Tour de l'Avenir - Stage 4

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/04av01.jpg

Can’t really say it’s a surprise that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Van Niekerk is the favourite for the stage win today, and maybe also for overtaking yellow. Quite a calm opening to be honest, with some smaller hills near the end. Let’s find out if the favourite delivers.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/04av02.jpg

It doesn’t take long until a breakaway of six is formed, with some teams being here for the third day in a row. The riders up front are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Sotberg, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Carr, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/dnc.png Marchiori, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Osorio, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Van Moer and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Verwilst. The Belgian from Lierse the only rider not at more than two minutes from the yellow jersey, he’s actually 35th at 21 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/04av03.jpg

100 km to go as the riders are slowly entering the more undulating part of today’s route. The maximum time difference between the leaders and the peloton was 5’, but it’s already been reduced to 3’. The teams working in the peloton are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Carlsberg, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sui.png Team Swiss, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Tinkoff, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Polar and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Philips.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/04av04.jpg

Only the two Belgians are interested in the bonus seconds at the first and only intermediate sprint, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Verwilst wins it ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Van Moer. The peloton at 3’15” with 75 km to go. We are nearing the first KoM now, quick reminder that there are four KoM’s today – 4th, 3rd, 4th and 3rd category.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/04av05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Van Moer starts the first KoM-sprint in first position and manages to fend off pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Carr and the others. The Gjensidige youngster now sharing the KoM-lead with yesterday’s stage winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Primozic. 65 km to go as the peloton crosses the top 3’15” later.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/04av06.jpg

The time difference is growing again. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sui.png Team Swiss doesn’t like it and starts chasing with three riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/04av07.jpg

Another Trans rider in the virtual pink mountain jersey now, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Sotberg wins the sprint on the Côte de la Violette (third category) ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Osorio and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Carr.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/04av08.jpg

The peloton following at two minutes with 32 km to go. Interesting to see is that yellow jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Eenkhoorn has been shadowing top favourite pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Van Niekerk for quite some time now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/04av09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sui.png Team Swiss really looking to do some damage! 26 km to go as they are 1’30” behind the race lead, and the peloton is shattered into pieces! The most important riders that are not in the first group of 92 riders are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Hayter, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png McNulty, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/wcy.png Erdenebat (5th GC), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rsd.png Johanson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tfc.png Zariff.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/04av10.jpg

17 km to the finish line as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Verwilst wins the penultimate KoM-sprint against pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Carr, with the Bralirwa rider taking the KoM-lead now!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/04av11.jpg

Those two could be gone! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Verwilst and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Carr now 20” ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Sotberg and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Van Moer with 15 km to the finish line, while the peloton is at 1’05” of the race lead!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/04av12.jpg

Strong effort by the Gjensidige rider, who makes sure there are four leaders again with 12.5 km to go. The local cows are enjoying this spectacle, while the peloton is 45” behind the race lead now!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/04av13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Sotberg and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Van Moer can’t hold on for long though! Back to two leaders with 11 km to go, as we’re nearing the penultimate hill of the day!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/04av14.jpg

A large peloton enters the last 10 km 30” after the two leaders. Yellow jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Eenkhoorn should move up some places, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Van Niekerk is already in second position!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/04av15.jpg

7.5 km to the finish line as the leaders are on the Côte du Mont Lambert, 1.8 km at 6.6%. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Sotberg is 20” behind, the peloton an additional 15”! The top is at 6 km to the finish line!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/04av16.jpg

As pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Verwilst and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Carr enter the final km of the climb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Sotberg is caught by the peloton, where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Storer decides to attack!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/04av17.jpg

The Philips rider reaches the two leaders with 500 meters to climb, and he has brought someone with him! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Van Niekerk looking to leave all of them behind immediately! Alarm bells going off in the peloton, but is anyone of the shadow favourites strong enough to reel him back in?!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/04av18.jpg

What’s up with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Van Niekerk?! The South African suddenly has trouble going forward, and with the two breakaway guys gets caught by the peloton just before the top! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Storer with another attack just before that, the Philips riders has a gap over the rest of the peloton! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Carr currently leading the KoM, but there are still five points at the finish line, so he has to hope that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Storer breaks down!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/04av19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Storer now entering the final five km! He has a twenty second lead over a peloton of 123 riders, where no one is taking control so far!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/04av20.jpg

And that gap has grown to half a minute with 3 km to the finish line! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Carr himself now working hard to keep the peloton as close as possible, hoping that someone will overtake him and the Bralirwa rider can take the pink KoM-jersey home!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/04av21.jpg

2 km to go for the Philips rider, with the final km going uphill. The gap still thirty seconds!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/04av22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Storer under the flamme rouge now, still thirty seconds ahead of the peloton, where the situation is quite chaotic, everyone trying to get a good position!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/04av23.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Storer at 600 meters of the finish line, 27 seconds ahead of the peloton, where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Nikiema is now doing the lead-out!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/04av24.jpg

The final 500 meters see gradients of up to 10%, and it’s killing the Australian! Everyone in the peloton going at the same pace it seems, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Van Niekerk clearly the strongest, coming closer quickly!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/04av25.jpg

Final 200 meters! Is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Storer able to hold on to the lead?!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/04av26.jpg

Could be, as it looks like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Van Niekerk is slowing down as well!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/04av27.jpg

And he wins! Second win for Philips in four days, and what a great one this was! The Australian also takes the KoM-lead!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Avenir/pics/04av28.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Van Niekerk takes some seconds by finishing second, but he will probably be disappointed! A lot of Xero riders in the top-10, with those places going to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Stannard (3rd), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Higuita (4th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Kiriakidis (5th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Eenkhoorn (6th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Tesson (7th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Sivakov (8th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sui.png Hirschi (9th) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Mano (10th). The first 57 riders finish in the same time, without any really big names missing out.
