Tour of America - Stage 3
roturn
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_03_PCM0099.jpg

Stage 3 is having the next sprinter opportunity, though a bit more difficult towards the end with a Cat.4 followed by a Cat.3 in the final part of the race. The slopes there are quite high and some sprinters might suffer on those.

5 riders in the break including 2 from McCormick as also yesterdays attacker

Basically not a lot did happen on the flat part, so we move onto the first climb. The peloton led by Glanbia,
Valio, Kraftwerk and Nordica`s Lafay (no Ulanowski today!) did reduce the gap down to 1'30 when Bol and Denz mainly highered the pace even more on the 9 % slopes!

And also the breakaway had to up the pace to avoid being caught already.
Mainly the two home riders Granigan and McNulty proved strongest and gapped all others for a 1-2 in the KoM competition, where team mate Eisenhart actually is the leader at the moment, clearly their goal for this race, to get as many KoM days as possible. Only Rivera about to stay in contact passing the Cat.4 in 3rd position.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_03_PCM0122.jpg

The 2nd hill also is up to 9 % and all but those three are caught with the gap down to 30s though.
You also see in the background that the peloton did split into two halfs on the hills. Just 49 riders in group 1. Basically all main GC riders and sprinters in there though.

Some mentionable riders to miss out and being in the 2nd peloton:
Martinelli, Cimolai, King, Cohen, Berger, Schorn, Kvist, Park....lots and lots of leadout riders!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_03_PCM0127.jpg

Granigan and McNulty actually made it over the top first with Bol next as Rivera was caught.
The duo still in front by 25s with another split in the peloton and only 37 riders in there now with some sprinters having lost contact including Ranneries.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_03_PCM0134.jpg

But this time also a few GC riders weren`t attentive including GC leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Fraile! Will he lose his jersey today or can he come back?
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vvg.png Gebremedhin another decent GC rider, though his job might be more to help Penasa to the win here and same goes for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Kiserlovski at the end of group 2.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_03_PCM0138.jpg

So far Granigan got all the points himself moving into the KoM lead ahead of his two team mates in a 1-2-3 there. And with 10 km to go he still has the energy to go solo.
Young future great McNulty can`t follow and will soon be passed by the peloton, which actually is about to refusion with 97 riders in total.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_03_PCM0144.jpg

Also Granigan though wasn`t able to remain in front and was caught just moments later.
With 3km to go the sprint preperations are coming to an end but many riders suffer and it`s not the very best situation.

In especially the Kraftwerk train without Park looks weird with a mix of climbers trying to bring Haller into position. Nordica with actually both their sprinters in decent positions while mainly Ranneries is missing and not back at the front after his earlier split.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_03_PCM0155.jpg

No big surprise the Glanbia train is superior today. King is in the lead with 1.9km to go and moves forward with only Bennett and Vaquera right behind him.
Ulanowski, Young, Von Hoff and Martinelli just like Stepniak, Haller, Bogdanovics try to close the gap, while Kiserlovski on the left still hasn`t realized that Haller isn`t behind him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_03_PCM0162.jpg

Ulanowski and Young actually made it behind the Glanbia train and those 5 riders now have a gap to the others.

Von Hoff, Stepniak, Haller, Bogdanovics and Martinelli already in the wind basically in the need of a very long sprint!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_03_PCM0167.jpg

King did a great job of a long leadout and Bennett was able to wait until 800m to go. Vaquera though still right behind him, not letting go for a tiny second.

Ulanowski and Young with a bit of a gap actually.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_03_PCM0170.jpg

300m to go and Vaquera attacks for the win. Ulanowski and Young still a bit behind but coming closer with the others having quite a gap to bridge.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_03_PCM0172.jpg

Too much of a gap obviously and neither one of the others was able to come back.
Vaquera celebrates a big win, Azteca with the stage win.
Bennett hold on for 2nd ahead of Young and Ulanowski.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_03_PCM0174.jpg

Stepniak best of the rest ahead of Bogdanovics and Haller, who today has experienced the struggle of a mixed GC/sprint focussed team.
Martinelli 8th ahead of King and Von Hoff.
