GP Lugano
Welcome to Switzerland for the 2nd edition of the GP Lugano! Last year Valio’s Cyril Gautier won the first edition after a sneaky late attack, finishing in the same time as 59 other riders! As you can see, the harder parts of the race are more at the start of the day, so another big group sprinting for the win is not unthinkable. The (P)CT puncheurs have had some busy days lately, with Beltran taking the win in Lithuania and Kelderman and other CT puncheurs dominating across the Italian/Swiss border in Torino. Let’s have a look at the list of favourites.
| MTN | HILL | STA | RES | SPR | ACC | Kelderman | 71 | 82 | 80 | 75 | 67 | 72 | Beltran | 79 | 81 | 73 | 72 | 66 | 76 | Buchmann | 76 | 81 | 73 | 74 | 65 | 73 | Paulinho | 75 | 80 | 70 | 72 | 68 | 75 | Prevar | 71 | 80 | 77 | 70 | 67 | 73 | Waeytens | 71 | 80 | 72 | 70 | 66 | 73 | Dowsett | 65 | 80 | 74 | 69 | 66 | 71 | Zaini | 66 | 80 | 74 | 65 | 65 | 70 | Turgis | 66 | 79 | 76 | 78 | 70 | 77 | Edmondson | 69 | 79 | 75 | 72 | 70 | 76 | Gebrezgabihier | 70 | 79 | 74 | 74 | 67 | 69 | Slagter | 78 | 79 | 71 | 73 | 61 | 71 | Moscon | 73 | 79 | 76 | 77 | 59 | 73 | Anuar Aziz | 65 | 78 | 73 | 68 | 64 | 66 | Watson | 65 | 78 | 76 | 72 | 62 | 72 | De Plus | 76 | 78 | 74 | 73 | 60 | 72 | Ackermann | 65 | 77 | 75 | 71 | 77 | 80 | Felline | 66 | 77 | 75 | 73 | 74 | 78 | Smirnovs | 68 | 77 | 74 | 69 | 72 | 78 | Bettiol | 71 | 77 | 78 | 75 | 71 | 77 | Hoelgaard | 74 | 77 | 72 | 72 | 68 | 74 | Bratashcuk | 71 | 77 | 75 | 70 | 62 | 67 | Pernsteiner | 75 | 77 | 73 | 71 | 61 | 72 | Padun | 80 | 77 | 72 | 74 | 60 | 75 | Skjerping | 70 | 77 | 71 | 67 | 58 | 65 | Frankiny | 78 | 76 | 72 | 75 | 61 | 75 | Houle | 66 | 75 | 76 | 71 | 79 | 78 | Kreder | 64 | 75 | 75 | 71 | 77 | 78 | Korosec | 68 | 75 | 74 | 71 | 75 | 78 | Modolo | 60 | 72 | 73 | 70 | 77 | 79 |
As a wise man once said: “Better to have too many names in your GP Lugano 2020 startlist, than not enough.” These +-30 riders should be battling for the points in tomorrow’s race, with the best puncheurs among them going for the win. Kelderman and Beltran currently with a lot of confidence after their recent wins, whereas Buchmann also had a strong Tour of Lithuania. Paulinho is another strong puncheur that could benefit from a hard race from the start, with Prevar and Waeytens as other candidates for the win. Those six names are all similarly strong in a sprint, so if it comes to a sprint between a big group it’s hard to say who of them is the favourite.
If the race is more selective than last year, the all-rounders to look at are Slagter, Moscon for home team Centovalli, De Plus, Hoelgaard, Padun and Frankiny.
Nevertheless, if the race is similar to last year, the sprinters among the puncheurs could finally find a race they like again. Top favourite in that department seems to be Ackermann, who was unlucky in Lithuania after suffering a puncture in the second stage. Felline, Smirnovs and Bettiol are similar puncheurs with an okay sprint, whereas Houle, Kreder, Korosec and Modolo are weaker puncheurs but with a similarly dangerous sprint stat.
That was it for the preview, my job here is done. Time for the riders to show what they got tomorrow. Good luck to everyone!

Definitely hoped for a weaker startlist, with the clashing PTHC races... The race wasn't selective at all, so Milano - Torino definitely was suiting us better. But of course we still want to do well in our one and only "real" home race. Moscon unfortunately won't be among the top favorites - except if we can again make the race very hard.
I guess we'll have to approach the MGUCI to make this profile much tougher next year, as it will likely be our win goal
Good lucke to everyone and thanks for the preview!

De Plus with a good result last race, but this should suit him even less.

Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

I have my doubts about Beltran in this race. Simply because he usually hasn't bothered to sprint on these flat finishes. Luckily we've already stayed off relegation so this race doesn't have much importance. Although looks like Beltran has decided he wants a big wage and has started performing again
Thanks for the preview Nemo

Picked this race in the hopes it could produce a reduced bunch sprint of some kind for Houle to win, and it looks like he could well do that if it comes to it - but no guarantee it will with a pretty tough route! Should be exciting racing, hopefully not too exciting! Thanks for the preview Nemo

Could do with a big result here to take back the rankings lead, though it won't be easy with this field. So failing that, can we just outscore Repsol by 15 points? |

We've brought Frankiny to his home race, but I'm not convinced the route will allow him a good performance here.

Not buying that top billing for Kelderman one bit Despite the performance in MT! Probably Top 5 to 10 is a reasonable expectation for this race. Will help to start the last month off well.
Thanks for the preview Nemo

Really disappointing race & result here, but with that way too easy course it had to be expected... A shame that our home race doesn't suit us better, but we might need to talk to MGUCI to make better use of the hills around Lugano next time. Bunch sprints of 30+ riders in so-called "hilly" races aren't fun and way too random - or am I wrong, Wilco?
Still, Ackermann is definitely a logical winner on this course, congrats to Popo4Ever!
Not a great start to the month, but not a horror show, either. Still very bad news that both hilly races in Switzerland are on such easy profiles this year...

The race itself might be a bit more boring compared to a pure hill race, but that doesn't mean races like these shouldn't be on the calender. Punchy sprinters should get a chance to win something as well
I understand the disappointment as it is your home race, but as long as most of the hilly races are (more) selective, then everything seems fine to me

Exptected weak race from us here. Apparently this would have been a good race day for Kump, hindsight is 20/20. Thanks for the report!

Wow, that is a very great, very unexpected win! Ackermann hadnt been too Lucky so far, so some consolidation is amazing!
Also Prevar and Padun getting in good points here, shame it wont be enough to promote, but having so many riders aside from Pluchkin who get occassional wins is awesome!

2nd and 4th is more than I could have hoped for here, and it's a massive step towards sealing the PCT title. Bettiol has had a solid if unspectacular season so good to see him getting 2nd here, and Turgis once again makes me wish it was cheap to train his Mountain stat as he'd be scary with 70 MO |

I think 5th place is probably the best Beltran could have done here. This race doesn't really suit him, so definitely something to think about for next season.
Congrats on the win fjhoekie and thank you for the report Nemo

3rd was good here, had hoped for more selection before the end, but getting 3rd from that sprint was well done. Scared a bit before you mentioned he was part of the podium fight

Well the high is followed by the low. Probably a bad race selection for Kelderman.

Super frustrating to see Houle just on the cusp of competitiveness, making the right selection but not having the energy left to compete in the sprint, especially as if he did this could have been an absolutely massive win for us. Congrats to fjhoekie and Ackermann, nice to see him show up for you, perfect stat combo for that race clearly managing to survive the hills with enough energy to smash the sprint, brilliant. And thanks for the as ever entertaining report Nemo
