Balkans International
Stage 4 takes the peloton 170km from Sarajevo to Bileca. While the stage is rated hilly the last third is mostly downhill so it seems unlikely to be selective. Last year Kalaba won the stage from a reduced group sprint. He is back to try again. Six mountain sprints and since the KOM leader also has the Yellow Jersey he is unlikely to be chasing points, so maybe a new leader today.
The favorites are the punchier riders, but they will need to finish strongly to take the win if it is a sprint.
About 10km gone and the first 7 riders off the front have a 1’20, further back 4 more attackers are on the move.
The front 7 are:
Trakhov
Gebrezgabihier
Errazkin
Kanepejs
Abdurrahman
Arifin
Brandao
The second round of attackers are:
Narvaez
Verhelst
Strakhov
Godoy
4 more rider attack but this time the peloton isn’t as agreeable.
The last group is shut down and with 25km gone the first 11 riders come together to form the break of the day. They have a 3’24 lead with 5km to the first KOM point, a Cat 4. Errazkin is the closest both on the GC (3’54 down, 35th) and KOM (10 pts, 10th). Desigual making up for their small team with lots of activity - Narvaez in the break today, meaning all 6 riders on the team have been in a break.
At the KOM Trakhov attacks first but Errazkin just pinches it.
The Deisgual rider up to 15 points, 3 for Trakhov and Godoy gets the last point.
Next climb is a cat 2, 4.9km at 6.3%. The break has 4’27.
2km to the top and Narvaez is trying to set up his teammate.
It works nicely and at the top Errazkin easily takes the points.
He now has 25 points, he needs 42 to take the led, still 4 climbs to go including a cat 1. Rest of the points go to Trakhov (8 + 3 =11), Kanepejs (6), Godoy (4 + 1 = 5), and Arifin.
Abdurrahman is dropped and drifts gradually back to the peloton.
With 120km to go and the break ahead by 4’34 Le Roux decides to try and bridge the gap.
The break passes the lone sprint point without sprinting. Their lead is 3’27, Le Roux is at 2’08. Isostar, FarFetch, Air France, Aegon and Rakuten all contributing to the chase.
The next climb is 7.5k at 5.3% with Cat 2 points at the top. The peloton chasing hard and halfway up the lead is down to 1’27. Le Roux has been caught and dropped by the peloton, he is going to pay for his misadventure.
At the top Gebrezgabihier (10) takes the points ahead of Godoy (8+5=13).
Errazkin gets third taking him to 31 points. Narvaez (4) gets 4th and Brandao 5th (2+6=8). The accelerations stretch the lead back to 1’59 and drop Strakhov. He is soon back in the peloton reducing, the break to 9.
At the next climb, a Cat 3, Gebrezgabihier again takes first taking him to 16 points. Then comes Kanepejs (4+6=10) and Godoy (2+13=15). The lead is 2’15
From here there is 5k of descent and flat and then steep 5.0km the climb to the sole Cat 1 KOM (average = 9.5%). After that it is 55k of gradual descending to the finish.
As Polanc drives the peloton, Verhelst is dropped from the break. The gap is down to 1’39. Despite the pressing the peloton is still 160 riders strong.
2.6 km to the top and Kanepejs is toast.
Errazkin attacks and only Brandao can follow. The Spaniard needs to finish first or second to take the virtual KOM led.
He may have gone too early as Brandao dances away from him. With 900 meters to go Errazkin has a 43 second gap on Gebrezgabihier, who is driving the remainder of the break.
But the front two hold on, Brandao (16+8=24) takes maximum points and Errazkin takes 12 points and leads the virtual KOM by 2 points. There is still a cat 4 to go. The peloton look close but they have dropped back to 2’24.
Gebrezgabihier takes 3rd bringing him to 26 points.
When the peloton reaches the top it is down to 96 riders, Waeytens the most significant rider dropped. Over the top another 30 riders are dropped including Claeys, perhaps too much climbing for him in the first half of this race. Vakoc (25th on GC) has also been dropped.
50km to go for Brandao he has 2’36 on the peloton, which is be led by Gazelle. In between, at 52 seconds is a 5-rider group including Gebrezgabihier, Errazkin, Arifin, Narvaez, and Godoy. At 1’37 is Trakhov. The rest of the break has been caught.
36km to go and Brandao is caught by the 5 chasers. The lead is down to 1’17. Peloton has 67 riders.
The break just holds on long enough for Gebrezgabihier (5+26=31), Godoy (3+21=24) and Errazkin (1+43=44) to take the points. The latter will wear the KOM jersey tomorrow and the three of them are 3rd, 4th and 1st in the completion with the Yellow Jersey in second.
The Claeys/ Vakoc group has rejoined bringing the peloton to 96.
The break hold on for a while but with 8k to go Gazelle close them down. THere will be a sprint finish.
The only recognized sprinter in the group is Reimer so it looks like it will be a sprint of the puncheurs. FarFetch will be regretting an early puncture that took Van der Sande out, otherwise he might still be in the peloton.
Liepins is in a group at 2’05 with a few other sprinters but it doesn’t seem like they will have time to get back on.
With 2km to go the pace is ramped up. The Liepins group can be seen in the distance but they aren’t going to make it back in time.
1km banner, most notable from left to right are Kinoshita behind Kratochvila, Lopez behind Tvetcov, Van Garderen behind Reimer, De Bie behind Zardini, Mohoric behind Calmejane and on the far right Hagen following Edet.
600 meters and Reimer has his nose in front, he might be leading out, he might be sprinting.
200 meters, still Reimer, Mohoric, and Calmejane to his right and Hagen on the far right are closest.
And Reimer shows the puncheurs how to sprint. Two stage wins for EA Vesuvio.
Mohoric gets the 2nd place bonus seconds and Calmejane makes that sweeter by snatching 3rd from the other GC riders.
The rest of the top 10 are Hagen, Arndt, Lopez, De Bie, Van Garderen, Kulimbetov and Beltran.
Teklit finishes a quiet day safely in the group, to hold yellow. Bonus seconds help make up for some of Mohoric’s time loss yesterday and move him up to 17th. No other changes in the GC.
Lopez now has the points jersey but he is in a 3-way tie for first and there are 8 riders within 10 points. Padun holds White, Festina the team competition.
