Tour du Maroc - Stage 3

Stage Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S3/profile.jpg

Stage 3 is the first of the two big mountain stages. If the climbing yesterday was mostly restricted to the last part of the stage, then today is kinda the opposite. A big cat. 1 climb early on and 5 more climbs that follow. The finish though comes on a small hill after a long downhill. Punchy riders should again come to the fore.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S3/PCM0001.jpg

First move of the day, it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Krigbaum again. He is followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gcn.png Pantano Gomez, current KOM leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Bol and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/and.png Majoral. More riders have latched onto this group. We also have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Hofstede, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Stancu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Nikiema and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Badilatti.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S3/PCM0002.jpg

Behind them we have a 2nd breakaway group containing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Schir, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Zoidl, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Stokbro and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Tatarinov.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S3/PCM0003.jpg

And we have a 3rd group also. Here we have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Ponce, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Panayotov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Kunshin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Reckweg.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S3/PCM0004.jpg

The breakaway is now getting scattered all along this difficult category 1 climb. We see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Zoidl, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Nikiema and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Hofstede as the latest who can't keep up with the pace.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S3/PCM0005.jpg

We are on the top now and we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Stancu has emerged victorious on this climb as he takes 16 KOM pts. The other points go to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Schir, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Panayotov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Tatarinov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Badilatti, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Kunshin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gcn.png Pantano Gomez. KOM leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Bol had to let go before the summit, he won't be wearing that jersey tomorrow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S3/PCM0006.jpg

The next smaller climb follows soon after and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Panayotov was best on it, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Kunshin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Schir. These front 7 riders are now around 2 minutes ahead of the peloton where the pace is not slow at all.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S3/PCM0007.jpg

The escapees are now on the very steep cat. 2 climb. The riders repeat this climb again before the finish. We see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/and.png Majoral is trying to come back to the front group, but he just can't quite reach them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S3/PCM0008.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Stancu again proves to be the strongest climber here as he takes the 10 pts. The others go to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Badilatti, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gcn.png Pantano Gomez, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Tatarinov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Panayotov. The gap to the peloton is exactly 3 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S3/PCM0009.jpg

The peloton are now on the long flat road between the two big climbing points of today's stage. We see many teams contributing to the pace making at the front. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/and.png Majoral has now been re-absorbed by the peloton who are 2'17'' behind the breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S3/PCM0010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S3/map.jpg

The breakaway has started climbing the biggest test of the day now and they have only 1'15'' advantage. It seems their fun is soon to be over as the peloton looks to make a swift catch.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S3/PCM0011.jpg

The riders are now on the steepest section of the climb. We have percentages of up to 20% and this section lasts for a few kilometers. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Wellens though seems to feel good as he's at the front on the far side of the road.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S3/PCM0012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Wellens is taking matters into his own hands. He's setting a hard pace, the breakaway has been caught and it's only a matter of time before this group falls to pieces.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S3/PCM0013.jpg

It actually hasn't broken into pieces, but the strongest 3 riders are away! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Wellens, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Amador and race leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Olivier have a gap! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fpc.png Carthy tried to follow them, but he couldn't.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S3/PCM0014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Wellens is really on good day as he's started distancing both pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Olivier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Amador now!. He already has 1'35'' on the bigger group behind! There is still 56 km of the stage remaining, does he want to go solo all the way?!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S3/PCM0015.jpg

It's literally mano a mano here as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Wellens has another 2 km from the top of the climb. Everyone seems to be on the limit right now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S3/PCM0016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Wellens crosses the KOM line 27'' ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Olivier and another 11'' ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Amador.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S3/PCM0017.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fpc.png Carthy is the next man over the climb, but he's 1'21'' behind the leader. He does seem to be stronger than the rest though as the gap to those behind him is considerable.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S3/PCM0018.jpg

Next we have the group of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Oomen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Godoy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Berhane and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Choi.

After them come pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Martin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Bennett, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gcn.png Pantano Gomez, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Brambilla, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Schir, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png De la Cruz and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Stancu.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Gesink is further back in a group, he really seems to be having an off day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S3/PCM0019.jpg

The front 3 riders have joined forces now on the descent as they're looking to extend their gap over the others.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S3/PCM0020.jpg

The leaders are on their way to the next category 3 climb. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Wellens and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Amador are the two doing the riding as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Olivier is wisely just defending his position.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S3/PCM0021.jpg

Behind them pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fpc.png Carthy has fallen back to the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Oomen group that has merged with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Bennett's group. So 12 riders here in total as they look to claw back 1'23'' on the leaders. The pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Gesink group is a further 2'34'' behind them. 38 km left in the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S3/PCM0022.jpg

Mostly through the work of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Wellens the leaders have now extended their gap to 3 minutes ahead of the rest as they cross the cat. 3 climb. A long descent now before the final hard climb of the day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S3/PCM0023.jpg

The leaders took it easier on the downhill as they start the last climb with a gap of 2'27'' over the group with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Bennett and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Oomen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S3/PCM0024.jpg

The others are getting closer now and  pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Olivier feels like it's time for an attack of his own!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S3/PCM0025.jpg

He's opened up a gap of 22'', but there are still 17 km to go. It's a long way to go alone. The others are a further 1'15'' behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Wellens and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Amador.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S3/PCM0026.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Wellens and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Amador caught up on the flat with 6 km from the finish. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Olivier immediately sits up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S3/PCM0027.jpg

This group is a much more cohesive unit and are working together. Less than 2 minutes behind the leaders they of course haven't given up the chase.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S3/PCM0028.jpg

The leaders have nearly ground to a stop and the others are back in as we head for the final 3 km and the last ramp to the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S3/PCM0029.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Wellens now injects a bit of pace into the group as we enter the final 2 km.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S3/PCM0030.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Olivier has now taken pole position as the riders head under the flamme rouge. No one yet making the big the acceleration.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S3/PCM0031.jpg

500 m to go, the pace is ratcheting up now. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Olivier still in the best position with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Wellens and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Brambilla alongside him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S3/PCM0032.jpg

200 m left, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Olivier is not losing ground, he's still in front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S3/PCM0033.jpg

And he does it again! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Olivier wins the sprint, 2nd stage win for the Dutchman! 3 for 3 for Aegon!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Wellens has to settle for 2nd. He was so strong today, maybe he could have attacked later in the stage, but the certainly forced the issue today. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Godoy finishes strong to complete the podium. After that it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Martin 4th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Brambilla 5th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Oomen 6th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Choi 7th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png De la Cruz 8th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S3/PCM0034.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Berhane was part of the chasing group, but ran out of legs on this final ramp and came in 48'' later.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S3/PCM0035.jpg

The biggest loser today is undoubtedly pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Gesink as he came in a full 6 minutes after Olivier. You'd have to think his GC hopes are over.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S3/PCM0036.jpg

So it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Daan Olivier that extends his lead in the GC to 28'' over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Wellens and 32'' over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Godoy. Wellens though is the KOM leader now, with Godoy taking over the young rider's jersey. 13 riders failed to finish the stage inside the time limit. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Moser and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Nizzolo are two sprinters who failed to make it.
