Tour de l'Avenir - Stage 5
Nemolito
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/05av01.jpg

Stage five marks the halfway point of this year’s Avenir, and the sprinters will get their third and last chance to shine. In the previous flat stages, the sprinter teams were too weak to reel the breakaway back in, will today be any different?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/05av02.jpg

The first attack seems to be the right one, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/wcy.png Verschaeve brings pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/dnc.png Cote, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Novakowskyi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Chokri with him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Trans cycling team not in the break for the first time this week, they are chasing in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/05av03.jpg

For almost 50 km (!) Trans is firing attacks left and right, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Mestric does the incredible job of keeping them at bay for a very long time. Finally, with 160 km to go, former stage winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Primozic is able to escape. Is he able to catch the leading four, who are 1’30” ahead of him?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/05av04.jpg

The leaders seem to wait for him, as he catches them in no time. 150 km to go as the five leaders are 3’ ahead of the peloton. The teams working here are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rsd.png Ritter Sport Development, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Tinkoff, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Zalgiris and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Swisslion.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/05av05.jpg

The leaders are over halfway the stage as they have 100 km to the finish line. Their lead is now 3’30”, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tfc.png Tryg also working in the peloton. The best placed rider in the leading group is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Chokri, 72nd at 1’52” of yellow jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Eenkhoorn, all the others are six minutes and more behind in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/05av06.jpg

The Bralirwa rider takes six seconds at the only intermediate sprint of the day with 69 km to go. He should jump to place 65-67 in the GC. In the peloton, that is 2’30” behind, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Sivakov recently suffered a puncture, but he’s already been brought back by his teammates.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/05av07.jpg

More screen time for Bralirwa, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png El Sabbahi suffers a puncture as well. He doesn’t get surrounded by teammates to bring him back, it looks like the number 37 in the GC will lose places today. Peloton at 1’55” of the five leaders with 50 km to the finish line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/05av08.jpg

The leading group has already started attacking each other! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Chokri and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/dnc.png Cote got a small gap with 32.5 km to go, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Primozic closed it all by himself, giving pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/wcy.png Verschaeve and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Novakowskyi a free ride. Peloton 1’30” behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/05av09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Novakowskyi is the next to attack under the banner of the final 20 km, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Primozic reacts immediately! The sprinter teams have reduced the gap to 55”, while some domestiques are being dropped in the peloton, including six rider of Trans who gave a lot in the opening hour of this stage!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/05av10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rsd.png Ritter Sport Development, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Swisslion and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tfc.png Tryg are chewing some time off again, as the difference is 45” with 15 km to go! Just as the five leaders come back together ahead of them, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Chokri attacks!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/05av11.jpg

The Bralirwa rider is giving everything he has, but the four chasers are only 5” behind under the banner of the last 10 km! The peloton an additional 25” behind, will they actually make the catch this time?!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/05av12.jpg

Yes! 6.5 km to go as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tfc.png Honore makes the catch! Let’s see what sprinters are positioned well…

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/05av13.jpg

5 km to go! Within the first 20 riders, we can see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Rajovic and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Banaszek, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Philipsen a bit further!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/05av14.jpg

As we look over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Philipsen’s (17) shoulders with 3 km to go, some trains are being formed! The Swisslion train exists out of Christodoulos – Siric – Rajovic, the Ritter Sport train out of Konychev – Awuku – Kanter! Behind those trains we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Banaszek, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tfc.png Dainese, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Hamza, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sui.png Szarka, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Welten, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/dnc.png Nur Hasan and next to Philipsen we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tfc.png Zariff.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/05av15.jpg

2 km to go and the trains choose another side of the road! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/wcy.png Kiskonen also joins the Ritter Sport train now, we porbably won’t see anyone else joining the sprint chaos as there is starting to form a small gap over the peloton. Very important to notice is that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Bernal is also in this first sprinting group!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/05av16.jpg

1.5 km left as the penultimate pawns in the lead-outs are up! No gap anymore, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Peak, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Groves and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Larsen have joined the sprint trains!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/05av17.jpg

Final km, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rsd.png Awuku seems to be the best lead-out! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tfc.png Dainese coming forth quickly, but his leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tfc.png Zariff has lost his wheel!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/05av18.jpg

600 meters to go as it is free for all! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tfc.png Dainese in first, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Hamza in second and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Welten in third!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/05av19.jpg

400 meters to go as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Hamza and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Welten try to take over the lead, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rsd.png Kanter storms forward between pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Hamza and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tfc.png Dainese! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Rajovic also still in a good position to possibly win the stage!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/05av20.jpg

200 meters to the finish line! All mentioned riders next to each other, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sui.png Szarka, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/dnc.png Nur Hasan are trying to find room on the left on the road! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Groves doing the same, but through the middle!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/05av21.jpg

100 meters to go as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tfc.png Dainese falls back and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rsd.png Kanter leads with a few lengths over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Hamza, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Welten and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Rajovic!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/05av22.jpg

50 meters… still pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rsd.png Kanter’s to lose!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/05av23.jpg

Only 25 meters to go, the German close to a well-deserved victory after a good lead-out!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/05av24.jpg

And he wins! Victory for Ritter Sport Development! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Rajovic sprints to second ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Hamza (3rd) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Welten (4th), while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sui.png Szarka (5th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/dnc.png Nur Hasan (6th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Groves (7th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tfc.png Dainese (8th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/wcy.png Kiskonen (9th) and a disappointing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tfc.png Zariff (10th) also finish in the top-10. See you tomorrow, for some puncheur action!
