DEM files names
tomcat9
Hi!

I downloaded tons of DEM packs with descriptions and even with map pics sometimes but I have no idea how DEM files names (f.e. N5E-75) corresponding to specific region. Maybe someone knows the algorithm of DEM files naming or even has a list of DEM files names with regional indicating? Thanks!

Let's save the history of PCM together!

Just write me a PM if you have something for old PCM Editions (from 2005 to 2014) - databases, stages, shirts etc. and we'll share it.

DEM file names, such as N5E-75, typically follow a naming convention that indicates the coordinates of the region they represent. Here's how the naming generally works:
1. Latitude:
- The N5 in your example stands for a latitude of 5° North.
- Similarly, S indicates south latitude (e.g., S20 means 20° South).

2. Longitude:
- The E-75 represents 75° East longitude.
- Similarly, W indicates west longitude (e.g., W-100 means 100° West).

3. Region Covered:
- DEM files usually cover a square tile, often 1° x 1°, 5° x 5°, or 10° x 10°, depending on the dataset.

Finding Specific Regions
To identify which region a DEM file covers:
- Match the latitude and longitude coordinates (e.g., N5E-75) with a map grid. This can often be done using online tools or GIS software.
- Use the [EarthExplorer tool by USGS](https://earthexplorer.usgs.gov/) or a similar mapping platform to visualize DEM tiles on a global map.

Lists or Tools for Reference
Some DEM datasets (like SRTM or ASTER) have metadata and tile maps available online. Look for resources or overlays like:
- SRTM Tile Reference Maps: These provide visual grids with corresponding tile names.
- Global Mapper: Software that can load DEMs and display their geographical bounds.
- GDAL Tools: Command-line tools for processing and inspecting DEM files.
If you're dealing with a specific DEM dataset, let me know—I might be able to guide you to the exact resource!
