Stage 3 is the first of the two big mountain stages. If the climbing yesterday was mostly restricted to the last part of the stage, then today is kinda the opposite. A big cat. 1 climb early on and 5 more climbs that follow. The finish though comes on a small hill after a long downhill. Punchy riders should again come to the fore.
First move of the day, it's Krigbaum again. He is followed by Pantano Gomez, current KOM leader Bol and Majoral. More riders have latched onto this group. We also have Hofstede, Stancu, Nikiema and Badilatti.
Behind them we have a 2nd breakaway group containing Schir, Zoidl, Stokbro and Tatarinov.
And we have a 3rd group also. Here we have Ponce, Panayotov, Kunshin and Reckweg.
The breakaway is now getting scattered all along this difficult category 1 climb. We see Zoidl, Nikiema and Hofstede as the latest who can't keep up with the pace.
We are on the top now and we see Stancu has emerged victorious on this climb as he takes 16 KOM pts. The other points go to Schir, Panayotov, Tatarinov, Badilatti, Kunshin and Pantano Gomez. KOM leader Bol had to let go before the summit, he won't be wearing that jersey tomorrow.
The next smaller climb follows soon after and Panayotov was best on it, followed by Kunshin and Schir. These front 7 riders are now around 2 minutes ahead of the peloton where the pace is not slow at all.
The escapees are now on the very steep cat. 2 climb. The riders repeat this climb again before the finish. We see Majoral is trying to come back to the front group, but he just can't quite reach them.
Stancu again proves to be the strongest climber here as he takes the 10 pts. The others go to Badilatti, Pantano Gomez, Tatarinov and Panayotov. The gap to the peloton is exactly 3 minutes.
The peloton are now on the long flat road between the two big climbing points of today's stage. We see many teams contributing to the pace making at the front. Majoral has now been re-absorbed by the peloton who are 2'17'' behind the breakaway.
The breakaway has started climbing the biggest test of the day now and they have only 1'15'' advantage. It seems their fun is soon to be over as the peloton looks to make a swift catch.
The riders are now on the steepest section of the climb. We have percentages of up to 20% and this section lasts for a few kilometers. Wellens though seems to feel good as he's at the front on the far side of the road.
Wellens is taking matters into his own hands. He's setting a hard pace, the breakaway has been caught and it's only a matter of time before this group falls to pieces.
It actually hasn't broken into pieces, but the strongest 3 riders are away! Wellens, Amador and race leader Olivier have a gap! Carthy tried to follow them, but he couldn't.
Wellens is really on good day as he's started distancing both Olivier and Amador now!. He already has 1'35'' on the bigger group behind! There is still 56 km of the stage remaining, does he want to go solo all the way?!
It's literally mano a mano here as Wellens has another 2 km from the top of the climb. Everyone seems to be on the limit right now.
Wellens crosses the KOM line 27'' ahead of Olivier and another 11'' ahead of Amador.
Carthy is the next man over the climb, but he's 1'21'' behind the leader. He does seem to be stronger than the rest though as the gap to those behind him is considerable.
Next we have the group of Oomen, Godoy, Berhane and Choi.
After them come Martin, Bennett, Pantano Gomez, Brambilla, Schir, De la Cruz and Stancu.
Gesink is further back in a group, he really seems to be having an off day.
The front 3 riders have joined forces now on the descent as they're looking to extend their gap over the others.
The leaders are on their way to the next category 3 climb. Wellens and Amador are the two doing the riding as Olivier is wisely just defending his position.
Behind them Carthy has fallen back to the Oomen group that has merged with Bennett's group. So 12 riders here in total as they look to claw back 1'23'' on the leaders. The Gesink group is a further 2'34'' behind them. 38 km left in the stage.
Mostly through the work of Wellens the leaders have now extended their gap to 3 minutes ahead of the rest as they cross the cat. 3 climb. A long descent now before the final hard climb of the day.
The leaders took it easier on the downhill as they start the last climb with a gap of 2'27'' over the group with Bennett and Oomen.
The others are getting closer now and  Olivier feels like it's time for an attack of his own!
He's opened up a gap of 22'', but there are still 17 km to go. It's a long way to go alone. The others are a further 1'15'' behind Wellens and Amador.
Wellens and Amador caught up on the flat with 6 km from the finish. Olivier immediately sits up.
This group is a much more cohesive unit and are working together. Less than 2 minutes behind the leaders they of course haven't given up the chase.
The leaders have nearly ground to a stop and the others are back in as we head for the final 3 km and the last ramp to the line.
Wellens now injects a bit of pace into the group as we enter the final 2 km.
Olivier has now taken pole position as the riders head under the flamme rouge. No one yet making the big the acceleration.
500 m to go, the pace is ratcheting up now. Olivier still in the best position with Wellens and Brambilla alongside him.
200 m left, Olivier is not losing ground, he's still in front.
And he does it again! Olivier wins the sprint, 2nd stage win for the Dutchman! 3 for 3 for Aegon!
Wellens has to settle for 2nd. He was so strong today, maybe he could have attacked later in the stage, but the certainly forced the issue today. Godoy finishes strong to complete the podium. After that it's Martin 4th, Brambilla 5th, Oomen 6th, Choi 7th and De la Cruz 8th.
Berhane was part of the chasing group, but ran out of legs on this final ramp and came in 48'' later.
The biggest loser today is undoubtedly Gesink as he came in a full 6 minutes after Olivier. You'd have to think his GC hopes are over.
So it's Daan Olivier that extends his lead in the GC to 28'' over Wellens and 32'' over Godoy. Wellens though is the KOM leader now, with Godoy taking over the young rider's jersey. 13 riders failed to finish the stage inside the time limit. Moser and Nizzolo are two sprinters who failed to make it.
