Team building strategies

Hi folks!

Just curious, how do you set up your team for, let's say a Tour, Giro, Vuelta or so?

Do you pick riders that suits all terrains:

1 ST
3 CL
1 TT
1 PU
1 SP
1 CO (if necessary)

Or do you go Euskaltel?

1 ST
8 CL

Or a more balanced approach?

SP
TT
TT

How many domestiques/helpers do you put on your team?
I find it interresting to see all the different strategies to team building.

In real life som teams focusing on the green jersey, other on breakaways and stage wins, other teams just on the GC.

What's your approach in stage races and how do you build your team? Smile

Well it depends on how much money you have, what kind and how good riders you have under contract and what's your goal with them. In any case, the class of a rider doesn't matter at all. Only their attributes do.

If you have somebody like a Pogacar or a Bernal, so a top top favourite, then you have to bring 2 guys for the flat, and your best climbers to help him. No sprinters, because you're either spreading yourself thin or you can't help them enough.

But if you have someone like Mas, Buchmann etc. then it's unlikely that you'll be able to do more than just try to hang with the top guys. So in that case you can bring riders to try and snipe stages or bring a sprinter (and his leadout).

And if you don't have a climber like that, then you should forget about GC and focus on stages. Sprinters, time trialists, punchers, whatever you have.

It basically depends on your riders and your objectives.
In my case for some races I have a strong leader and a good sprinter so I can try to win both kind of stages. On those cases I pick 2x sprinters (one leader and one for the train), 2x good climbers + the leader and the rest are team-mates they can help on climbings or even on sprint trains. They also can try to win a stage on smaller groups.

If your leader is not that strong better try to protect him and not to bring sprinters
