Race Report, Stage 3

Stage 3 of the Herald Sun Tour is another sprint day, the longest yet, 172k from Bendigo – Nagambie. Again, some bumps along the way so the paper favorites are the punchier sprinters. But only a single categorized climb, a 3rd category, so that jersey can’t change hands today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Herald/S3/favs.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Hirschi seems to want to hold on to the White Jersey for another day so he attacks as the flag drops. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Froidevaux goes with him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Herald/S3/01.jpg

Those two are over a minute ahead when there are a second round of attacks from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Kuznetsov. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Palini, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Savini. More riders are attacking behind but the peloton is reacting.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Herald/S3/02.jpg

Another trio do a get a gap: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Hoehn, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Katrasnik, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Lucca. But the sprint teams are chasing, they can’t be happy with a rider like Katrasnik up the road.

And with 17k gone all the breakaway riders are brought back and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Palini immediately counters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Herald/S3/03.jpg

He is joined by a selection of the original attackers, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Froidevaux, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Savini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Hoehn, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Kuznetsov.

With 140k to go they are all together and have a lead of 2’16. This appears to be the break of the day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Herald/S3/04.jpg

At the KOM pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Kuznetsov takes maximum points without objection from the others. He will need to be in the break again on Stage 5 if he wants to make up his 6-point deficit to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Janse van Rensburg in that competition.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Herald/S3/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Kuznetsov also takes the first sprint, with the break splitting up behind him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Herald/S3/06.jpg

With 100km to go they are back together and the lead is 2’45, but they are all looking tired. Behind the wind is blowing at 35k and there are some signs the peloton might split.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Herald/S3/07.jpg

At the next sprint pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Kuznetsov again wins, ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Palini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Froidevaux.

The peloton is 53 seconds behind. It has been splitting and reforming, currently a 23-rider group is 1’56 behind. The group doesn’t include any major TT riders or sprinters other than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Ford, who has already lost time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Herald/S3/08.jpg

46km to go (route finishes in a loop, so ignore the 20k banner) and 7km to the last sprint point and the breakaway is caught. The dropped riders are still almost 2 minutes adrift.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Herald/S3/09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Scully does his best sprint of the race to take the last sprint point ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Sanikwathi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Berger. 32k to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Herald/S3/10.jpg

After the sprint point the pace eases and nearly all the dropped riders rejoin.

9km to go, Bralirwa and BNZ driving on the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Herald/S3/11.jpg

1.7 km to go, the hard pace and the wind have taken their toll, many of the sprinters are poorly placed. Up front on the left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Naesen leads pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Bouhanni and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Berger while on the right pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Feiereisen leads pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Coutinho and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Selig. The others will need to negotiate some traffic.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Herald/S3/12.jpg

And indeed under the 1k banner those 6 have a gap and are joined only by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Li, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Canola, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Mudgway. Li is one of the TT favorites, can he grab some bonus seconds or a time gap today?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Herald/S3/13.jpg

500 meters and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Bouhanni hits the front. Behind, only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Planckaert is trying to bridge the gap, which seems like poor team tactics for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Li.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Herald/S3/14.jpg

300 meters, 6 across the road but the 3 strongest sprinters are the 3 on the left - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Coutinho, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Bouhanni and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Selig.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Herald/S3/15.jpg

100 meters, it looks like either pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Coutinho or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Bouhanni will be getting his second win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Herald/S3/16.jpg

It is going to some technology to separate them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Herald/S3/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Coutinho is determined to have just edged ahead on the line for his second stage. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Selig third. Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Li, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Berger, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Canola, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Naesen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Mudgway, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Feiereisen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Planckaert grabs 10th but no gaps are awarded.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Herald/S3/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Coutinho now holds a 54 second lead over the best placed rider with no time bonuses - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Li. But neither he nor any of the other riders with time bonuses are likely to hold their positions tomorrow as none are strong in the TT. Li’s adventures today do mean he will be the last strong TT rider to start, which can be an advantage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Coutinho also has a 27 point lead for the points jersey which looks likely to end up on his shoulders. The Young Rider and Mountain leaders remain unchanged.
