Euskal Bizikleta - Stage 2

Stage Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Euskal/S2/profile.jpg

Stage 2 of the Euskal Bizikleta today. Another stage rated as flat for the sprinters, but we have a lot of climbing on the menu today. A total of 6 categorised climbs, so a big day for the KOM classification and let's see if we get some GC implications also.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Euskal/S2/PCM0001.jpg

There is a KOM right from the off and we have a surprising attack as one of the outsiders for this race jumps ahead. It's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Hugentobler who takes 6 pts over the top! He is followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Main and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Katrasnik.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Euskal/S2/PCM0002.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Katrasnik is joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Pronskiy and another outsider in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Roux. Strava already has the KOM leader, maybe they want a 1-2 in that competition.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Euskal/S2/PCM0003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Sotto, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png McCormick and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Glanbia have missed this breakaway and are chasing it now. The breakaway is only a minute up the road.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Euskal/S2/PCM0004.jpg

They rode for over 20 km, but couldn't make much headway so the breakaway is off the leash now and they have a 2'45'' advantage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Euskal/S2/PCM0005.jpg

Up the big cat. 2 climb of the day, it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Roux that takes the 10 pts. Followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Main, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Hugentobler, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Pronskiy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Katrasnik.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Euskal/S2/PCM0006.jpg

Back in the peloton we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Carrefour, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Tryg and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Bralirwa the foremost teams chasing down the breakaway, whose advantage is at 2'52'' with 98 km of the stage remaining.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Euskal/S2/PCM0007.jpg

Onto to the next KOM and it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Roux who is clearly proving he is the strongest on the climbs. Strava is really picking up these KOM points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Hugentobler and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Main take the remaining, as the breakaways gap is a 2'33'' with 70 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Euskal/S2/PCM0008.jpg

There is just a descent and the straight up the next climb. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Roux might have been a bit too overconfident on this one, as he went too early and got overtaken by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Hugentobler. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Main takes the last 2 pts.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Euskal/S2/PCM0009.jpg

After that we have an intermediate sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Roux wins the sprint ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Katrasnik and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Hugentobler. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Pronskiy was dropped meanwhile as the now front 4's gap is at 2'18'', 43 km left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Euskal/S2/PCM0010.jpg

In the peloton we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Carrefour and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Tryg really committing themselves to this chase, to set up for a sprint finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Euskal/S2/PCM0011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Roux picks up another 6 pts which puts him at 26, the exact same his teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Hansen has. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Main and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Hugentobler divide up the rest. We see the peloton is really close by now, a breakaway win looks unlikely.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Euskal/S2/PCM0012.jpg

The intermediate sprint is at the 17 km mark from the finish line. The peloton is only 40'' behind a very tired trio of riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Euskal/S2/PCM0013.jpg

Race leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Guillen is at the front doing his best to tackle this final climb to allow him a chance for another sprint. Most of the GC contenders are close by.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Euskal/S2/PCM0014.jpg

We get a bit of an acceleration from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Tsatevich and he has a small gap. Does he want the final KOM points, because this isn't a full on attack?!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Euskal/S2/PCM0015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Tsatevich rolls on for a bit of gap and now the others have to chase, only 9 km from the finish. This could be good tactics from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Carrefour.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Euskal/S2/PCM0016.jpg

Maybe not pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Tsatevich simply isn't giving it his all. A curious move this, but he will be caught.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Euskal/S2/PCM0017.jpg

We have a leading group here that is just a few bike lengths ahead going into the final 3 km.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Euskal/S2/PCM0018.jpg

These are the riders that will contest the stage win:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Ben Nasserpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Barbin
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Szarkapcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Merino Criadopcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Cepeda Hernandezpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Modolo
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Redecker
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Lavoine
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Storerpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Krieger
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Krederpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Kreder
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Weber

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Euskal/S2/PCM0019.jpg

Under the flamme we have both pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Redecker and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Kreder at the front, both still with leadout ahead of them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Euskal/S2/PCM0020.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Kreder is in the best position with 500 m remaining, but everyone else is gaining ground.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Euskal/S2/PCM0021.jpg

250 m to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Merino Criado is going backwards now and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Lavoine looks to be carrying the most speed. Can pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Kreder hold out?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Euskal/S2/PCM0022.jpg

Well this wasn't the safest way to place the hoardings, but it doesn't matter to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Anthony Lavoine who just managed to pip pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Kreder at the line! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Weber with a strong finish rounds out the podium.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Redecker is 4th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Krieger who just can't find that win is 5th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Modolo 6th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Kreder in 7th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Merino Criado is 8th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Euskal/S2/PCM0023.jpg

Despite the customary split when it comes to sprints there are no time gaps as usual. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Lavoine takes over the yellow jersey and is the leader in the points classification, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Krieger will wear the jersey in his stead. In a battle of the Strava KOM hunters it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Hansen who retains his jersey, as does pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Katrasnik and will wear white again tomorrow.
