195 of pretty flat kilometers. The only difficulty already soon after the start as the Cat.4 will decide the first KoM leader.
Other than that a clear opportunity for the sprinters around former ToA stage winner Haller and biggest rival Ulanowski.
Though couple more sprinters as seen in the list can`t be underestimated as the differences are really small here.
As said in the preview the sprint preperation might be key as well and here in especially the weaker sprinters have the stronger trains as both Kraftwerk and Nordica focus on the GC a lot as well and this could help the likes of Glanbia, Europcar, Eddie Stobart or maybe Fablok.
Being the first attacker of the race also leads to the winner of the KoM as after attacking, no one was fresh enough for another sprint to the line.
Eisenhart takes the maximum points for McCormick.
Rivera, Kangangi, Scott complete the breakaway and pass the line in that order.
It might be for 5th only but small points on the board for one more rider behind the break.
Haller ahead of Ranneries and Vasquera while most other sprinters gave it a try as well with Young, Von Hoff, Stepniak, Bogdanovics and Bennett.
Only Ulanowski stayed in the peloton of the very best.
And surprisingly a few kilometers later their tactic becomes weird. Ulanowski himself chasing! On a flat stage! Without having the GC lead or even top3 GC riders!
Main option might be that the team goes for Martinelli instead as more complete sprinter, who might as well have a chance to survive the full 21 days and fight for the point jersey? Plus a team of just 6 starters, which means, missing 2 proper support riders.
The other two sprints with the same sprinters trying. Stepniak and Bennett were fastest there.
With 8km left Kangangi proves to the be strongest not only on paper but also today. He goes solo but the peloton is just 40s behind and it will be hard to stay ahead.
Kraftwerk, Glanbia and Europcar form the trains. This kind of makes sense strength wise even though Kraftwerk must take care not too spend too much energy before the GC stages and might suffer a bit as their first rider Denz was already one of their two main guys to set the pace all day.
Kvist Denz Frame Schorn Park King Ranneries Vaquera Haller Bennett Von Hoff Stepniak Bogdanovics Cohen Young- Ulanowski- - - - - - Martinelli
Nordica struggles as the riders leading their riders through the peloton are missing. Ulanowski actually better placed but more exhausted while not sure if Martinelli is coming ahead in time.
Meanwhile Europcar seems to be strongest, which makes sense as Kvist is the strongest 1st man and both Denz and Frame did work a lot before.
The 2nd man though could go towards Glanbia as Ben King is good on high pace but not that much stronger than Schorn neither with Park being more a pure sprinter than a leadout.
Glanbia moved towards the Kraftwerk train a bit, which also sees Vaquera and Von Hoff find the fast train of Europcar.
And it also means the end of Kangangi`s attempt. Caught with 3km to go.
800m and both King and Park did their job basically and are on par with the Europcar train, where Schorn still is in the lead though.
All three Haller, Bennett and Ranneries though are now leaving their leadouts.
Stepniak behind Haller with Vaquera, Von Hoff, Young and Bogdaovics behind Ranneries.
No other sprinter around! No Ulanowski and no Martinelli!
300m to go and Stepniak on the right suffers it seems. Same for the leadouts as usual.
In front Bennett closely ahead of Ranneries but basically all but Bogdanovics are on one line.
Close finish but Haller seems to have it. In especially as both Bennett and Ranneries suffered towards the end.
And so it`s another ToA stage win for Marco Haller. Congrats to Kraftwerk. Today it was enough without using their main climbers and it also moves him into 2nd GC just +6s behind Fraile!
Vaquera in 2nd ahead of Von Hoff and Young.
Bennett down to 5th with Bogdanovics in 6th ahead of Ranneries and Stepniak.
Ulanowski actually up to 13th in the end and shows he is the better option than Martinelli, who was 35th. Not their start though.
