Tour of America - Stage 1
roturn
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_01_PCM0001.jpg

The first stage is a 6,4km ITT, maybe a tiny bit too long for the pure prologue specialists but too short for the big TT engines.

Being most complete pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Fraile must be the top favourite for an early GC lead, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Cruz and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Ford are the time trialists and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Jiang as prologue specialist the riders challenging him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_01_PCM0002.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Liphongyu is a 2nd or even 3rd tier GC rider here but might be Sauber`s main rider actually.
As first better time trialist, he sets the new best time. 28s faster than Venturini or McConvey at the moment.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_01_PCM0004.jpg

As Haller is given the team no.1, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Nerz with an early start. He can`t beat the previous best but goes into 2nd just 9s short.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_01_PCM0006.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Ulanowski as prologue specialist and actually the best chance from the sprinters to grab the GC lead early with a good ride here or some bonus seconds later.
Same time as Nerz going into 3rd. Still in bonus second range for now and also showing that while ITT skills might be needed a pure prologue specialist is still coming close.

A bit later some more riders:
- Dahlberg +23
- Railleanu +42
- Frame +6 into 2nd!
- Costa +12
- Plucinski +8
- Kiserlovski +30

Some surprisingly strong rides showing that daily form is another factor.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_01_PCM0014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Ford is the first top time trialist and despite having no big strength anywhere else, he has a great palmares already, mainly from his Oz Cycling days. And by almost passing Herrera in front of him, his time must be good.
And indeed he takes the lead, 9s faster than Liphongyu setting a new benchmark to some other riders:
- Duarte +30
- Geniez +11 !

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_01_PCM0019.jpg

Can pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Fraile beat this time? Apparently yes! Yet again the 9s mark, which later will be upped to 10s even. Strong new best by the Spaniard and not too many riders left, that are able to beat this one.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_01_PCM0021.jpg

And it won`t be home rider pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Cruz neither. The crowd favourite for today is doing fine but needs 12s more on the course, which is another 2s to Ford and provisional 3rd.

Some more riders in:
- Koren +28 as 10th
- Krasnoperov +50
- Atapuma +1'16

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_01_PCM0025.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Abal must have gotten some advices from his team mate as his time is huge. Same time as Cruz but sitting behind him in 4th! Still this is a strong performance by Desigual and the question remains open, who will be their main leader.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_01_PCM0028.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Jiang as last stage favourite but his TT skills weren`t good enough and the course 2-3 km too long. He comes in as 5th ahead of team mate Liphongyu but 16 s behind Fraile!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/ToA/mg20_toa_01_PCM0033.jpg

Last coverage goes to the 2nd big GC favourite pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vvg.png Penasa. Not as strong against the clock as Nerz and his time shows this as well, but he won`t lose too much.
42s which means 14s on Nerz and ahead of most other GC riders! The longer TT will be more of a task for him to reduce the time gap.

In the end no other rider coming close and Fraile takes the win ahead of the Glanbia duo.
Stepniak surprisingly as best sprinter but at 23s also out of the bonus seconds in tomorrows finish. Haller +26 and Ulanowski +28 the other two strong sprinters with chances on the next stages.
