Yesterday was very windy and we could see Beullens take a surprising win home from the breakaway. Today we’re back in Belgium for the longest stage of this Tour, as we go from Visé to Tournai over 206 km. Will the sprinters actually be able to sprint this time?
It takes a while, but after 25 km of constant attacks, the break of the day is formed. The three teams in the top-3 of yesterday’s stage are back at it. The riders in the break are Primozic, Chokri, Hayter, Phodingam, Gamper and Wirtgen.
Just like yesterday, we see Tryg Forsikring Cykling U23, DK - SVA Zalgiris, Swisslion Cycling Team and Carlsberg – Danske Bank working in the peloton. Some other teams are also helping today though: Ritter Sport Development, Polar, Team Swiss and Tinkoff-EA p/b Aegon.
120 km to go as the six leaders are at the foot of the Namur Citadel, first KoM of the Tour and only one of the day. 2.4 km at 4.2%, who will manage to grab a hold on the first KoM-jersey?
Chokri attacks with 1 km to the top, Wirtgen the first rider behind him!
Hayter now accelerating through the middle, 300 meters left to climb!
A perfectly timed sprint photo shows us how Primozic just manages to beat Hayter and Wirtgen, the first KoM-jersey will go to Slovenia! The peloton crosses the top 3’50” later.
98 km to the finish line as the riders find the first and only intermediate sprint of the day. Easy win for Hayter, with Gamper and Chokri scoring the other points and seconds.
50 km to go and the gap between the leaders and the peloton now at 2’. Just like yesterday, Tryg Forsikring Cykling U23 and Swisslion Cycling Team are very present at the head of the peloton. There’s not as much wind as yesterday, but a group of 25 riders has been distanced. No big names, either sprinter- or GC-wise.
Is it possible to have a breakaway rider be victorious again? Under the banner of the last 20 km the time difference is 1’15”! The first twenty riders in the peloton have actually distanced the rest for a second, but they are all back together now (except for the 25 who are 2’30” behind). The wind has actually started blowing a bit heavier again, time for some managers to have another heart attack?
15 km to the finish line, the gap between the peloton and the leaders now 40”.
The gap is growing again! 10 km to go as the time difference has gone up to 1’10”! Norsgaard and Honore have tried to close the gap, but two against six is not a fair battle! Nobody else is helping Tryg for the moment!
The lead has only been cut by five seconds when we reach the final seven km! Gamper is not the best sprinter, but he’s a very promising rouleur, he plays to his strengths and attacks with 6.7 km to the finish line!
Five km remaining and the five chasers are 15” behind the Lierse rider! The peloton at an additional 55”!
Gamper now entering the city of Tournai with 3 km to go! The five chasers now at 20”, the peloton an additional 50” behind!
Gamper 2 km away from glory now! The five chasers still at twenty seconds, while the peloton has come ten seconds closer, but that’s still one minute behind the race lead!
The Austrian now under the flamme rouge, as behind him the sprint for second place has started! Or is it still possible for this group to win it? First rider behind them is Siric leading out the peloton, 20” behind!
Gamper is falling still with 700 meters to go! Hayter now coming quickly, but Primozic positioned perfectly in the Brit’s wheel! Zariff the first “real" sprinter a bit further!
Hayter in the lead with 400 meters to go, but it looks like Chokri is making the most speed! Rajovic leading the sprint in the peloton just around the corner, but that seems to be too far away to still win the stage!
Chokri stands still with 200 meters to go, and it looks like it is Hayter vs. Primozic for the win!
The Slovenian flies past the Minion in the last meters, déjà vû for Hayter, as this happened at the Citadel of Namur as well!
And the Trans rider even has time to celebrate! Primozic wins stage three ahead of Hayter and Wirtgen! Chokri comes in fourth ahead of Gamper (5th) and Phodingam (6th).
Kanter (7th) wins the battle of the sprinters ahead of Zariff (8th), Rajovic (9th) and Ovsyannikov (10th). Except for the 25 coming in some minutes later, everyone finishes in the same time, and the yellow jersey doesn’t change shoulders.
