Welcome for the first stage! 224 km and some hills, will we see the first significant time gaps already, or will there be a reduced bunch sprint? Let’s find out!
Gallego Martin attacks, Tizza and Gall join him.
Well, sometimes it is that easy. The three riders quickly get a 4’ gap, nobody else trying to join them. A lot of teams using a domestique to help in the chase: Repsol, Swisslion, Berg Cycles, Duolingo, Lierse, Farfetch, Campari, Mapei, Xero and Desigual.
Already over halfway stage as the three musketeers up front are nearing the first KoM of the day. In total there will be ten hills, with several times the same one. Most of the hills are not long at all, but very steep. Anyway, let’s start the party. The peloton is 3’30” behind.
First KoM of the day, which the riders will have to do multiple times today (only two times for a measle 4th cat KoM). 1.5 km, but most of the time above 20%, with the steepest part at 24%!
Gall takes the first KoM-points, the others don’t really give him a fight. The peloton crosses the top 3’ later.
We’re on the third ascent of that steep monster, as the first sixty riders already have a nice gap over the rest of the peloton! Still 77.5 km to go, but the likes of Paulinho, Yates and Beltran making the race hard already! Several big names caught by surprise in the second group, including home riders Navardauskas and Siskevicius, as well as Bilbao, Di Maggio, Claeys, Gautier, Betancourt, Meurisse and Waeytens!
Just when the riders thought they were done with the steep ascents on that crazy hill, the race organisation throws a steep plug street into the mix. Again over 15% at the steepest point, which is kind of the whole ascent.
Repsol – Netflix has a lot of faith in Roson and wants to make this race as hard as possible! First Bernas, then Barbero and now Valter are putting the dropped favourites at 3’ or more already! We are 2 km away from the second KoM and 64 km from the finish line as only Tizza is still ahead of the peloton!
Valter with a big turn until the top of the mountain, dropping another 10+ riders, including Ackermann, Denz and Klemme! The third category KoM-points go to Bettiol, Valter and Beltran.
After a small descent the riders tackle the same hill again, and Valter is getting tired. It allows Denz and Klemme to come back, but Ackermann can’t join them. 51.5 km to go as a peloton of 37 riders has four hills to conquer. Cherkasov and Bettiol now also setting the pace.
And just after the descent is another steep hill. Beltran seems to be having fun and puts a bit of pressure on the others in the leading group. In a couple of km we find another steep ascent, before we have a long flat sector going into the final hills of the day.
The pace went down a bit, allowing guys like Siskevicius to come back. 40 km to go as we cross the penultimate KoM of the day. Borges looked to be scoring the maximum of points, but a small acceleration by Bettiol sees the Italian coming in first and very probably wearing the polka-dots tomorrow. Teammate Yates also scores a point.
Final 30 km! 10 km of flat now before we head onto the plug-mountain again. A peloton of 37 riders has a gap over a lot of smaller groups. The most important names that are at the front of the race are Bettiol, Siskevicius, Yates, Roson, Beltrann Buchmann, Slagter, Yates, Areruya, Oomen, Borges, Benoot, Paulinho, Intxausti, Ulissi, Moazemi and Klemme.
Bettiol leads the first peloton over the penultimate hill of the day. 13.7 km to go and 1 km to climb on this hill. No attacks yet.
No attacks at all! The first peloton has grown to 55 as Landa is the most important name making it back in this group, while Bettiol comes across the top of the final KoM-hill in first and strengthens his lead in that classification.
Landa is dropped again as a peloton of 46 tackles the final short but steep hill with exactly 10 km to go! Will we see any attacks now, or are the favourites happy with a reduced bunch sprint today?!
Beltran uppens the pace a a tiny bit, but only some less important riders get dropped. After a short and steep descent it’s seven km to go, with Bettiol setting the pace again.
Less than 5 km as the Italian seems to be tired and leaves the work over to Siskevicius. There might come a late attack, but let’s see who the fastest riders in this group are. Yates stands out, but guys like Rumac, Borges, Ulissi, Wackermann and even Siskevicius or Bettiol might have a chance. It all depends who’s still feeling good after a quick and hard stage.
Yates is being brought to the front by Cherkasov with 3 km to go. Ulissi sees this and is smart enough to take the Brit’s wheel, which seems to be the position to be.
1.5 km to go as it’s still the Russian in the lead, although he seems tired. Ulissi still positioned perfectly, Yates will have to play this well if he wants to win it, as the Italian is looking good, and the Desigual rider has no real lead-out anymore!
It’s Ivanov who tries to save the Minions’ day with an acceleration under the flamme rouge! The Bulgarian not really known to be a world class sprinter though! Behind him we can see Intxausti, Min and Cuming, on the other side of the road Oomen tries his luck! Not the names you would expect in a sprint!
As if it were child’s play, Yates takes the lead with 500 meters to go, the only rider he should be worrying about is Ulissi, who has a small gap to make up for!
The Aramco rider is coming closer, but only 200 meters to the finish line!
But nothing could be done against this man! Yates takes the win ahead of Ulissi!
Ivanov’s surprising acceleration sees him rewarded with a magnificent third place! Minions manager Marco will probably be furious at Claeys again, but hopefully this makes up for it a bit! Intxausti (4th) and Oomen (5th) in the top-5 is also quite unexpected, with the other top-10 spots going to Min (6th), Cuming (7th), Siskevicius (8th), Buchmann (9th) and De Vos (10th).
