After a calm stage this morning, where yellow jersey Yates took some extra points, the riders have to conquer what is supposed to be the queen’s stage. The volatile riders should enjoy the bigger climb near the end, let’s see if the better climbers amongst the puncheurs can take some time indeed.
Not a flat meter is to be found today, as any road either goes up or down. Nine riders attack, among them we find two very interesting names in Betancourt and Landa. The peloton allows it. The other seven riders are Hategeka, Urcelay, Thill, Duchesne , Gautier, Vingegaard and Filutas.
130 km to go as the leaders are almost seven minutes ahead of the peloton. The teams doing the work there are Campari, Swisslion, Repsol, Duolingo, Farfetch, Xero, Mapei and Lierse.
Even though the riders have been climbing quite a lot already, the first KoM is at 100 km of the finish line. Filutas takes the points on the third cat climb ahead of Hategeka and Urcelay. The peloton crosses the top 5’45” later.
Xero and Mapei are not too fond of Betancourt and Landa having so much time at the head of the race. They reduce the time gap to 3’ with 85 km to go. The GCN rider 2’ behind in the GC, the Polar rider 3’20”.
Second KoM of the day with 72 km to the finish line. Urcelay wins it ahead of Betancourt and Landa. Thanks to this sprint and some strong work by Hategeka the gap over the peloton has grown to 3’45” again!
The leaders tackle the same hill again for KoM-points with a bit more than 50 km to go. Betancourt wins it ahead of Landa, Bettiol still the KoM-leader so far.
And the peloton enters the final 50 km as well. They are still 3’45” behind the race lead, have some teams made a very costly mistake or will they make it up?
Now this is interesting! Bernas with a big turn to make the race hard for Roson, just as Repsol – Netflix did in stage one! Meurisse’s GC is gone so he also takes a big turn, and then very surprisingly Borges seems to sacrifice himself as well for the three Asian climbers in his team! This sees a group of 26 leave everyone else behind, as they are 2’30” behind the race lead with 38 km to go! Let’s see where the most importanr riders are, that are at the s.t. as the yellow jersey in the GC: In the first peloton we see Bettiol, Borges, Goh, Yates, Beltran, Ulissi, Slagter, Yates, Intxausti, Ignatenko, Carpenter, Min, Buchmann, Roson, Benoot, Areruya, Paulinho, Oomen, Hiratsuka, Siskevicius. At 1’30” we find Denz, Ivanov, Senni, Aasvold, Burke, Errazkin, Moazemi and Klemme. At 2’30” we see Stancu, De Vos and Gaspar.
30 km to go, the nine leaders with a 2’05” lead!
This is what’s left.
Colombian champion Beltran feeling good! He reduces the chasing group to 18 riders now, as Ignatenko, Siskevicius, Hiratsuka, Bettiol and Intxausti go overboard!
Final 25 km for the leaders, as Vingegaard and Filutas are dropped! They are back to a 3’15” lead now, as nobody really does the work in the group of favourites!
20 km left, the lead has gone up to 3’30” There are even some riders making it back to the chasing group of favourites, with Aasvold the most interesting one. Ivanov also not too far behind now.
And here they go! The seven leaders start the final uphill sector with 12.5 km to go! There’s a decent chance the new yellow jersey is in this group!
The first group of favourites only consists out of fourteen riders now, and is 3’15” behind! The names in this group, chronologically, are Yates, Oomen, Buchmann, Beltran, Slagter Mosca, Roson, Min, Areruya, Benoot, Carpenter, yellow jersey Yates, Ulissi and Borges!
Hategeka is dropped at the front with 11 km to the finish line. His job is done, the favourites are 3’30” behind! Nobody setting the pace there!
Before the short uphill final km, there are two KoM’s. The first one of third category at 9.2 km of the finish line. Gautier has saved the best for last and wins the sprint against Thill and Landa, while Betancourt seems to be struggling at the back!
In the group of favourites we see an attack by Beltran! Yates, Oomen and Buchmann try to follow the Swisslion rider, Borges is getting dropped!
Gautier going for the win! He has a 40” gap over Thill and another 40” over Landa and Betancourt with 8 km to go!
Beltran, Yates and Buchmann are 3’30” behind the Frenchman, while Oomen is 10” behind them at the top of the third category KoM! Min, Areruya and Ulissi 25” behind the group Beltran!
Final five km for Gautier! 1 km to climb on the penultimate hill (first category), as Thill is one minute behind and the other breakway riders at 1’35”! 3’40” behind the Frenchman we see the groups of Beltran and Areruya have merged!
Yellow jersey Yates doing his best, but together with Benoot and Carpenter he’s already 1’20” behind the group of seven favourites ahead of them! Slagter and Roson even further behind!
Gautier takes the KoM-lead and comes closer to the stage win, as he has a nice gap at the top of the penultimate hill with 3.8 km to go!
Thill, Urcelay and Betancourt cross that top 1’30” later.
No attack in the group of seven favourites, as they go over the top 3’20” later than the Valio rider! Ulissi seems to be having trouble keeping up!
Final uphill km for Gautier! Surely this can’t go wrong anymore?! The three chasers at 1’25”!
They are not coming closer! 500 meters left for the Frenchman!
And he wins! What a ride!
Ulissi came very close to the yellow jersey, but he can’t follow the other favourites anymore in the uphill sprint!
Betancourt sprints to second at 1’25” of the winner, but a very strong Urcelay in third will also gain a lot of places in the GC, as he was only 2’ behind the yellow jersey before this stage. Thill finishes fourth.
So who takes the yellow jersey?! Beltran (5th), Yates (6th), Buchmann (7th), Areruya (8th), Oomen (9th) and Min (10th) all come in at the same time… It is …. Oomen!
