Race Report, Stage 1

Stage 1 of the Balkans International covers 188 km from Ljubljana to Samobor. It includes 2 sprint points and 8 KOM climbs, including 2 category 2’s. Last year this turned out to be the pivotal stage as the breakaway took the win and were able to defend their GC advantage to the end.

The stage favorites show up as:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/favs.jpg

The first attack features 3 solid puncheurs in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Mudarra, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Teklit, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Svab.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/01.jpg

And the next attack includes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Waeytens! Will they let last year's Stage 1 winner go again? With him is the young Spaniard,pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Errazkin.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/02.jpg

With 14km gone the leaders are reaching the first climb, a Cat 2 climb of 6.4 km at an average of 6.7% 5 more riders are on the attack and have joined the 2nd pair on the road but the peloton is chasing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/03.jpg

4km still to climb and the chase goes on. The peloton trails the front 3 by 1’27 and the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Waeytens group by 58 seconds. Also joining that group are: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Brandao, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Portela, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Russo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Gebrezgabihier, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Dunne. Mol and Deisgual have 3 each up the road while Aramco and Berg have 2 each. Berg doing all the work in the 2nd group as the other riders all have teammates up the road.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Svab (6 pts) goes too early and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Teklit (10 pts) takes the KOM ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Mudarra (8 pts). Their lead over the peloton is out to 3’22 with 54 seconds on the 2nd group where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Errazkin is now helping Berg.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Russo (4 pts) crosses next followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Waeytens (2pts). pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Errazkin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Portela cross with them. The other 3 are 28 seconds behind.

The same first 3 at the next KOM, a Cat 4.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/06.jpg

They lead the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Waeytens group by 38 seconds and the other 3 by 2’13.

The peloton now 5’21 behind, they must have decided they can manage pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Waeytens this year.

With 145km to go the front 7 come together. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Portela did most of the work to close as the only lone rider in the group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/07.jpg

The next climb is 7.4km at 3.7% with Cat 3 points at the top. An early attack sees the two Desigual riders plus pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Portela get a gap. Behind the peloton has begun to ride and the gap is down to 3’36.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/08.jpg

And it is the Berg rider who takes the maximum points (6) at the top followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Errazkin (4) and then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Svab (2+7=9). pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Waeytens working to close the gap behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/09.jpg

132km to ride and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Teklit, who attacked over the top of the last climb, has bridged across to the front 3 on the descent.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/10.jpg

The front group has 32 seconds on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Waeytens, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Mudarra and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Russo and it is back up to 5’47 versus the pack. The other 3 original breakaway riders have been stuck half way between the front and the peloton for a long time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Svab takes the first sprint ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Portela and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Errazkin.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/11.jpg

The peloton is now 4’22 behind while the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Waeytens group has dropped to 1’52 behind. They will need to get moving if he is to repeat his heroics from last year.

113 km to go and the 3rd group on the road catches the 2nd group. This will be important for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Waeytens as he now has two riders to work for him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Mudarra was having trouble closing the gap on his own and they still trail the front of the race by 57 seconds. They lead the peloton by 2’26.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/12.jpg

Rakuten, Air France, Moser and Aegon working in the peleton.

The extra fire power works and with 81km gone and 107km to go we finally have the traditional alignment of a single breakaway group and a peloton, the lead is 3’32.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Svab takes the 2nd sprint as well, ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Waeytens and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Teklit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/14.jpg

Just under 100k to go. The lead is 3’20. Last year it was 3’18. Last year 8 riders in the break, this year 10. While the top riders were probably a little stronger last year, they represented 7 different teams, whereas the designated leader in each team should be much fresher this year, with all of them having team support.

The break start the next climb, the longest of the day (9.8km at 4.4%) with a 3’01 lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/15.jpg

1.7km to the top and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Dunne attacks with only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Portela responding.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Dunne (10) takes first but it is close for 2nd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Portela (8+6=14) holds on for 2nd ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Errazkin (6+4=10), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Brandao (4) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Teklit (2+15=17).

The KOM competition remains wide open. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Mudarra was dropped and is 1’12 back, the peleton at 2’52. A few riders dropped from the peloton.

With 73 km to Mudarra is caught. Moser and Air France leading the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/18.jpg

With 1.2km to the next KOM (a cat 4), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Waeytens attacks and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Gebrezgabihier lets a gap go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Waeytens (5 + 2 =7) takes the points ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Teklit (3+17 =20), as the break splinters behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Errazkin (1+10=11) takes the final point. These 3 are the front of the race now. Pretty much up and down the rest of the way with a Cat4, then a Cat 2 and then a Cat 3 before the descent to the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Brandao, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Svab and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Dunne try to bridge back to the front 3. The remaining riders are have been swallowed by the peloton which is at 2’17.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/21.jpg

With 5km to the next KOM and 47km still to ride pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Errazkin can’t hold the pace up front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Teklit (5+17=22) snatches the Cat 4 ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Waeytens (3+7=10).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/23.jpg

The peloton is running out of workers and now trail this group by 2’40. The next climb is the last Cat 2, 4.1km at 6.7%.

As the peloton start the climb they are 3’01 behind the leaders. Only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Errazkin between them and the leaders. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Vliegen on the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/24.jpg

As they near the top pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Teklit distances pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Waeytens. He will have a solid lead in the the KOM tomorrow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/25.jpg

Over the top the peloton’s deficit balloons to 3’40 but the pressure is enough to split the group. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Claeys, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Vogt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Ulissi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fpc.png Yates all caught behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/26.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Waeytens catches back up but looks spent as the front two start the final climb. The climb is a long gentle Cat 3, 9.5 km at 3.9%. The lead is 3’36 and there are 19km to go. The pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Claeys group still has a 48 second gap to close.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/27.jpg

6km to climb for the peloton, they are all back together and the lead is down to 2’40. But not a lot of teams seem willing to help Aegon and Moser.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/28.jpg

2.0km to climb and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Teklit attacks, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Waeytens able to hold his wheel for now. Their lead is 1’49.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/29.jpg

With just over 1km to the top pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Waeytens has to relent. The lead over the peloton is still almost 2 minutes, and it is all downhill to the finish after the KOM point, so this might be the race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/30.jpg

The peloton isn’t getting closer as Aegon, Moser and Air France don’t have any more domestiques and nobody else wants to work. Realizing this pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Hagen attacks.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/31.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Teklit reaches the KOM, securing 6 more points for his lead, he has 28 seconds on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Waeytens and another 1’21 on Hagen (in the distance). Behind that Isostar on the front for the first time trying to close down Hagen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/32.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Waeytens is the much better descender, can he close it down in the last 10.6k and repeat his win from last year?

5km to go the lead is down to 20 seconds, but he needs to close much faster. Behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Hagen is neutralized and the peloton has lost interest.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/33.jpg

1km banner the lead is still 17 seconds, the veteran Eritrean looks like he has it. What a win this will be for Aramco.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/34.jpg

He has time to celebrate.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/35.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Waeytens has to settle for second this year.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/36.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Bevin snatches the last bonus seconds so none of the GC guys will benefit from that. Nobody significant loses time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/37.jpg

With bonus seconds pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Teklit has 2’32 over the GC favorites. Last year pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Waeytens made 2’00 stand up almost to the end, this year he has 2’11.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Teklit gets the KOM and Sprint jersey. Bonus seconds put pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Svab in White and Aramco get the team jersey as well.
