Tour of America - Stage 17
roturn
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_17_PCM0001.jpg

Day 117 is a mountain stage but this time without a proper mountain top finish. Instead the long HC is going into a descent with a very short uphill section following. If you want to create gaps here, the attack must happen at the HC climb already or in the descent.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_17_PCM0005.jpg

Obviously also a good breakaway opportunity and with the KoM competition being on the edge between GC riders and attackers, it`s not surprising to see some of the highly placed in the morning break. In fact it`s 25 riders and multiple teams with lots of riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Lovik, Cimolai, Andersson
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Chhetri, Berard, Costa, Jiang, Nur Hasan

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Moschella
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png McNulty

KoM wise Mannion is sitting in 2nd with 70 points just 2 points off Penasa.
Lovik at 62 points with Nerz in between.
Also Zielinski in 6th at 42 points is in that group and McNulty 29 or Moschella 22 might need a mention as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_17_PCM0024.jpg

Mannion really struggled early on to get big points. 0 at the Cat.4, which was won by Lovik and then only 4 at the Cat.2 where Moschella and Zielinski got the bigger points. This time nothing for Lovik.

In the end though Mannion moves into the virtual KoM lead now with Lovik passing Nerz for 3rd.

Actually Zielinski also takes the next Cat.4, which makes it a tough task for Mannion to defend the small lead with some more mountain top finishes yet to come, where so far the GC riders dominated.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_17_PCM0035.jpg

Jumping to the mid of the HC climb. So far nothing really happened. The peloton is down to 30 riders.

The breakaway is down to 10 riders:
Moschella, Mannion, Chhetri, Berard, Lovik, Zielinski, McNulty, Costa, Mahdar, Cimolai but the gap isn`t that big anymore. Van Poucke and Kvist still in between but the peloton is less than 90s behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_17_PCM0038.jpg

Biggest name missing is Kiserlovski! He might take a day off today, which will see him drop from his 14th GC but might be needed for Nerz later on.
Also McConvey is dropped as 24th in the GC. Maybe focussin to save energy for the KoM competition, where he is at 48 points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_17_PCM0041.jpg

2,5km from the top a trio attacks the break and it splits into several pieces.

Mannion, Chhetri and Lovik prove strongest whereas the Sauber riders Costa and Berard follow next.

Zielinski might have spent too much energy for the KoM sprints while Moschella is surprisingly dropped now alongside McNulty and Mahdar.

The acceleration extends the gap again as the peloton is not really careing today and saving their energy.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_17_PCM0043.jpg

So close to the big points but Mannion is losing contact just before the line. Chhetri and Lovik the ones passing the KoM in front of him.

Still he remains in front of Lovik and has gained a few points on Penasa/Nerz today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_17_PCM0046.jpg

The peloton is at almost 4min again as no team really felt responsible for a decent pace once hitting he real climb.

But as the 2nd group is almost 2min behind as well, the win might go to the trio in front as it`s hard to lose such advantage on the descent and short climb in the end.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_17_PCM0048.jpg

Good news for Kiserlovski. Due to the low pace, he is even able to make it back and remaining in his top15 GC spot.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_17_PCM0054.jpg

Lovik feels strong and goes into the attack with 7km to go. Still on the descent but not for very long.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_17_PCM0057.jpg

In especially Chhetri though brings him back once the descent is over. Mannion still sitting behind him, not looking strongest but neither too weak anymore.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_17_PCM0059.jpg

1,5km and the slopes really aren`t very hard here. Actually a short descent section right now where Chhetri decides to attack.

Mannion this time the one trying to close the gap.

No danger from behind as the gap is still at 90s.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_17_PCM0061.jpg

Flamme Rouge and Mannion couldn`t close the gap and neither Lovik is strong enough after his solo attempt.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_17_PCM0063.jpg

Despite having time, Chhetri not celebrating on the line. He wanted this stage win and he got it. Good performance and clearly also took profit from a strong team performance as their team got 5 riders in the break of which 3 stayed there the longest to give him some support.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_17_PCM0064.jpg

Mannion in 2nd ahead of Lovik. Still solid stage performances and they will be the new 1-2 in the KoM ranking as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_17_PCM0065.jpg

Costa and Berard definitely need to be named today. 4th and 5th but main support for Chhetri to help him winning the stage!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_17_PCM0067.jpg

Moschella surely expected more from his climbing legs today but only got 6th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_17_PCM0070.jpg

Actually he was the last of the break as behind the peloton is catching all others on the line with Nerz up to 7th of the day. 4'26 in the end, they won`t care really, more important stages for the GC riders to come.
