Kind of weird looking "sprinter" stage. Flat rated but with a late Cat.2 and then after the descent a long 2-3 % uphill section towards the finish. Will surely not be a normal sprint stage.
15 riders think, today is a breakaway opportunity. Soem teams with several riders in there. The bold ones are the ones with multiple riders that are allowed to rest at the end of the group with team mates working twice as much.
Kangangi
Rojus
Knotten
Marryatt
Scott
Erdenesuren
Mahdar
Bol
Costa
Nur Hasan
Hoehn
McNulty
Granigan
Wilson
Alba
Bol - Mahdar - McNulty the order at the Cat.2, which sees them climbing a bit in the rankings but right now the 3 podium riders in the GC also have the KoM podium.
Actually just 8 riders made it in the first group over the top.
Most shocking for BNZ as all 3 riders including the resting Marryatt wasn`t able to hold on!
Similar Gjensidige, who lost 2 of their riders but at least got Kangangi now pretty fresh in there, that said, he is a regular break rider and has spent a bit of energy by now. Same goes to the McCormic riders. Still 3 in there but Hoehn and McNulty went into the break often.
The peloton was 2 min down at the top and with 16km to go they are able to reduce it further to 70s but it`s already some of their last leadout riders. Right now Geniez and Kiserlovski working for Haller but it`s not long until also the final leadouts Park and King have to chase!
When this happened, the break was down to just 30s but both Park and King dropped back and had no energy left. And Kraftwerk was not willed to let Nerz work here and neither were other teams, e.g. Brandt for Bennett and with Kangangi putting a high pace in the first group and in fact the 8 are cooperating well, the gap got over the 1min mark again with 4km to go and the peloton basically sit up realizing that they don`t have the men power left for chasing and sprinting.
Kangangi still in the lead with 1,8km to go, McNulty behind him with the two strongest sprinters Bol and Mahdar sitting right behind in a perfect position.
Costa as best puncheur might surprise on those 1,7 % slopes while Wilson, Hoehn or Alba are in the later positions.
1.3km to go and McNulty attacks Kangangi. Bol and Mahdar react quickly and follow the US rider.
900m and Bol into the lead as McNulty is all but a fast sprinter. Mahdar behind with Kangangi not yet giving up with Costa behind him as also all the others.
Mahdar struggles and won`t win! With 400m to go one sprinter is beaten and also the full McCormick squad, Costa or Alba.
It`s between Bol in the lead and Kangangi, who seems to have the biggest engine by far.
150m and also Bol is reaching his red zone. He simply can`t go any faster feeling the lactat in his legs.
Kangangi though still going on and passing him towards the win.
Huge one for Gjensidige and also for Kenya in general. He tried quite often and finally got rewarded.
Bol in 2nd ahead of ...
... Mahdar in 3rd. The two sprinters surely had hoped for more but as they had to work all day, Kangangi had a small advantage, plus the slightly uphill sprint did cost them in the end.
McCormick with good depth but no big result. McNulty as 4th with his 2nd top10, Wilson, Alba, Costa, Hoehn next.
For once when he goes for it, basically no other interested neither, Ranneries takes a good sprint result. 9th for him ahead of Stepniak and Haller.
They lost the fight today but the profile was not to their favour.
