The first mountain stage has been crucial in shaping the current GC placings. The climbs aren't as brutal as on stage 3, but there is plenty of elevation over almost 195 km, which also makes it the longest stage of the race. Will we see some of the losers from stage 3 going on the offensive today?
A big breakaway today might not be a surprise as we see Munoz, Kiriakidis, Bol and Urcelay getting an early start.
Goh followed by Lavric are next.
Plenty more riders are coming across now as the peloton seems willing to let them go. We'll wait for things to settle and see who is where.
The riders have just gone past the first sprint point and well, I was saying big breakaway, but this is ridiculous. Or maybe not, but we have a total of 24 riders here:
Urcelay Munoz Thurau Aular Kennaugh Lavric Ignatenko Serrano Rochas Kiriakidis Laengen Zakarin Zoidl Lastra Bol Mamykin Krignaum Wohrer Chernetskiy Lammertink Kunshin Goh Fouquet Ekibe
The breakaway is over the top of the first KOM of the day. A few of the riders were interested in those points as Goh won the sprint ahead of Kunshin and Urcelay. The peloton are over 10 minutes behind now so Laengen is actually the virtual leader at the moment!
We have a look in the peloton now as they start the long gradual ascent to the cat. 2 KOM. We see there are mostly sprinters and rouleurs working at the front which might explain the slow pace and huge gap the breakaway has opened up. We have lost Lavric, Ignatenko and Munoz on this climb. The peloton is still 8 minutes behind, 95 km of the stage remaining.
At the 2nd KOM we again have Goh who is clearly the most interested in these pts as he wins 10 more.
Still not too much urgency in the peloton really. Aegon and Fablok really haven't shown much so far. The gap stands at 7'25'' with 67 km to go. It might be early to say, but the breakaway is looking good.
Here we see Kiriakidis and Ekibe behind him, both about to be absorbed by the peloton. Both have worked for their teammates in the breakaway so their jobs are done. The peloton 6'20'' behind so Laengen is still, just barely, the virtual leader of the race.
Thurau is also done for today as the riders hit the steeper section of the penultimate climb. Their advantage has been reduced to under 5 minutes.
Fouquet and Chernetskiy are the next to lose the wheel as the group of breakaway riders is really breaking up on this cat. 2 climb.
We have 10 riders coming over the top in the first group. Kennaugh takes the KOM points but the following riders remaining must be looking at only a stage win now as they still have more than 4 minutes advantage:
Kennaugh
Zoidl
Aular
Goh
Zakarin
Kunshin
Wohrer
Urcelay
Bol
Lammertink
We start the final climb and Zoidl doesn't waste any time and attacks. He is followed by Lammertink. The battle for the stage victory is on!
Zoidl puts in another small acceleration and shakes off Lammertink. There are still 7.5 km to the top and the others are going at a more moderate pace.
5 km to the top, Zoidl is working at his pace now and it's enough to maintain the gap.
Well that move backfired on the Austrian as he got caught 3 km from the top. Who will make the next move?
No one, it seems we're going to see a sprint finish as all the 10 riders that started the final climb are here.
600 m left, we see an increase of pace now. Zakarin is the furthest up and he is the best puncheur in this group.
And indeed the Russian Ilnur Zakarin wins it! So after 3 Aegon stage wins we now have 3 ISA - Hexacta stage wins. Real dominance shown by these two teams at this race!
Goh finishes 2nd with Kennaugh rounding out the podium in 3rd. After that it's Aular 4th, Kunshin 5th, Zoidl in 6th, Wohrer 7th and finally Urcelay 8th.
The favourites didn't produce any attacking riding today as they finished the stage together 2'38'' behind the winner's time. Everyone made the time limit which is another indication that today's stage wasn't ridden nearly as hard as stage 3. In the end nothing much changed in the GC apart from some of the minor places. The other jerseys also stay on the shoulders of their respective wearers for stage 7.
