Race Report, Stage 3

Today is Stage 3 of the Balkans International. 187 km featuring some of the longest climbs of the race, although perhaps not enough to be that selective. 3 sprint points and 4 mountain primes on offer.

The stage favorites show up as:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/favs.jpg

The first attack includes last year’s winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Calmejane and 7 others, but the peloton doesn't like the group and shuts that down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/01.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Calmejane tries again and gets enough gap to take the first sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/02.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Nazaret and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Dina take the rest of the points. 4 other riders also have a gap, we will see if the peloton lets them go.

By the second sprint the front 7 have come together but the order over the sprint is the same.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/03.jpg

The full breakaway is:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Nazaret
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Calmejane
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Dina
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Vanhoucke
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Edet
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Geniets
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Dewulf

They have 2’02 with 160k to go. Other riders tried to bridge but the peloton shut them down.

The team of the leader is happy to let others do the chasing, the lead is 3’40 with 140k to go. A number of the riders in the break were in the main group on Stage 1 and are among the many riders 2’32 back. None of them have any KOM points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/04.jpg

The first climb starts wth 120k to go and the lead at 3’06. The cat 1 climb to Krusevo Brdo is 8.5km long at 6.7%.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/05.jpg

The break stays pretty much together on the climb and at the top pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Edet take first place.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/06.jpg

The points go to:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Edet (16)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Geniets (12)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Calmejane (10)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Nazaret (8)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Vanhoucke (6)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Dina (4)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Dewulf (2)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Dewulf is gapped over the top and will have some ground to make up on the descent. When the peloton summits the lead is up to 6’15.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Dewulf rejoins the front group without too much trouble.

Down the descent and along the valley road Gazelle, Puma, Popo4Ever and Farfetch work hard and with 77km to go the lead is down to 3’05.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/07.jpg

With 64km to go and a 2’27 lead the break starts the 2nd KOM, a 6.2km Cat 2 at 5.1%. Mostly up and down for the rest of the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/profile1.jpg

With 1k to climb pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Calmejane has a gap over his companions. But the peloton is pushing hard and can be seen just 1’34 down the road from the leader.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Geniets almost catches him at the top but the French Isostar rider takes maximum points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/09.jpg

Full points are:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Calmejane (10+10=20)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Geniets (8+12=20)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Vanhoucke (6+6=12)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Nazaret (4+8=12)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Edet (2+16=18)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Niu leads the peleton across 2’06 behind the leading duo (the remainder of the break is spread out in between).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/10.jpg

At the last sprint point with 39km to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Calmejane takes the maximum bonus again, ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Dina and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Nazaret. The break is back together except for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Dewulf who is back in the peloton which trails by 1’16.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/11.jpg

By the time the break starts the next climb (a Cat 3) the peloton is right behind them. A heroic breakaway result looking unlikely for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Calmejane

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/12.jpg

But he won’t give up easily. With 6.5k to climb and 34 km left in the stage he is the last survivor from the break and he is not too proud to draft off the motorbike

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/13.jpg

But 1km later his adventure is over. 138 riders in the pelon. A 33-rider group including the White Jersey, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Vogt and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Claeys has just been gapped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/14.jpg

Puma, Farfetch and Gazelle continue to drive the pace and soon after pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Vakoc and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Prevar are dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/15.jpg

By the top the peloton is down to 98 riders, no other major victims but the mentioned riders are all at least 2 minutes behind. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Calmejane is also dropped meaning a repeat of his GC win is unlikely

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/16.jpg

As the peloton starts the last climb before the finish, with 18 km to go, the count of riders is down to 86 and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png De Bie, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Hagen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Mohoric are all poorly positioned.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/17.jpg

At the Cat 4, which comes halfway up the climb before a short flat section, the points go to the domestiques. The pace has slowed and no more riders are dropped. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Mohoric has moved up but the other two are still playing with fire. The yellow jersey looks comfortable.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/18.jpg

The last section of the climb is 4.2 km at 6.5%. Then there is a descent and a steep ramp to the finish.

The pace slows enough for a 15-rider group including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Calmejane, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Vakoc and White Jersey, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Svab, to rejoin.

Up front we get the first attack from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Boily and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Chaves. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Arndt and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Kinoshita try to follow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/19.jpg

A lot of others, including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Waeytens (wearing KOM) try and jump on the bandwagon

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/20.jpg

But only the original 4 get a gap as they pass under the 10k banner. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Bakelants tries to close them down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/21.jpg

And with the summit in sight they are all back together, a few riders dropped but no big names, 95 in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Van Garderen counters and Evonik with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Budenieks go to the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/23.jpg

The continued pressure splits the pack and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Waeytens, 2nd on GC, is suddenly in trouble. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Calmejane, is dropped again but all the other big names made it into the front group of 52.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/24.jpg

Over the top pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Svab is dropped again as the front group is whittled down to 44, they are 16 seconds behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Van Garderen

3km to go, they are about to start the climb to the finish. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Van Garderen has 8 seconds and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Errazkin attacks out of the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/25.jpg

1.4 km to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Van Garderen still on the front but the peloton has caught him, he can’t have much left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/26.jpg

1km to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Kinoshita, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Beltran, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Kwiatkowski, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Lopez are about to swamp the American. At the back pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Ulissi has been dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/27.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png De Bie and the Yellow Jersey look to be in the worst positions as most of the favorites are fighting up the road (pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Vakoc is slightly further back)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/28.jpg

500 meters and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Kinoshita leads, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Bakelants and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Chaves have joined the 2nd row. Still 35 riders in the front group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/29.jpg

200 meters, 6 riders across the road. 26 riders in the front group including all the big favorites and the Yellow Jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/30.jpg

100 meters and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Sagan gets his nose in front for the first time. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Vakoc has been gapped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/31.jpg

A risky celebration but the Slovakian wins stage 3.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S3/32.jpg

The rest of the top 10 are
2. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Kwiatkowski
3. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Lopez
4. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Beltran
5. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Bakelants
6. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Kinoshita
7. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Formolo
8. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Chaves
9. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Boily
10. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Arndt

Some small gaps form at the back of the group and only 15 riders get the same time. All the riders mentioned earlier lost time plus pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Teklit and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Van Garderen (15 seconds), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Mohoric (20) pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png De Bie (25) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Paulinho (33).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Waeytens and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Calmejane both lose signicant time so they won’t be repeating their GC heroics from last year.

But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Teklit can still dream as he leads the GC by 1’57 followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Sagan and the other top finishers from today’s stage. He also retains the KOM jersey but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Sagan takes over the points jersey. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Padun now leads the young rider jersey and Festina the team jersey.
