Race Report, Stage 2

Stage 2 of the Herald Sun Tour is 158kms from Mt. Macedon to Bendigo. It features two category 2 climbs which represent the biggest haul of mountain points on any stage. Because of this climbing the favorites are again the punchy sprinters. Perhaps it will work better for them today than yesterday.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.pngCoutinho enters the day as the race leader.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Herald/S2/favs.jpg

The first KOM is just 14km into the stage so more riders interested early today. The first group on the road are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Hulgaard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Hoehn, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Janse van Rensburg, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Lucca. The next three are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Brunel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Van den Berg, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Iversen. More riders trying to escape the peloton behind that.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Herald/S2/01.jpg

BNZ weren’t happy with that break though and as the riders start the first Cat 2 the race is back together.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Herald/S2/02.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Hulgaard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Janse van Rensburg and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Van den Berg try again, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Hoehn, and a new player, in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Kuznetsov.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Herald/S2/03.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Janse van Rensburg is clearly the best climber among the break and with 1k to the top of the climb he had dropped the others. Peloton at 2’13.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Herald/S2/04.jpg

At the top pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Janse van Rensburg crosses in first and then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Kuznetsov powers up the final 500 meters to grab second ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Van den Berg, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Hoehn and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Hulgaard.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Herald/S2/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Thorsen already dropped in the peloton.

By the first sprint point the break is all back together and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Kuznetsov proves he is the fastest. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Janse van Rensburg 2nd, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Hoehn 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Herald/S2/06.jpg

The gap has been hovering around 2 minutes, again the sprinters not interested in letting the break get a big lead. The weather is once again miserable.

The early racing proves too hard for much of the break and with 93 km to and 13km to the second KOM only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Kuznetsov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Janse van Rensburg left at the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Herald/S2/07.jpg

Early in the climb pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Kuznetsov drops pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Janse van Rensburg but the Europcar rider claws his way back and then returns the favor. With 3km to climb he has a 20 second lead. All the others are back in the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Herald/S2/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Janse van Rensburg holds on for first just ahead of the peloton where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Lafay grabs second.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Herald/S2/09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Janse van Rensburg has what could be a race winning total of 20 KOM points, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Lafay’s alert move has him in 2nd on 12 points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Janse van Rensburg is caught soon after but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Palini attacks and establishes a 37 second lead over the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Herald/S2/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Palini’s lead maxes out at 45 seconds but with 45 k to go he is brought back. After a brief attack from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Brown is snuffed out, the peloton is all together except for a handful of dropped riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Herald/S2/11.jpg

With the race together the sprinters can contest the sprint point with 30km to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Te Brake, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Wippert then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Coutinho is the order over the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Herald/S2/12.jpg

The next action is the sprint finish, with 1.4k to go Bralirwa is the best organized in the middle of the road with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Hadi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Naesen, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Selig. On the right pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Feiereisen leads pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Coutinho. To the left of Bralirwa pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Kuznetsov leads pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Bouhanni, trying to make up for his no show yesterday. BNZ’s sprint train is again disjointed with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Mudgway on the right, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Wippert in the middle and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Von Hoff is on the left. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Scully, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Manarelli, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Mezgec, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Sanikwathi, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Boev are all positioned behind the trains with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Te Brake a bit further back. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Berger has a good position up front for Eddie Stobart but he is losing speed.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Herald/S2/13.jpg

Under the 1k banner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Feiereisen pulls pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Coutinho into a strong position on the right. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Mudgway is blocking pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Selig a little in the middle and the German has lost pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Naesen’s wheel. In the center pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Bouhanni is about to launch and on the left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Wippert has found pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Von Hoff.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Herald/S2/14.jpg

700 meters and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Feiereisen still leading pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Coutinho. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Bouhanni closest but he has been in the wind a while.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Herald/S2/15.jpg

400 meters pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Bouhanni leads, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Coutinho just behind, did he leave it too late to launch? pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Naesen still going in the middle, the next row left to right is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Wippert, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Mezgec, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Manarelli, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Selig, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Sanikwathi

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Herald/S2/16.jpg

200 meters, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Bouhanni still leading, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Coutinho seems unable to find another gear. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Selig on the right and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Mezgec in the center closing fastest.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Herald/S2/17.jpg

100 meters, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Bouhanni hanging on.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Herald/S2/18.jpg

A great sprint by the Strava rider and he wins it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Herald/S2/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Coutinho can’t finish another great lead out but he takes 2nd and will retain both the points and GC lead. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Mezgec 3rd, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Selig, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Wippert, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Sanikwathi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Manarelli take 4th to 7th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Kuznetsov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Ignatiev and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Scully complete the top 10.

No notable time losses but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Thorsen misses the time cut.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Hirschi retains the Young riders lead.
