I know this question comes up every year but after reading the thread about whether a new patch will come out after the Vuelta (or not as the case may be) I suppose I've got to ask it now.
Is it worth spending time on a "long term" career now or is it still too soon?
In previous years I've normally waited until around October time to start a serious career (I think last year the final patch and PCM Spain came out in October) but after reading about the collapse of PCM Fusion and that there will be no more official patches it seems like now's the time.
I have had PCM08 for a couple of months now and have played some short careers. However, it always seems a waste to put a load of time into a serious career, only to find that the latest patch or a new DB introduces features which cannot be used without starting a new one. My impressions of the game are that it's really good (better than previous years) but there are small things (e.g. lack of equipment, colours of helmets/bikes, number of teams/races etc.) which I thought might be improved either with DB's or Patches.
I know there are already files out there to improve this but I always had it in the back of my mind that an "uber" mod would come out to combine them all, or something better would appear.
I almost wish they would stop making patches so that I with a good conscience could start playing a serious career. But now I just read about a Giga Pack and it would be kinda fun to include that one too. Unfortunately, they haven't published a release date yet.
Guys, there will never be a perfect time. Databases will continue coming for the next 5 years. Some people still make databases for CyM1 which was released 7 years ago... It's all about knowing what you want: Are you content with the number of teams in the databases released so far? The skills? The amount of equipment? And so on. If yes, go ahead and play. Yes, better databases will come around, but it's surely better to have fun now than waiting forever to start a serious career
