Tour of America - Stage 5
roturn
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_05_PCM0001.jpg

It`s the first proper GC stage. Not yet in the mountains but the late climb on top of Glade Hill is long and in especially steep enough to open gaps. The sprinters will need a strong day to remain in the yellow jersey range, while the pure climbers might struggle. That said, likely a hybrid kind of finish, which sees pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Raileanu as one of the very top favourites. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vvg.png Penasa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Nerz must be watched of course as best stage racers whereas it`s interesting to see how pure climbers or pure puncheurs will do, e.g. Moschella/Abal/Krasnoperov/Duarte/Kuss vs. Anuar Aziz/Costa/Besada.

9 riders in total are ahead of the peloton split in 4 groups. The early KoM goes to a Nordica double as the order is as the following:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Lafay
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Sortveit
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Hoehn
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Vink

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Wilson

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png McConvey
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Costa
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Van Poucke
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Lovik

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_05_PCM0014.jpg

Couple sprinters are forced to help out their teams. Vaquera, Stepniak and Young all in the chasing train.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_05_PCM0017.jpg

Wilson was caught early again and also Cat.4 winner Lafay and Vink are struggling to hold on at the next climb, while the other riders are in E1.

Behind a mix of teams though keep a high pace in the peloton, maybe Costa in the break as one of the top puncheurs doesn`t work out today?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_05_PCM0020.jpg

Back to normal!
McCormick winning the KoM. It`s Hoehn ahead of McConvey, then with a gap Lovik ahead of Sortveit with van Poucke and Costa having a bit of a gap as well.

McNulty, Granigan, Hoehn, Eisenhart make it a 1-2-3-4 now in the KoM standings for one team.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_05_PCM0025.jpg

It was an excellent half stage of how to not cooperate in a break. After every climb it took ages until the group was back together as all split groups went all-in. All 6-9 riders are extremely exhausted due to this and are caught by the peloton with 53km to go!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_05_PCM0031.jpg

This even allows Haller and Bogdanovics to sprint for the bonus seconds and more important sprint points. Yellow jersey Haller takes it and actually might stand a chance to defend the lead if he avoids time differences in the end. So far he didn`t seem to struggle despite a high pace over the first climbs.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_05_PCM0039.jpg

Bol leads the peloton of 86 riders onto the final 2km climb. Behind him lots of big names, Raileanu, Nerz, Penasa in the first rows.
But basically any climber is there, not so many puncheurs to be fair.

Kuss and Kiserlovski a bit behind the first bunch of riders but also in a good position, already around the corner.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_05_PCM0052.jpg

Looking back Haller also still there but he must now be careful to not lose contact as soon as gaps start to open.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_05_PCM0055.jpg

Bostner is preparing the final attack from Raileanu, who sits right behind him with a team mate kind of "forcing" a gap behind.

3 Kraftwerk and Valio riders as well in the first positions and so is lots of Desigual, Glanbia, Azteca.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_05_PCM0059.jpg

When will Raileanu attack. Last kilometer reached with Bostner still leading out.

Right behind him it`s not the big leaders though. Nerz and Penasa are still a bit further behind their team mates.

Well positioned now the Desigual riders Jones/Fraile and Gebremedhin in the middle.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_05_PCM0066.jpg

800m and Raileanu accelerates. Behind Bol tries to keep contact to close the gap for Nerz.
Denz on the other side with one of Penasa`s helpers in Lehtinen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_05_PCM0073.jpg

With 400m to go Denz is the only rider able to keep contact with Raileanu but Penasa has now passed his team mate going into the final kick.

Gebremedhin with Nerz behind him in the middle.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_05_PCM0077.jpg

Penasa going into the lead now with Raileanu struggling and under pressure from others as well.
Basically just those 3 teams in the first rows now with Valio, Kraftwerk and Fablok.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_05_PCM0080.jpg

150m and Penasa might actually take the stage as Raileanu is struggling. And Gebremedhin might make a 1-2 vor Valio.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_05_PCM0082.jpg

Penasa indeed takes it. His final push was the strongest.
Gebremedhin perfectly completes the 1-2 with Raileanu down to 3rd.

Denz ahead of his leader Nerz and Bostner behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_05_PCM0083.jpg

No time gaps for those top6, which means the two top favourites only seperate the time bonuses.

But then there is a small gap behind where Lehtinen smartly didn`t sprint to the line but let it open.
Burke still passing him for 7th with also Mannion, Duarte, Jones, Liphongyu or Garby in that group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_05_PCM0086.jpg

All lose 24s though with couple more such as Abal, Fraile, Atapuma, Kuss.

Behind some more gaps were given, pure climbers Stetina, Maillet or Kiserlovski all at 1'29 alongside Marco Haller, who has fought well but will lose his jersey today.

Even 2'18 for the likes of Krasnoperov, Moschella etc. despite their good position at the start but then basically going backwards.
