Welcome to the 3rd event of the 2020 World Championships, the U23 Time Trial. 46 riders on the start list today.
Tom Wirtgen is the defending champion but he won’t be back. The favorites to replace him are:
The first rider on the course is Eeenkhorn but he isn’t the first to finish as he is passed on the course by his two- minute man, young American phenom, McNulty. The American’s time at the finish is 58’33, and with 16 riders through the first check only one rider has surpassed him there, Rikunov.
But Storer makes up just enough time on McNulty to seize the lead at the finish, he is up 1 second.
Based on split times, Rikunov, should be the next man on the hot seat.
He does it, +0’24.
It doesn’t last long as Fung, riding for the Asia B squad takes the lead another 24 seconds up.
The next rider who was close at the intermediate check was Cabrera, he was 4 seconds up at the split and he holds on to lead by 11 seconds.
We are getting into the 2nd half of the riders now and times at the split are falling fast, but for now the lead at the finish is safe as Pogacar comes in 8 seconds behind.
But Gamper takes the hot seat soon after, +0’14 and is almost immediately replaced by Foss, who takes the lead by 2 seconds.
Then Erdenebat rides into the sunset with a new best time. He lowers the time by a massive 41 seconds.
There are only 5 riders left but 3 of them had strong times at the intermediate, all closely clustered around the Mongolian. The riders left on the course who are out of it are Conci and Bernal. Bernal follows up his disappointing Avenir with a poor showing here. He is over 40 seconds down already.
Next at the finish is Sajnok, he was 1 second behind Erdenebat at the intermediate.
And he is still 1 second behind at the finish.
Next up is Beniusis, he was ahead of Erdenebat by fractions at the time check.
And he drops a second in the second half and is now 3rd.
The times have been very similar from the split to the finish, which means the favorite has to be the last rider on the course, Mano, he took an 8 second lead at the intermediate.
And he does it, doubling his lead and winning the U23 Time Trial by 17 seconds for Asia A. Asia B takes second with Erdenebat and Poland third with Sajnok. More evidence for the internationalization of cycling as a Thai and Mongolian take Gold and Silver in the U23 Time Trial.
Stage Results
(apologize for the lack of time gaps, there was an issue with stage set up so they exported wrong, sequence is fine).
