Tour du Maroc - Stage 1

Stage Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S1/profile.jpg

Stage 1 of the Tour du Maroc is a chance for the sprinters. With 4 of these stages a lack of success today is not pivotal, but the chance to wear the leader's jersey and get a foothold on the points jersey is a great way to start. 193 km today, pretty much flat all the way with no KOM points on offer yet.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S1/PCM0001.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Allonca instigates the first move of the race and he is followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Kortsidakis.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S1/PCM0002.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Christian is trying to join them as we see more movement behind him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S1/PCM0003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Mora and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Morin (have to be careful not to mix those two up) take advantage of a bit of a lull in the peloton. They manage to sneak away as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S1/PCM0004.jpg

We see another move from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Gamper now, but the peloton are on his case. They don't want anymore riders up the road. All other attacks are being pulled back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S1/PCM0005.jpg

With that we have our breakaway of the day as they have established a gap of 3'39'' over the first 25 km of the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S1/PCM0006.jpg

The pace in the peloton is quite relaxed now as expected and gap has gone up to 4'43''. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png ISA - Hexacta, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png MOL and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Aegon are the teams that have taken chasing resposibilities.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S1/PCM0007.jpg

Meanwhile the breakaway is at the first intermediate sprint. It's a tight affair between 3 riders, but it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Kortsidakis that takes 6 pts ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Morin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Christian.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S1/PCM0008.jpg

On the 2nd intermediate sprint we have another battle between the same 3 riders. This time the result reverses. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Christian wins the sprint before pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Morin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Kortsidakis. We have 81 km left in the stage now and the gap has fallen to 3'06''.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S1/PCM0009.jpg

Back in the peloton we see the same three teams at the front, putting more riders forward as the race heads into the final 70 km.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S1/PCM0010.jpg

At the final intermediate sprint we get the same 3 way fight again, but this time it's young pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Morin who takes the sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Christian is 2nd and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Kortsidakis 3rd. With 50 km to go the gap is at 2'15''.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S1/PCM0011.jpg

With 20 km left the gap is now under a minute as the peloton can see the escapees ahead of them on this long straight road.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S1/PCM0012.jpg

The breakaway though had a lot more firepower than the peloton imagined and with 3 km to go they are still ahead of the pack! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb and his helpers are massed at the front with all the other sprinters behind them in a long line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S1/PCM0013.jpg

The breakaway runs out of steam with 2 km to go. They really gave it a good go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Santos and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Contreras are leading out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb. Behind him are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Nizzolo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Lo Cicero, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Moser, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Stepniak and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gcn.png Vingerling.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S1/PCM0014.jpg

We pretty much have the same order of riders as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Contreras releases pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb under the flamme rouge. There is gap to everyone else, so it's all down to these riders here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S1/PCM0015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen are neck and nect with 600 m to go. Everyone else a few bike lengths behind, looks like this is a showdown between the two favourites.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S1/PCM0016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen has moved ahead with 400 m to go. From behind it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Moser who is making up the most ground.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S1/PCM0017.jpg

200 m to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen looks good as he's maintaining his lead. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Moser and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Stepniak look to be in a fight for 3rd now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S1/PCM0018.jpg

Oh yeah! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen has time to celebrate as he crosses the not quite correctly marked finish line in first place. His manager and team asked for a performance and he delivered!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb was simply leadout too quickly today and had to settle for 2nd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Moser hangs on for 3rd to complete the podium. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Stepniak is 4th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gcn.png Vingerling and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Lo Cicero. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish comes in 7th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Nizzolo 8th. There was a gap to the rest of the peloton, but is should have zero impact on the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/S1/PCM0019.jpg

So pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Dylan Groenewegen takes the leader's jersey with victory on the opening stage. He also leads the points classification. The KOM jersey has yet been contested, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Morin is the best young rider.
