Race Report, Stage 6

Stage 6 marks the 2nd stage start in Croatia and today the peloton leaves Dubrovnik heading 169km to Podgorica in Montenegro. The stage is rated hilly but is mostly flat with one big climb ad then a series of small hills to the finish. The profile screams breakaway win and that is how it ended last year.

As always in this race a bevy of KOM points, this time 5 of them, 4 Cat 4s and 1 Cat 1. Yesterday pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Errazkin built up a 39-point lead so it will be interesting to see if the peloton concedes that competition at this point.

Similar riders show up as stage favorites, but so far it has been the stronger climbers on the list who have had the edge.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/favs.jpg

And again it is Desigual on the move with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Dunne. Maybe the KOM leader relying on his teammates to defend the jersey while he recovers. It is only 600 meters to the first Cat 4.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/01.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Dunne just holds off pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Kolesnikov. The Irishman has 33 KOM points and is in third. The Russian up to 26. The leader has 70. Third rider across is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Bravo. Those 3 and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Ivanov have 1’06 on the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/02.jpg

The front 4 are joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Vliegen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Antunes and with 160k to go they have 1’38.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/03.jpg

Currently MOL seem unhappy they aren’t in the break and are not letting the gap go.

Soon after they launch two riders up the road: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Dina and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Abdurrahman, who are joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Larsen. The gap to the front 6 is 1’55.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/04.jpg

At the 2nd KOM point pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Dunne takes the points, again ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Kolesnikov.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/05.jpg

With 149 km to go all 9 riders combine up front to form the break of the day, they have 3’17 to the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Larsen did no work to close the gap, the team of the Yellow Jersey happy to just mark the move. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Antunes is the closest on GC but he is over 9 minutes behind.

100km to go, the break’s lead maxed at about 5 minutes and is now is now 3’04, Moser, EA Vesuvio and Isostar on the front. Neither pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Larsen nor pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Kolesnikov is working in the break.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/06.jpg

95km to go and the break pass the second sprint without paying any attention, the first one was also ignored.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/07.jpg

60km to go for the break, 1.6k to the next Cat 4, then there is a short descent, a sprint point and the start of the main climb. In the peloton the same 3 teams plus Rakuten seem intent on keeping this close for now, the lead is 1’51.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Dunne again holds off pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Kolesnikov at the KOM. He is now virtual 2nd to his teammate with 43 points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Kolesnikov is on 32, keeping himself in the picture.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/09.jpg

The break regroups and passes the sprint and then starts the main climb of the day. The peloton at 1’18. Will they keep up the pace on the climb?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/climb.jpg

50k to go and 10k to climb, the peloton at 1’07. So far they have kept pace up but the riders on the front include pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Kuboki, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Holloway and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Reimer. Not exactly mountain goats. Only a few riders have been dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/11.jpg

Rakuten are committed to the chase and bring forward bigger guns. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Brozyna does a long turn, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Shirota. The lead is still 1’05 but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Dina and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Larsen have been dropped. 5km left to climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/12.jpg

3km to go, the lead down to 46 seconds as the two dropped riders are caught. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Hosek on the front now. The peloton down to 125 riders, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Vakoc the most notable dropped rider, so far pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Claeys is looking ok.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/13.jpg

1km to the top and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Ivanov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Kolesnikov attack the break. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Abdurrahman is almost back in the peloton which is 56 seconds behind the leaders with the rest of the break in between.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/14.jpg

The Tinkoff rider comes around to take the points and drop Ivanov. He now has 48 points and is in second in the KOM and well positioned to take a shot at the lead on Stage 8.

The peloton crosses 1’21 behind the leader. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Dunne and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Vliegen are caught.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/15.jpg

99 riders in the peloton but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Hagen and most of his team have been dropped. The Norwegian seems to have decided to let the GC go, he is already 6’06 behind in that competition. Is he planning a breakaway raid on a later stage as in Norway?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/16.jpg

35km to go, the 4 surviving breakaway riders are back together and lead by just 33 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/17.jpg

The peloton has split with a 51-rider group being gapped. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Sepulveda (20th GC) is caught behind but the biggest victim is 11th placed pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Chaves who seems to have been horribly positioned and is right at the back of the second group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/18.jpg

The breakaway hold their gap on the descent and as they reach the bottom pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Bravo attacks. His leader has joined up with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Hagen but they are in A2 2’32 behind the 56-rider peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/19.jpg

The break reforms with just under 1k to the final categorized KOM point, there are still 2 more short climbs after that. Behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Calmejane and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Gastauer have been driving the peloton and the lead is just 23 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Kolesnikov goes solo and grabs 5 more KOM points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Antunes is caught, the other two are 16 seconds ahead of the peloton and 9 seconds behind the leader.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/21.jpg

Behind the Hagen group has closed within 2 minutes of the main group.

13km to go and the breakaway is caught. A lot of teams really committed to the chase today against a strong breakaway. The GC favorites will be fighting out the stage. If the pace slows the dropped riders might make it back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/22.jpg

But the pace doesn’t slow and immediately pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Bakelants, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Kinoshita, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Boily take advantage of the second-to-last bump in the road to attack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/23.jpg

The Yellow Jersey has no teammates with him so he has to respond, as does pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Mohoric.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/24.jpg

That triggers a series of attacks and as they pass under the 10km banner with one short climb to go the situation looks like this:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/status.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Sepulveda and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Chaves are now in the 89-rider group with Hagen, but that group is likely to split further. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Vakoc is also in this group so he has recovered a little.

The front two groups and the next two groups each come together to form a 9-rider lead group and a 6-rider chase group. The top 16 in the GC are represented, minus Chaves. The gap between them is 25 seconds, just the climb in the picture left, then downhill to the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/25.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png De Bie and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Koretzky (17th and 18th on GC) are leading the next group on the road.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Boily and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Mohoric try to attack the lead group but get nowhere.

5k to go for the leaders, it is all downhill or flat. The lead is now 30 seconds with another 37 seconds to the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png De Bie group which has 23 riders. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Formolo will be the big GC loser if it stays like this while 2nd place pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Teklit has a little more room for error.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/26.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Lopez tries an attack but just succeeds in leading them out as they approach 1k to go. It is going to be a 9-rider sprint. On paper the advantage probably lies with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Sagan. The second group is still 30 seconds behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/27.jpg

600 meters and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Kinoshita is in front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/28.jpg

300 meters still the Rakuten man leading, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Sagan on his left, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Mohoric on his right.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/29.jpg

100 meters and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Sagan is in front. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Lopez needs to be careful he doesn’t create a gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/30.jpg

And Sgaan gets his second stage win as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Boily closes in fast.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/31.jpg

He is followed home by:
2. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Boily
3. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Kinoshita
4. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Kwiatkowski
5. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Mohoric
6. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Bakelants
7. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Beltran
8. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Arndt (+ 8)
9.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Lopez (+ 8)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Lopez’ time loss doesn’t cost him at the moment but bonus seconds do mean pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Sagan leapfrogs him to take 2nd in the GC, 13 seconds behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Kwiatkowski. Sagan also takes over the points jersey.

41 seconds later pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Van Garderen easily wins the sprint for 10th. The former GC leader, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Teklit, takes 11th but drops off the podium to 4th in the GC. While pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Formolo finishes 12th and drops from 4th to 10th in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/32.jpg

Teklit's teammate, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Ulissi, leads home the 3rd group at 1’14 to take 16th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S6/33.jpg

The biggest loser on the day is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Chaves, he loses 4’50 and drops from 11th to 20th. The time loss means he doesn’t have much opportunity to make up GC spots. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Hagen drops to 30th, 8’52 behind, but the big damage was done yesterday.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Padun and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Oomen are still on the same time ad the former still holds the Whte Jersey on placings.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Errazkin’s lead over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Kolesnikov is 19 points in the KOM competition.

Isostar moves ahead of Festina by 9 seconds in the team competition.
