Rensburg, Van Niekerk and De Bod. Tanzanian Laizer, Hamza of Algeria, Kiflay of Eritrea, and Hussein of Kenya.

South Africa and Eritrea are the only nations able to field 8 riders, while Mauritius have 5. These nations dominate the early starters, and the South African and Eritrean riders take a sweep of the standings at this stage.

Morne van Niekerk with the fastest time.

Johann van Zyl and Byron Munton with good times as well.

Merhawi Kudus had been 4th after the first couple of checks, but finished strongly to move ahead of Van Zyl and Munton and into 2nd place.

Into the later stages, we have the penultimate South African De Bod, Chokri, Andriafenomananiaina, Kireva

Hussein, Kiflay and Hamza.

And finally Laizer and Janse van Rensburg.

All through the first check and Van Niekerk's time is still holding up as fastest.

But the times of all these strong time triallists are fadng rapidly away come the 2nd checkpoint.

It is evident that conditions significantly favoured the early starters, which is fantastic news for Morne van Niekerk, who becomes the African champion.

The rest of the Top 5 is then quite unexpected, with Kudus 2nd, Van Zyl 3rd, Munton 4th and Teklehaimanot is 5th. Janse van Rensburg the best of the late starters in 6th.

De Bod 8th, and the rest of the Top 10 all early starters too - Meintjes 7th, Habtemichael 9th and Tesfom 10th.
